Why do pear leaves turn red in summer?

It is not uncommon for gardeners to notice that pears, which usually have a rich dark green crown, suddenly turn red leaves. If this happens in autumn, then such a process should not cause any concern, since it is associated with the natural manifestations of photosynthesis, which reacts to the seasonal lack of heat and light. If the pear leaves turn red in summer or spring, then this has not so harmless reasons.

The reasons

The appearance of red spots can be caused by a variety of reasons:

  • improper care;
  • lack of nutrients;
  • lack of moisture;
  • plant diseases.

Nutrient deficiency

First of all, this may be due to a deficiency of phosphorus. Finding out is very simple: you need to carefully examine the reddening leaf. Redness caused by a lack of phosphorus begins with reddening of the petiole, gradually rising higher, it paints over the entire surface. The upper part of the leaves initially retains a healthy green color. A pear can be cured by adding phosphorus fertilizer to the soil.

In autumn, this should be done with extreme caution, since nitrogen is also used in phosphorus fertilizers, which activates the growth of plants, which will not allow them to prepare for wintering without stress.

Top dressing should be applied at intervals of 2-3 weeks, distributing fertilizer over the soil with a depth of 7-20 cm in diameter equal to the projection of the tree crown. In stable dry weather, the earth needs to be moistened by watering it abundantly. Given the poor solubility of phosphorus in water, it is better to feed it with Ammophos. It is desirable to fertilize from April to mid-June. Starting from July, top dressing is undesirable.

Wrong care

The next possible cause of reddening of the foliage may be waterlogged soil. Since excessive moisture interferes with the access of air to the roots. It is possible that for planting a young, still very weak tree, an unsuccessful lowland area was initially selected, in which water stagnates or groundwater flows close. In this case, the tree will be cured by transplanting it to a higher place or adding soil to the beds. With a slight increase in moisture, you can simply dig drainage ditches around the pear.

The most annoying cause of reddening of the leaves, which can lead to the loss of a tree, is caused by the incompatibility of the rootstock and scion. A universal, adapted to grow in our conditions, clonal pear rootstock has not yet been bred. Physiological incompatibility can manifest itself at different periods of development (it is not necessary that this will be noticeable already during the growing up of the seedling). The first sign of such incompatibility is manifested by the formation of swims on the tree bark at the places of budding.

Because of them, the metabolism is disturbed, which leads to the redness of the foliage. This can be fatal to the tree. In order not to encounter such a problem, you should purchase zoned planting material by asking merchants for documents on the quality of seedlings.When breeding pears in nurseries, seedlings are usually taken for rootstock - trees that are grown from the seeds of the fruit. In such pears, the incompatibility of the rootstock and scion is unlikely.

Excess lime in the planting hole also causes the foliage to turn red. The tree will be saved by organic matter introduced into the soil. To do this, dig a groove 20x20 cm in proportion to the diameter of the crown, add humus and compost to it, and then fill everything up.

You should be careful, not forgetting that it is better to do this at the very beginning of the growing season, observing a reasonable measure when applying organic matter, since an overdose of the root system can get burned.

Planting the tree too deep can also cause leaf discoloration. To eliminate this problem, it is enough to dig up the tree and lift it, making a bedding under the root.

Treatment

It is possible that the discoloration of the leaves is due to diseases of the plant. Uneven reddening in large spots indicates damage to black cancer. This terrible disease can destroy the tree completely. The main enemy of the pear is aphid. Sick leaves are folded in half when damaged by aphids. In galls - thickened places where this pest feeds, whole colonies of aphids are bred. They are very prolific, in one season this harmful insect gives up to 15 generations.

Aphids can completely destroy a pear, as it not only depletes a tree by sucking out nutrients, but also disrupts photosynthesis, covering the leaves with a black coating of sooty fungi. This reduces the frost resistance and fertility of the plant. In this case, it is impossible to remain inactive, it is necessary to do something and fight this pest. Convex red-brown dots on the foliage indicate a mite infestation of the plant.

Folk remedies

When a black cancer disease is detected, the infected bark, reddened leaves, damaged branches are removed from the tree and all this is burned. With timely measures taken, there is a chance of saving the tree. When an initial stage of tree disease is detected due to aphid colonization, it is recommended to use environmentally friendly methods. You should spray the tree with various infusions: with mustard, dandelion or celandine. For the density and stickiness of infusions, it is advised to add grated laundry soap.

Infusions are very easy to prepare. For example, to prepare an infusion from celandine, take 4-5 branches of the plant, grind them (with gloves) and add them to a bucket of boiled water, let it brew for 5 days. Depending on the number of pests, the tree is sprayed with this infusion 3-6 times in 5 days.

Chemical processing

For an unknown cause of diseases, even before the start of flowering, the pear should be treated with the universal remedy "Azofos" or "Soon", after the appearance of the fruit - "Tersel" or "Delan". With massive lesions of aphids, chemical treatment with Fufanon, Intavir, Aktara, Fitoverm, Confidor, Fufanon is effective. Chemical treatment can be carried out no more than two or three times just before harvest, at least 3 weeks before it.

Omite and Masai will save you from ticks. They are used before flowering, and then in May and July. When using chemicals, the instructions for use must be strictly followed.

Preventive measures

The main preventive measures against redness of pear leaves are quite simple and are as follows. At the very beginning of autumn, all garbage on the site should be removed, preventing the accumulation of pests.And before the start of the vegetation process and the appearance of buds, it is worth treating the tree with pesticides (Kinmiks, Agravertin).

Recommendations for beginner gardeners

    Carrying out timely preventive measures and careful care of garden trees will allow you to get a good harvest of tasty and nutritious pears.

    • It is recommended to regularly mow and clean the grass in the aisles, preventing the accumulation of aphids there.
    • Planting celery and dill in the area will attract aphid enemies - ladybugs and lacewings. They will help in pest control.
    • Red leaves on the upper branches of young trees are not an indicator of disease, they very soon acquire a healthy green color.
