How to plant eggplant seedlings in open ground or a greenhouse?
Eggplant is one of our favorite vegetables. It belongs to the nightshade family, like the tomato, bell pepper, and potato. But he has many difficulties in growing and caring, he is very capricious in keeping.
Peculiarities
Of all the nightshades growing in our plots and gardens, eggplant is the most thermophilic. This is a culture with a long vegetative period of development. Depending on the variety, the duration of its vegetation ranges from 80 to 140 days. Therefore, in most regions of our country, the cultivation of "blue ones" is possible only through seedlings.
For the cultivation of this vegetable in seedlings, certain conditions must be met.
Preparing the ground
The soil can be purchased ready-made, special for eggplant, with neutral acidity. But you can also cook it at home: take one part of lowland peat, two parts of humus, half of the caked sawdust. It must be remembered that eggplant seedlings do not tolerate high acidity, therefore, fresh sawdust and organic matter cannot be used for these purposes. If the earth turned out to be insufficiently loose and airy, add coarse river sand. The resulting composition is better to disinfect. This can be done in several ways:
- take out the prepared soil for several days in the cold;
- calcine in the oven;
- steam over boiling water;
- shed with a hot solution of potassium permanganate of a saturated color.
Soil disinfection is necessary to prevent the spread of bacterial and viral infections. And we also get rid of the larvae of various pests.
After preparing the soil, you need to prepare the seeds. To disinfect future seedlings from diseases and parasites, you need to soak the seeds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour, after putting them in a bag of gauze or bandage. After that, rinse the seeds and place them in a growth stimulator solution for several hours.
To further increase the germination time, the seeds are germinated. To do this, spread a damp cloth in a plate, spread disinfected seeds on it, cover it again with a cloth on top and put the saucer in a warm dark place for a couple of days. Once the seeds hatch, they can be planted.
It is convenient to grow eggplants in special containers for seedlings or in disposable cups. Already moistened soil is poured there, it should be airy, not compressed. In this case, the weak roots of the plant will not be difficult to germinate. Seeds are laid out on top, one in each cup and pressed a little with a toothpick. Then moisten the earth mixture from the spray gun. The soil should be moist, but not wet.
Cassettes or cups are covered with a film or glass on top, placed on a pallet, which is placed in a warm, dark place. The ideal location for seed germination is next to the battery.
Separately, it should be noted that eggplants, being a southern plant, sprout only at a certain air temperature. In the first few days, a temperature of + 25 ... 28 degrees is required for seed germination.Daily temperature fluctuations from + 15 ... 16 degrees at night to + 25 ... 27 during the day are welcome. This hardens young plants and stimulates the formation of flower buds. If the room is below plus 13, the seedlings will not develop.
Due to the fact that in the conditions of the middle lane these plants are planted with seeds in early or mid-February, and the daylight hours are still short, the seedlings must be highlighted. This can be done with incandescent lamps or LED lamps. But still it is better to use specialized phytolamps. They have the necessary spectrum for plants.
To avoid the appearance of a black leg, it is better to water young plantings in a pan, this method also stimulates root formation. Excess water must be removed so that the roots do not rot. Water the seedlings with warm settled water.
Before planting in the ground or greenhouse, young plants need to be hardened off. A couple of weeks before planting, seedlings are taken out for 2-3 hours to a cooler room, for example, to a balcony. Every day, the period of stay in the cool is increased, and then completely left there.
By the day of planting, suitable seedlings look strong and healthy. These are plants 15-20 cm high with 5-7 leaves and several buds.
How to properly plant in the ground?
Eggplant seedlings are planted at the age of 60-70 days. At this point, the seedlings are best transplanted. Of course, it is necessary that during the landing there is no cold weather and return frosts.
For planting eggplant in a greenhouse or open ground, it is advisable to prepare a place in advance. This must be done in accordance with the rules of crop rotation. You should not plant "blue ones" if other nightshade crops were predecessors in this area.Their representatives have the same pests, diseases and similar requirements for the composition of the soil, so eggplants will not have enough of the necessary minerals. Their best predecessors in the garden are pumpkin crops: cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, watermelons, melons. The “blue ones” grow just as well after legumes: beans, peas and beans. And even after cabbage and onions.
To plant eggplant, you need to prepare the soil. To do this, humus and a tablespoon of wood ash are introduced into each landing hole. Pour 2-3 liters of water into each well. The earth in a glass with seedlings is abundantly moistened so that it is as easy as possible to extract a young plant. Then the seedling rolls over into the hole, the soil is poured and lightly compacted. On top of the planting, you can mulch with rotted manure.
A place for a bed with eggplants must be allocated in a sunny, draft-protected area. It is advisable to prepare this part of the garden since the fall: first dig it up, get rid of weeds and apply the necessary fertilizers (superphosphate and urea). In the spring, you only have to remove the remaining weeds, fill the ground with rotted humus and ash.
Seedlings are planted depending on the height of the variety according to such a plan: 40 cm between plants and 50 cm between rows if the variety is low, and 50 by 60 cm if it is high.
Since eggplants are afraid of the cold, in open ground conditions they are first planted under a film on metal arcs. Then, as it gets warmer, it is left only for the night.
But if even in summer the temperature drops sharply, it is recommended to cover the plants with a film.
Planting in a greenhouse
In the conditions of the North and the middle zone, it is advisable to grow eggplants in a greenhouse. The favorite temperature of eggplants is plus 25-28 degrees.But in a polycarbonate greenhouse in the heat, the temperature reaches 35-45 degrees, which can be detrimental to these plants.
When planting eggplants in a greenhouse, we prepare the soil in the same way as for planting in an open space. All other agricultural techniques are similar.
"Blue ones" are very fond of systematic watering. The water temperature is best around +25 degrees. You need to water the eggplants in the greenhouse in the morning, then mulch the soil and ventilate the greenhouse. In order to avoid the appearance of fungal diseases, it is necessary to ventilate the greenhouse regularly, while avoiding drafts, that is, the doors and transoms of the greenhouse are opened from one side.
In the greenhouse, the "blue ones" grow much higher than their counterparts from the open ground. Therefore, they are advised to tie them to pegs.
Care
Caring for eggplants is simple and consists of systematic watering and timely top dressing, as well as removing weeds, loosening the earth and controlling parasites.
Eggplants are very picky about soil moisture, its lack negatively affects the growth and development of the crop.
During the entire growing season of eggplants, they need to be fed several times.
- For the first time top dressing should be done two weeks after planting, when the plant is well rooted. Feed with a solution of rotted manure or bird droppings with the addition of 1 tbsp. spoons of nitrophoska.
- The second top dressing is carried out at the beginning of fruit formation by the same means, adding wood ash.
- The third feeding is carried out two weeks after the previous one. As with other plants, all dressings are carried out on moist soil.
Diseases and pests
Eggplants are at risk of contracting various diseases. Let's consider some of them.
- Root collar rot (blackleg) formed with excessive watering, high planting density and low temperature. The causative agent of this disease is a fungus that causes damage to the root collar. You can prevent this disease by observing the irrigation regime.
- black spot all parts of the plant are affected. Black spots with a yellow border first appear on the leaves, which gradually increase in size. For protection, the means "Fitolavin" and "Barrier" are used.
- Mosaic leaves, these vegetables are mainly infected when picking and growing seedlings. Seed material and land are often infected with this virus. Therefore, it is very important to carry out disinfection of seeds and soil. With this disease, a mosaic pattern appears on the leaves, and yellow spots appear on the fruits. Such plants should be disposed of. The rest are processed by Fitosporin and Zircon.
- late blight all vegetables of the nightshade family are susceptible. One of the main methods of preventing the disease is to follow the rules of crop rotation: you can not plant eggplant after planting tomatoes, peppers and potatoes in this place. Late blight is a fungal disease that appears, like the black leg, with excessive soil moisture. The disease is manifested by the appearance of brown spots on the upper side of the leaves, and from below - a white coating. Rot develops on fruits. With this ailment, plantings are treated with copper-containing preparations, "Fitosporin" and "Zircon".
- Gray rot thrives in high humidity. This is another one of the fungal diseases. A distinctive feature is the presence of watery spots on the leaves, which are then covered with a gray coating, turn yellow and fall off. It starts from the root region, rises to the leaves and fruits, which also rot. Treatment is with fungicides.
- white rot also due to excessive humidity and low temperatures during the period of planting seedlings in open ground, or when the seedlings are frozen. Brown annular stripes appear on the stems, the shoots gradually dry out, the leaves curl, and the plant sheds them. The affected parts are removed, and the remaining ones are sprinkled with ashes.
- powdery mildew - This is a fungal disease that is more common in greenhouse conditions. A white coating appears on the lower leaves, then rises higher and is transmitted to the whole plant. Eggplants stand as if sprinkled with flour. From powdery mildew, the preparations "Fitosporin", "Gaupsin" and "Trichodermin" are used.
- Verticillosis or wilt - a fungal infection of eggplant, which is notable for yellowing and wilting of the leaves. First, the lower leaves are affected, then the whole plant withers. Sick specimens are destroyed, the rest are treated with bromide.
In addition to various diseases, eggplants are subject to pest invasion.
- Slugs mainly interested in young plantings. To scare them away, a mix of ash, lime and tobacco dust is used. The earth is loosened and the aisles are sprinkled with this mixture.
- whitefly feeds on plant sap, like other parasites. At the same time, it releases certain substances that favor the appearance of fungal diseases. It settles on the inside of the leaves. To get rid of the whitefly, use the drugs "Fitoverm", "Aktellik" and "Aktara".
- Appearance on vegetables spider mite due to dryness and high temperatures. It usually affects plants grown indoors. The best prevention of its occurrence is to increase the humidity in the greenhouse. For the destruction of the tick, the preparations "Fitoverm", "Aktellik", "Fufanon" are used.
- First appearance signal aphids - this is the twisting and falling of the leaves. Aphids live in colonies on the back of the leaf and multiply rapidly. Feeding on the juice of the plant, causes great damage to it. Therefore, it is necessary to get rid of the pest in a short time. Means for combating aphids are Strela, Tanrek, Biotlin, Fitoverm.
- Colorado beetle harms not only potatoes, he seeks to feast on the leaves of the "blue ones". Its larvae are especially dangerous, they destroy young foliage and ovaries of plants. From the Colorado potato beetle there are preparations "Karate", "Prestige", "Sonnet".
