Pear "Chizhovskaya": full characteristics, planting and care

Pear Chizhovskaya: full characteristics, planting and care

Today it is quite difficult to find an orchard in which there will be no such tree as a pear. Quite a lot of varieties of this delicacy were bred, but the result of domestic selection - the Chizhovskaya pear - deserves special attention.

Description

According to many scientists, the ancient Greeks began to grow pears. And since the popularity of this seasonal fruit has survived to this day, breeders and gardeners today offer a huge selection of its varieties. The Chizhovskaya hybrid rightfully occupies a leading position in the crop market, as it is notable for its excellent fruiting and high palatability in comparison with other varieties. However, all the advantages of culture can be fully revealed only with strict observance of the requirements relating to agricultural technology.

The pear hybrid was bred by crossing the varieties "Olga" and "Forest Beauty" at the Moscow Agricultural Academy. Timiryazev. Chizhovskaya borrowed resistance to diseases, early fruiting and good keeping quality of fruits from its mother plants. In addition, self-fertility and high yield of an adult tree. According to the complete characteristics of the culture, the hybrid is recommended for cultivation in the Central, Middle Volga and North-Western regions.

The height of an adult pear reaches about 2.5 meters.However, the size of the tree may vary depending on climatic conditions and the place where the seedling is planted. In a young plant, the crown is rather narrow with an average density of green mass. But in the phase when the culture begins to bear fruit, its crown changes and takes on the shape of a cone. The bark of the pear has a dark green tint; there are no branches in the lower part of the tree. Skeletal branches are located in a vertically inclined state.

Pear shoots have a slightly curved shape, round in cross section. The foliage on the tree is slightly elongated with a serrated edge. There are veins in the center of each leaf. Pear buds "Chizhovskaya" grow in the form of a brown cone. The tree blooms in spring with white buds, inflorescences include from 5 to 7 flowers.

The fruit, unlike the Lada variety, ripens in the usual pear-shaped form, the weight of one fruit is about 150 grams. The peel of the pear is matte, medium density. Ripe pears have a yellow-green color, some fruits have a pink spot. Inside the pear, seeds ripen in a small amount, usually in one fruit there are from 5 to 10 of them.

The flesh of the fruit is white, sometimes light yellow, the juiciness is at an average level. As for taste, the Chizhovskaya pear is sweet and sour, with an unobtrusive aroma. The fruits contain 16.5% dry matter. 13.1% soluble trace elements. The sugar content is within 9%.

The plant will begin to bear fruit 2-4 years after planting on the site. A distinctive feature of the variety is the reluctance of fruits to overripe. The hybrid tolerates negative temperatures well.

Pear "Chizhovskaya" is immune to scab, due to which it is more popular among other pear trees.

But the tree is moisture-loving, therefore it requires increased care in the summer.

For the most complete description of the variety, it is necessary to dwell on the advantages of the culture:

  • pear is notable for high yields;
  • after harvesting, the fruits do not spoil for a long time, so the variety is transportable;
  • precocity and frost resistance determine the popularity of the hybrid;
  • pears are distinguished by their presentation and good taste;
  • resistance to the most common disease - scab makes the culture in demand.

    In addition to the positive qualities, the hybrid has some disadvantages:

    • in the process of tree aging, pears become smaller;
    • The variety needs abundant watering in order to minimize the drying of the soil.

    However, with competent agricultural technology, the shortcomings of Chizhovskaya can be dealt with quite easily. In the first case, the grinding of fruits occurs due to a deficiency of nutrients, since in the process of growth most of them go to increase the total vegetative mass of the crop. To make the reduction of pears non-critical, you should regularly fertilize the plant.

    As for poor drought tolerance, proper and timely watering will completely eliminate this drawback.

    Landing

    The place for planting a pear seedling is a fundamental factor on which its normal development and future harvest largely depend. For a hybrid, acidity is considered an important soil parameter. It is best that the site is dominated by slightly acidic soil, in order to normalize the pH, the earth must be limed. The soil with an increased level of lime is treated with superphosphate or potassium salt.Peat and sand are introduced into clayey chernozem to provide the earth with the necessary friability, which will contribute to good aeration.

    All preparatory measures regarding the place and soil should be carried out several months before planting the crop.

    Variety "Chizhovsky" is considered a heat-loving tree, so the place for a pear needs good access to sunlight, in addition, the plant should be protected from drafts and cold winds in winter. It is worth giving preference to flat terrain without passing groundwater.

    The best time for rooting a seedling will be spring or autumn. Experienced gardeners quite successfully plant pears in October. However, for the northern regions, it is worth choosing the spring month for planting. It is best to carry out work in the first weeks of May, at which time the soil will already warm up sufficiently to the required depth.

    An important task is the choice of a seedling. Trees no older than three years take root well, as for older crops, when they are dug out, damage to the roots quite often occurs. It is noted that this variety does not tolerate transplanting to a new place quite well, this applies to adult crops.

    Externally, the pear should not have damage to the bark on the trunk, and a healthy root system cannot contain various growths. The crown of the seedling must be ripe.

    A hole for a pear should be dug in advance. The right decision would be to prepare it about a month before the planned planting date. Pit work involves the following activities:

    • the dimensions of the landing pit for the pear must be at least 70 centimeters wide with a depth of about one meter;
    • about 25 kilograms of humus, a bucket of sand, 200 grams of potassium and 1.5 kilograms of superphosphate are placed in the resulting recess, all this is pre-mixed with the soil;
    • on the south side, a support for a young culture is installed, its height should be about 1 meter.

    The step-by-step technology for planting a pear is described below.

    • At the bottom of the pit from the ground, it is necessary to form a small hill. If any damage is observed on the root system, they must be cut off.
    • Pear roots are dipped into a mash, which consists of earth, clay, water and mullein. After that, the root system is placed on a mound, avoiding various root creases.
    • Next, you need to evenly cover the roots with earth, while watering at the same time. Work continues until the root neck of the seedling is 5 centimeters above the ground.
    • The soil is well compacted around the tree, after which it is tied to a support. A small elevation from the ground is formed around the planted pear, about two buckets of water are poured into the hole formed. After the water leaves, the crop is mulched.

      In the south, Chizhovskaya pear is planted in October - November. Autumn planting of a seedling does not require preliminary preparation of a hole for a tree. In this case, the planting hole is dug immediately before the rooting of the seedling. In the autumn planting, humus and ash are poured to the bottom of the pit. After that, the work is carried out in a similar way as planting a tree in the spring.

      Despite the fact that the hybrid belongs to partially pollinated crops, experienced gardeners still advise planting other pear varieties nearby for pollination.It is best if the neighbors of "Chizhovskaya" become varieties "Severyanka", which takes root perfectly in the Moscow region, or "Rogneda". These plants are mutually pollinated, so their joint growth in one area will contribute to a good yield of each crop.

      In the absence of plants that act as pollinators, the pear will be able to produce only half of its potential.

      Care

      Agrotechnical measures after planting the Chizhovskaya pear include a number of mandatory works.

      Irrigation is the priority of the entire complex. As mentioned earlier, the hybrid reacts negatively to a lack of moisture. Therefore, within a month after the rooting of the seedling on the site, soil moistening should be carried out once a week. After this period, the gardener can switch to three times watering the plant per season.

      Feeding with nutrient compounds will help to achieve pear yields.

      The introduction of fertilizers is carried out according to the scheme described below.

      • Primary fertilizer will be needed by the hybrid in its flowering phase. During this period, you need to focus on nitrogen-containing compounds. Feeding can be prepared independently. A fairly effective solution will be saltpeter diluted in water in proportions of 1: 50. Watering with fertilizer should be carried out evenly around the entire stem of the plant. The optimal amount will be 30 grams of the substance per 1 m2. As an alternative to the latter, carbamide can be used. It is diluted in a ratio of 80 grams / 5 liters of water.
      • At the end of the pear flowering time, it is necessary to fertilize the soil with nitroammophos. In this case, about a kilogram of a substance is diluted in 200 liters of water. For one plant, you will need 3 buckets of this nutrient solution.
      • Another stage of pear fertilization falls at the end of June, at which time it is necessary to use nitrogen again.
      • With the advent of autumn, the tree should be gradually prepared for wintering, for this it is worth focusing on minerals. An effective mixture for autumn fertilizer will be a set of the following ingredients: 2 tablespoons of superphosphate, 1 spoon of potassium, 10 liters of purified water.

      Another crucial step regarding the care of the Chizhovskaya variety is tree pruning. It is necessary for the proper development of the crown of the plant, as well as ensuring unhindered access of sunlight to the green mass of the crop. The formation of the appearance of a pear can be performed both in autumn and in spring. In the autumn months, sanitary molding of the culture is carried out.

      In summer, pruning is not recommended, because during this period the plant accumulates a supply of useful components in its branches. And their removal will entail the loss of these substances. In winter, the ban on cutting branches is due to negative air temperatures, at which fresh cut points will not be able to regenerate and recover.

      On a spring day, you can begin to form a plant when the average daily temperature is around the thermometer mark + 8C. The work consists in cutting branches that are parallel to the trunk, which grow at right angles towards the inside of the crown. Based on the thickness of the branches, you can use a saw, scissors or secateurs to remove them.

      With the advent of autumn, the pear will need sanitary pruning. At this time, the removal of old, dry and diseased branches on the tree should be carried out. This work must be done before the first frost.

      If there are damaged areas on the pear, they are treated with a special compound. It is prepared according to the following recipe: a glass of wax, a glass of grease and 50 grams of pine resin are heated over a fire until completely dissolved.

      In addition to pruning branches, in spring and autumn it is time to whitewash the pear trunk. In the summer, such treatment is needed to protect the trunk from burns, in the fall, whitewashing will reduce the risk of attack by rodents, and in winter it will protect against frost. The composition for work is available for sale in any store, in addition, it is quite easy to do it yourself. The optimal ratio of ingredients will be 2 kilograms of lime, the same amount of clay, which dissolve in 10 liters of water. It is necessary to whiten the trunk from the ground itself to the lower branches in height.

      Care activities also include the removal of weeds from the trunk circle. In the spring, the grass that grows there is a very favorable breeding ground for aphids. Therefore, the timely removal of weeds will help to avoid the spread of pests to the tree, where they quite actively feed on the sap of the plant. For young trees, aphids pose a rather serious danger, but regular weeding will help to avoid such situations.

      For pears, preparation for wintering is of great importance, despite the fact that the Chizhovskaya variety stands out for its good resistance to frost. For protection, the plant needs shelter. Usually, such work falls in October, and they consist in sheltering the near-trunk circle with tops from vegetables, which are sprinkled with soil on top. Such a pillow does an excellent job of protecting the root system from snow and frost.

      Despite the high quality characteristics of the variety, the tree is still susceptible to infection by some pathogens. The most serious threat to the culture is root cancer, rust, fruit rot and cytosporosis.

      It is possible to identify diseases in a timely manner by their characteristic features, a description of which is presented below.

      • root cancer formed at the root system and in the areas of grafting. In this case, neoplasms are formed on the neck, which actively increase in size and become hard. Young seedlings infected with cancer stop developing. To treat the disease, these areas should be treated with copper sulfate, and the resulting wound should be lubricated with garden decoction.
      • Rust manifested by bright characteristic spots on the green mass. As a result of the disease, the overall resistance of the tree decreases, therefore, as a rule, other diseases are added to the rust. You can cure a tree by collecting and burning infected fallen leaves. In addition, the pear is sprayed with colloidal sulfur.
      • Rot affects primarily the fruits of the tree. Pears with signs of decomposition must be removed, and the culture should be sprayed with copper chloride or Bordeaux mixture.
      • Cytosporosis appears on the trunk of a tree - brown spots appear on it. In addition, signs of the disease can also be found on old branches. Without timely treatment, the bark will crack, so it is necessary to clean the stains, then carry out a disinfecting treatment with copper sulphate, and heal the wounds on the tree with garden putty.

      There are times when a plant also becomes ill with other viruses or infections, but this is extremely rare in the Chizhovskaya hybrid.

      In addition to diseases, a fairly large list of pests attacks the pear. Among them, leafworm, apple flower beetle, ringed silkworm, bukarka and others are especially active. The last insect destroys the ovaries of fruits, in addition, it feeds on foliage. To destroy the pest, insecticides of a wide range of applications are needed.

      Among gardeners, the effective Engio store composition is very popular. The flower beetle feeds on the buds of trees, the juice from the leaves. Since the beetle destroys them from the inside, they lose the ability to develop further, so they simply fall off.

      To get rid of the insect, it is worth processing the plant with the compositions "Iskra", "Fastak" and others.

      To combat the ringed silkworm, from which the foliage of the tree suffers, the drug "Rogor" is needed. In addition, you need to find the laying of the pest and destroy it. Caterpillars are the most serious pests for pears. They eat the buds from the leaves, which, in turn, curl up and dry out. The leaf roller twists them with its web. You can destroy it with tincture of shag or tobacco. The tick feeds on sap, and prefers to winter in fallen leaves, so it is very important to remove fallen branches and leaves from the site in autumn and burn them.

      Harvesting "Chizhovskaya" pear can be carried out by the end of August. Work can be carried out in stages, since ripe pears do not tend to fall off the branches. It is recommended to store fruits in a room with a temperature of no more than + 4C and a humidity of 90%. Pears will be suitable for consumption for about 150 days. It is better to store pears in boxes with good air circulation. Each fruit can be wrapped in paper or sprinkled with sand, which will increase their keeping quality.

      Joint storage of fruits with other vegetables or fruits should be avoided, since the pear will then lose its taste. In addition, you need to regularly ventilate the room and remove mold.

      Recommendations for different regions

      As for planting young seedlings of Chizhovskaya, there are recommendations related to the region of planned cultivation. So, in the northern regions (in Siberia) or in the middle lane, it is best to plant a tree in the spring, since the culture will have enough time to adapt and develop before the onset of a harsh winter. April is the best month to work.

      As for the southern regions with warm autumns and snowy winters, planting should be postponed until the autumn months. This is due to a rather warm spring, which can cause the young plant to dry out. The end of September will be the most favorable period.

      Reviews of gardeners

      According to experienced summer residents and professional gardeners, the Chizhovskaya pear variety is a crop that in practice proves its high yield. On average, about 60 kilograms of fruit are usually harvested from one adult tree.

      In addition, reviews of the hybrid on the positive side characterize the appearance of the fruit, the organoleptic qualities and the keeping quality of the pear. Due to its transportability, it is this variety that is preferred to be cultivated for the subsequent sale of the crop.

      In addition to the high qualities of the fruits of "Chizhovskaya", the culture stands out for its resistance to frost, early maturity and unpretentiousness of agricultural technology, due to which it is successfully grown in the northern regions of Russia.
