Scab on a pear: why does it appear and how to get rid of it?

The pear occupies a special place as a crop grown in our country. The growing process itself requires a lot of effort and a lot of time. In this regard, gardeners are immensely upset when they find that a tree has been struck by some kind of disease. One of the most common diseases in Russia in this culture is considered to be scab. We will talk about preventive measures, causes and methods of treatment in this article.

The reasons

Scab is considered to be a fungal disease, its causative agent is the marsupial fungus Venturia pirina Aderh, popularly called Venturia. This fungus has an extremely negative effect on the pear, under its influence the flowers fall off, respectively, the ovaries do not appear on the tree and it is not able to bear fruit. The next step is the transition to the leaves, which also leads to their fall. In the case when the tree already has fruits, and only after that scab appears on it, it is the fruits that take the brunt, which is reflected in their appearance and taste.

For the spread of scab, high humidity is very important, it is she who creates a favorable microclimate for the reproduction of the fungus. Venturia spores develop actively under certain conditions, for example, in regions characterized by cold spring with rains and thunderstorms, as well as high humidity in summer. How long the moisture stays on the tree determines how quickly the scab can spread. The most dangerous period is considered to be the time from May to July, when Venturia ascospores disperse.

According to this, we can conclude that the territory of Russia is quite favorable for the development and spread of this disease. The only exception is the southern regions, due to the rather hot and dry climate, their gardeners are much less likely to encounter this problem.

Outwardly, the scab looks like spots on the fruits and leaves, the skin of the pear peels off. If the disease attacked the tree in the spring, the spots will be quite large, if in the summer - smaller. Sores and warts appear on various areas of the tree. In addition, if the infection process occurred during the harvest period, the disease may appear on the fruits after they have been harvested. After the buds open, the scab can be identified visually after about 3 weeks.

Funds

Every gardener who is faced with this problem is puzzling over how to rid the pear of this disease with the least possible consequences, physical and financial costs. There are several solutions, their effectiveness is individual in each case. Most people prefer chemicals. Undoubtedly, they will be able to influence the fungus more strongly, which makes it more likely to be destroyed. However, we must not forget that chemicals can harm the plant, and their use is not entirely justified if the disease has only affected the pear.

Consider the most common store and folk remedies to combat this disease.

store preparations

The use of store-bought preparations is appropriate only if the fungus has managed to infect the plant quite strongly. There are a lot of means to deal with it on store shelves, so it would be useful to use several at once. Treating a tree with various preparations at regular intervals will be more effective than using only one.

Among the most famous are such compositions as Topsin M, Tridex and Merpan, they have earned popularity in the Russian market and are successfully used by gardeners throughout the country. Also, a diseased tree can be treated with mineral fertilizers, such as a solution of potassium salt or ammonium nitrate. The benefits will be double, in addition to getting rid of the fungus, the compositions will saturate the plant with useful substances.

However, it must be borne in mind that any actions of such a plan must be stopped 20-25 days before the period when it is planned to harvest.

One of the popular preparations is Bordeaux mixture. It is available in powder form and contains copper sulfate and lime. The mixture is diluted with water and applied to the affected areas. In total, with such a composition, a tree can be processed a maximum of 4 times for the entire summer period. In especially advanced cases, up to 7 procedures can be performed.

If the treatment is carried out before the pear has blossomed, and at the same time the tree is heavily affected, the solution should have a three percent concentration when flowering ends - no more than 1 percent.

Bordeaux liquid is an analogue of the above mixture, with the only difference being that it already contains water, but this does not mean that it does not need to be diluted. The composition is available in bottles of 100 or 500 milliliters. The cost of the liquid is slightly higher than the cost of the powder, and the efficiency is about the same. Before the procedure, it is necessary to add water, and detailed instructions are printed on the package, according to which it is possible to calculate what concentration and at what degree of damage to the tree should be used.

"Horus" is available in the form of granules that must be dissolved in water. Contains in its composition cyprodinil, which helps to effectively cure a pear from scab. This will require 2 treatments - the first before the tree blooms, and the second immediately after. The interval should be 10 days, after which the remedy will be valid for about a month.

It is necessary to fight scab when the first signs of the disease appear on the tree. In the case when the disease has affected the fruits and leaves, and its traces are visible to the naked eye, experts recommend that only chemical treatment be carried out.

If the disease is started, it will spread quickly enough, which can lead to the loss of fruits and even the death of the plant itself.

Folk methods

You can also get rid of a pear from a disease such as scab with the help of folk remedies. However, this should only be done if the tree is still not hit hard enough. However, in milder situations, the experience of gardeners can help defeat the fungus, for example, if the tree was not completely damaged, but only partially.

Most often, mustard powder, table salt, potassium permanganate and horsetail are used for the treatment of folk methods.

It should be borne in mind that the impact of these compounds is not as fast as in the case of chemicals, however, at the same time they are absolutely not capable of harming the tree itself or the environment.

When using mustard powder, it is diluted in an amount of 80 grams in a bucket of warm water.Processing is carried out in 4 stages. The first is when the buds open, the second is when the buds form, the third is after the flowers have fallen, and the fourth is when the fruit appears on the tree.

Horsetail is prepared in the form of an infusion. A third of the bucket is rammed with a plant, filled with water and left for 3 days. As soon as the leaves bloom on the tree, it must be sprayed with this infusion.

In order to prepare a field solution, 1 kilogram of table salt is taken, which is diluted in a bucket of water. This composition processes a pear. The procedure must be carried out in early spring, even before the buds open.

A solution of sodium permanganate is prepared as follows. Potassium permanganate is diluted in proportions of 5 grams per 10 liters of water. The pear is processed when the buds open, after the end of the flowering phase and when the fruit appears on the tree. The same solution is recommended to treat the tree trunk at the beginning of the summer season.

Treatment

It is possible to cure any disease in a tree only by using comprehensive measures to combat it. Processing a pear with a solution of lime and copper sulfate should be carried out several times a season, this will help stop the disease. You can also spray the plant with any other chemical agent.

We must not forget about the removal of affected areas and the treatment of cracks. Those fruits that have already been spoiled by scab should be destroyed.

It is necessary to fight scab systematically, until the signs of the disease disappear completely. If the disease is severe, it should be treated throughout the season. A total of 5 procedures should be carried out.The first of them is carried out during the period of bud swelling, here copper sulfate will be an excellent helper, the second - in the process of bud formation, using the "Skor" tool, with it after the flowering is over, and then after 2 weeks.

This scheme works well with winter pear varieties, they need to be processed at the beginning and at the end of the summer season. Also, we must not forget that the preparations must be changed, then the effect of the treatment will be much stronger than when exposed to a composition that works in one direction.

Prevention

Treatment of scab on a pear is a rather laborious process, and any disease is easier to prevent than to get rid of it later. Therefore, there are a number of preventive measures that all gardeners should learn about. After all, even if a tree is healthy and bears excellent fruit, this does not mean that it cannot undergo this disease in the future.

Since scab affects not only pears, but also apple trees, sea buckthorn, cherries, potatoes and a huge number of other crops, its spread may well occur spontaneously, through infection from neighboring areas. Therefore, it is best if the tree grows at a small distance from others, in a well-ventilated area and not in the shade.

It should also be borne in mind that cracks are an excellent place for the development of various types of bacteria, so once a year you should inspect the tree, get rid of weak and damaged branches, and treat the affected areas with a special compound.

So that the fungus does not get on the fruits that have fallen from the branches, they must be collected as quickly as possible. Also, at the end of the summer season, you should do a general cleaning throughout the territory, for example, burn fallen leaves to prevent the spread of pathogenic bacteria and fungus. However, in the case when the disease has already struck the tree, prevention will not work, you need to use special means.

There are pear varieties that are resistant to this disease. They do not require processing, tolerate moisture well and can grow in a variety of climates. These are such species as "Annushka", "Oryol beauty", "Belarusian late" and others. However, in some cases, scab can also affect them, so prevention is an integral part of growing this fastidious crop. Every spring, the tree should be sprayed with special compounds, then by the end of summer the pear will most likely delight gardeners with tasty and healthy fruits.
