Fruits of Turkey: names, properties and description

Turkey attracts many of our fellow citizens not only with the warm sea and the all inclusive package, but also with fragrant fruits. Local bazaars and markets are full of their diversity. Extraordinarily sweet tangerines and delicious figs will be remembered for a long time. Plus, it's a great gift for family and friends. Let's figure out what fruits grow on this sunny and hospitable land.

Varieties

Many of the local fruits are well known to our compatriots. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be tried. The undoubted advantage of fruits is freshness, since they do not have to ripen during transportation or lie on supermarket shelves for a long time. All these fruits grow right here, which means they retain the maximum amount of nutrients and have an amazing aroma and taste.

figs

When purchasing it on the market, ask in which region the fruit grew. The most delicious grows in Izmir. The peculiarity of this fruit is that it is not exported to other countries, which means that it will be possible to try it only directly in Turkey. The problem is that it has a very short shelf life. Figs do not withstand long-term transportation and lying on the shelves.

Banana

A very sweet and nutritious fruit. Perfect for a snack during a long excursion. Find out from the locals where the plantations of this fruit are located. It's worth watching for everyone. The tree resembles a huge flower, carefully guarding delicious bunches of bananas.

medlar

The fruits grow on dwarf trees. Their height does not reach even two meters. The fruit has a refreshing sweet and sour taste. This is one of those fruits that you just need to try in Turkey, because you won’t find them in our stores. It will not work to take it home, as the medlar is very tender and will quickly deteriorate.

oranges

If you think that you know this citrus well, then you are most likely mistaken. Be sure to try different varieties of oranges. Each of them is good in its own way. Some will be very sweet, in others you will not find a single bone. In season, the markets are filled with these fragrant orange fruits, and they are quite inexpensive.

Sweet cherry

Although historically Turkey is not the birthplace of this berry, it grows here very successfully. The sweet taste of cherries is also familiar to us, since in season it can be easily found in bazaars and supermarkets. They also grow sour varieties, which are more familiar to us. But only the hot sun makes them very juicy and tasty.

apricots

watermelons

What could be nicer than a fresh and juicy watermelon on a hot day.It is not only delicious, but also a great thirst-quenching fruit. There are quite a few varieties, so before buying, ask the seller about the features of each. For example, a variety called Kara has reddish seeds and a very sweet taste. But Diyarbakir is a real giant, its weight can reach 60 kg.

Apples

Despite the fact that this fruit is very familiar to us, do not deny yourself the pleasure of eating it on vacation. Here you will find bright red apples, as if taken from a fairy tale, and yellow juicy specimens, and green ones with a slight sourness in taste.

Grape

In Turkey, you will find grapes in all sorts of shades and colors. Each variety is unique in its own way. The richer and darker its color, the sweeter the fruit will be. But this does not mean that green varieties are tasteless. On the contrary, they are not so cloying and refresh well on a hot day. The main places of growth are the region of Eastern Anatolia and the Aegean region.

Quince

Another fruit that you are unlikely to be able to taste in Russia. Depending on the region of origin, its taste qualities also change. In Turkey, it is yellow. The fruits are juicy and very tasty. It's hard to believe, but the fruit is a close relative of the common pear.

Nectarines

How many times have you bought nectarines in bazaars and markets near your home, and when you come home, you are disappointed. Fruits are harvested according to the season and have time to fully ripen on the branch, and not on a long journey to the counter.

Mulberry

A berry that grows on a mulberry tree. You should definitely try it in Turkey. After all, in our homeland it can be found only in the southern regions. In addition to excellent taste, it also has beneficial properties for the body. Mulberry is used for problems with the gastrointestinal tract, diabetes, bronchitis and hypertension.

tangerines

Those who do not like oranges for their thick skin will certainly fall in love with small Turkish tangerines. They are very sweet and fragrant. In addition, most children prefer them.

But do not forget about the sense of proportion, an abundance of citrus fruits can cause diathesis and other allergic reactions.

grenades

You can find out that he has ripened by appearance. The peel must be necessarily red or burgundy. Do not buy fruits with a green shell. The best time to buy is September. This month is the season of their collection.

The fruit is very good for the heart, so this is a great opportunity not only to improve the taste, but also take care of your health.

How to choose?

Going to the local bazaar, you need to understand that with all the variety of fruits and the abundance of sellers, there is still a chance to buy a low-quality product. First of all, this is due to the hot climate. All fruits just lie on the shelves, which means they can quickly deteriorate. When choosing, pay special attention to appearance.

Various cracks, dark spots and other unpleasant signs on the fruit should alert. Even if one copy in the box shows signs of decay, it is better to refuse to buy, as dangerous bacteria could also get on neighboring peaches or apricots.

Friendly (sometimes even intrusive) sellers will gladly give you a taste of the selected fruit. But be careful. After all, no one washed it before laying it on the counter. So it is better to focus on the appearance.

As a last resort, ask to break one copy in half. This applies to peaches, apricots, tangerines and other small fruits.

seasonality

You should not count on the fact that at any time you arrive in Turkey, you will find the whole range of fruits there. They also have seasonality. For a complete picture of the maturation of the various species, see the table.

What can be exported?

The customs policy regarding fruits is quite loyal. You can surprise friends and loved ones at home with incredibly sweet figs or exotic medlar, if you manage to keep them on the road. But is it worth it to bring oranges or apricots familiar to us from there? In a nearby supermarket or market, you can find no less fragrant and tasty specimens.

Just correlate seasonality and do not forget to ask where these fruits were brought from.

What fruits cannot be exported?

There are no special restrictions on the export of fruits from Turkey, but it is worth remembering that customs services will not be allowed to carry more than 5 kg. This amount should be enough for original gifts to friends. If you are buying for yourself, then there is no point in buying more anyway. After all, each fruit has its own expiration date, and you will obviously not be taking them in the refrigerator.

Where to buy?

While staying in one of the many hotels in Turkey, you can try local fruits for breakfast or lunch. But before tasting, and even more so before giving them to a child, carefully examine them. Although this country has a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, some hotels prefer to buy cheaper analogues in other countries. In this case, the question arises about their freshness and ripeness.

If you decide to buy fruit, then go to the nearest bazaar. About where it is, you will be told in your own hotel. It is in the market that you will find quality products from local producers. Haggling is common in Turkey, so feel free to knock down the original price. This is quite appropriate here.

A huge plus of all Turkish fruits is their environmental friendliness. The use of pesticides and other additives in local fields and plantations is prohibited by law.
