Kalina "Gordovina": description and growing tips
Each gardener loves to experiment on his site, come up with an interesting design, plant new crops. Many summer residents have discovered a very beautiful shrub viburnum "Gordovina". Description and growing tips will help you understand why this shrub is so attractive to gardeners.
Peculiarities
Kalina Gordovina performs well the function of an ornamental shrub both in urban plantations and in private courtyards. His description is very impressive. The dense crown has a diameter of up to three meters, the branches are located close to each other, so the plant looks lush and beautiful. Its height can be five meters in height. In one place, a tree can live up to fifty years.
Fresh shoots are gray in color. Old branches look like other trees - with small cracks in the bark. The leaves of the viburnum are quite large - about 20 cm, have a sharp top with small notches along the edges, attached to the shoots with thin, slightly fluffy petioles. The outer part of the leaf is wrinkled, has a rich green color, the inner one is a grayish tint. The leaves are very pleasant to the touch, like a soft fluffy fabric. Because of these features, viburnum received another name - felt.
In the Gordovina variety, there are plants with variegated leaves, which are even more valued for their decorative effect. Even in moments when the plant has not yet bloomed, it looks very attractive, thanks to its unusual foliage. And when flowers appear on a bush, it is impossible to take your eyes off it.In warm regions, the tree blooms in May, in the northern regions and the middle lane, viburnum appears in all its glory in mid-June. Cream-colored spherical inflorescences appear on the branches, each ball contains a large number of flowers with a diameter of about one and a half centimeters.
For a whole month, viburnum pleases others with its beauty, this is how long the flowering continues. In addition to the fact that the tree serves as a decoration for the site, flowers are also used for medical purposes. After the buds fall on the branches, small oval-shaped fruits appear, for example, like cranberries or blueberries. Like flowers, they do not crumble for a long time, and the tree acquires a new outfit for long days, changing the decoration of the garden. The first period of ripening is characterized by green berries, which at first are barely visible in the lush and dense foliage.
But gradually the color changes, in August it is pink, in early September it is red, by the end of ripening it is black, it is already October, and in warm regions it is all November. So it is not surprising that gardeners fell in love with shrubs for their decorative qualities. It is a decoration of the garden from early spring to late autumn. The black berry is the main difference from the common viburnum, the berries of which are no less useful and beautiful, but have a bright red color. Care and planting for both species have much in common.
Very often, what is a huge plus for the southern regions can become a minus for the northern regions. The disadvantages of this magnificent shrub include late ripening of berries. In the Far East, frosts are already setting in at this time. But, as gardeners note, a berry seized by frost acquires an interesting taste with a slight bitterness, it can be used, its healing properties are not lost.
Another disadvantage that gardeners have learned to deal with is the uneven ripening of fruits on the brush, since the flowers bloom alternately.
But summer residents remove the brush with partially ripened berries and send them to ripen in a warm room. Usually after five days all the fruits become ripe.
Landing and care
The ideal soil for viburnum Gordovina is neutral or slightly acidic. The plant is not suitable for sandy, peaty and podzolic soils. On infertile soils, it will also grow, but you need to be prepared for the fact that flowering and fruiting will be worsened. But viburnum needs good lighting, it needs to be placed in sunny places, or at least in those where the sun appears for half a day.
The soil for planting is prepared in about a month: phosphorus, potassium, peat are added. Holes are prepared with a depth of 50 cm. The distance between plants is left about three meters.
You can prepare the soil in the following way:
- to organic soil, including peat and humus, you need to add three tablespoons of urea, one glass of wood ash;
- well-straightened roots are placed in the recess, carefully covered with the composition, while the root neck should be deepened by no more than five centimeters;
- after planting is completed, a small depression is made near the plant, water is poured into it;
- mulch is prepared from sawdust and placed under the seedling.
Seedlings are watered in the evening, adult bushes need watering during the growing season and the formation of fruits. Loosening is required near the trunks, which will provide the necessary oxygen for the roots. Like all trees and shrubs, viburnum "Gordovina" needs to be fed, namely:
- in the spring, before the leaves have yet appeared, urea is added under the bush in the amount of two tablespoons;
- before flowering, two tablespoons of potassium sulfide are added;
- in July, the plant will need mineral fertilizers of about 60 g;
- in the fall, humus, phosphorus, and potassium are used as top dressing for viburnum;
- after two years of life, rotted manure, phosphorus, and potassium are introduced into the soil in autumn. If the weather is dry, fertilizers must be diluted with water.
The shrub belongs to resistant plants in relation to diseases and pests. But this does not mean that he does not need preventive treatment. It can be affected by aphids, comma-shaped scutes, and moths. Karbofos helps in the fight against scale insects, and they cope with aphids by planting a trichogram. Powdery mildew and spotting can affect viburnum. In these cases, the plants are treated with fungicides. And for prevention, the bushes are treated with garlic and tobacco infusions.
reproduction
You can increase the number of shrubs on your site with the help of seeds, cuttings and layering, dividing the bush.
- Seeds. Seeds are sown in late autumn or early spring. Preparation takes a long time. Before placing them in the ground, they are kept in the refrigerator for seven months. Then the seeds are lowered into the ground to a depth of no more than three centimeters. First, a root will begin to form. If planted in the fall, then the sprout will appear in the spring. Those who are already familiar with the shrub and know all the rules of care and planting know how to speed up the germination process. To do this, the first three months the seeds are kept at a temperature of +18 degrees, and the remaining - from -3 to +5 degrees.
- cuttings. When propagated by cuttings, the material is harvested in late June or early July: one third of the cutting is cleared of leaves, and the cut is placed in water. To speed up the appearance of roots, you can add a special stimulant - root. When the root has appeared, the cutting is moved to the greenhouse, but it can also be planted in the ground.
Be sure to cover a small plant with a cap, which can serve as an ordinary plastic bottle. The cap is periodically removed for airing and watering.
- layering. For propagation by layering in spring, grooves are dug near the tree in advance, the shoots are bent to the ground and buried in the grooves. They take root in autumn. And then they can be transplanted to a separate place. But you can postpone this process until spring.
- The division of the bush. If the breeding method is chosen by dividing the bush, then this is done in spring or autumn. The plant must be divided so that each separated part has at least three renewal buds.
pruning
In the spring, you need to prune the viburnum. Sick and old branches are removed. After six years, all old branches are cut off at the root, about 7-8 viable shoots remain for the development of the bush. To make it beautiful, pinch branches over 40 cm long with your hands. If you would like to see on the site not a bush with a rich crown, but a tall tree, then the trunk remains, and the shoots are cut off. When harvesting, the brushes are cut with secateurs.
Usage
Kalina "Gordovina" is resistant to drought, so it is used to decorate squares, alleys and parks. On especially dry days, the bushes will not lose their attractiveness and will wait for rain. The plant also withstands smoke, dust and gas pollution. It will also become a wonderful decoration in the courtyards of multi-storey buildings, bringing bright notes to the surrounding landscape.It is readily used as a hedge, it is a beautiful and reliable protection from animals that want to enter the garden.
With its help, the slopes of areas with difficult terrain are strengthened. A powerful and branched root system is a great helper. It is able to hold the soil and prevent it from being washed away by groundwater.
The shrub looks especially beautiful if you use a longline planting, especially if there are a lot of trees. The color will change with the season, from white in early spring to black in late fall. And all this against the backdrop of bright, green, lush foliage.
From a fifteen-year-old bush, you can collect a bucket of berries. They can be consumed fresh, they make delicious compotes, juices, jelly, jam, marmalade.
