Cooking red lentils in a slow cooker
Red lentils make delicious and hearty dishes. You can cook it not only on the stove, but also in a slow cooker. Recipes for cooking with this kitchen appliance are quite diverse. Let's look at how and how much to cook red lentils with meat and vegetables, as well as other options.
Cooking features
Before turning on the multicooker, pour lentils into the bowl and fill it with water, attention must be paid to thorough cleaning of the grains. Sort the lentils, removing fine debris, and then rinse several times, pouring clean water and draining it. Since the red variety boils well and without soaking, this cooking step, which is necessary when using other varieties of lentils, can be skipped.
Water for cooking is taken in a ratio of 2: 1, that is, two glasses of water are used for one glass of lentils. Salt is recommended to be added to the dish at the end of cooking. The average cooking time for red lentils is 15-20 minutes. If the grains are only one of the components of the dish, then they are added at the stage when exactly that much time is left until the end of cooking.
To cook red lentils in a slow cooker, choose “stew” mode or program according to which cereals are cooked (in different devices it is called differently, for example, "porridge" or "rice"). If the program is over and there is still liquid in the bowl, turn on the heating mode for a while so that all the moisture is completely absorbed.
Recipes
In addition to the usual red lentil porridge, you can also cook many other dishes based on this legume in a slow cooker.
With vegetables
Most often, red lentils are cooked with carrots and onions.
- Vegetables are peeled and chopped, fried in a slow cooker in sunflower oil (using the “frying” or “baking” program).
- After 10 minutes from the start of cooking, washed lentils (200 g) and water (500 ml) are added, the timer is set for 30 minutes and the “stewing” program is selected.
- Salt and spices are added 5 minutes before the end of the program.
- In such a dish, you can add diced zucchini or tomato without skin, chopped white cabbage and other vegetables.
With mushrooms
- After peeling one onion, finely chop it and put it in a multicooker bowl, in which you preheat a little vegetable oil.
- Add one grated carrot to the onion, then fry the mixture until golden brown.
- After washing and cutting 400 g of champignons, add them to the vegetables, select the “stew” mode and cook for about 10 minutes.
- Pour 1.5 cups of washed lentils into the bowl, add salt, pepper and garlic.
- Pour the mass with 2 cups of water, mix, set the mode for cooking porridge and cook until tender.
With meat
- From one onion and one carrot, make a roast, as in the previous recipe.
- After adding 300 g of diced pork, simmer the meat with vegetables for about 10 minutes while stirring.
- Pour washed lentils (2 cups) into the multicooker bowl and pour hot water (4 cups).
- After adding salt and spices, set the “pilaf” mode, and after the end of the program, leave the dish on heating for another 10-20 minutes.
Helpful Hints
For cooking lentils, you can use not only water, but also chicken, vegetable or mushroom bouillon. To make the finished porridge crumbly and tasty, during cooking add 10-20 ml of vegetable oil. So spices in recipes for lentil dishes, you can safely experiment. They often add black and red pepper, suneli hops, Provence herbs, meat mixture, cumin, coriander and other seasonings.
In addition, the taste of lentil puree can be varied with tomato sauce, adjika, garlic, fresh herbs.
Lentils cooked in a slow cooker are recommended to be served with vegetables. With such porridge, both fresh vegetables and canned ones go well. Tomatoes are especially often a "companion" to lentil dishes.
