Description and features of growing potatoes "Colette"
Potato variety "Colette" was created thanks to the close cooperation of German and Russian agronomists. This is an early planting variety with a growing season of 75 days. The maturation of the first tuber occurs already on the 55-60th day from the moment of planting. The tops die off on the 80th day.
Subject to all conditions for cultivation and care, this variety can please with a yield of up to 250 centners per hectare.
Peculiarities
Potato variety "Colette" is characterized by a low and upright bush. Its sheets are small in size, bright green in color and have soft waves along the edges. Flowering is expressed in the appearance of lilac inflorescences of small size. From one bush, on average, you can expect about 10-15 fruits. All of them are medium in size, small fruits are extremely rare. One potato contains no more than 10% starch. Separately, it is worth noting that this variety can be stored for a long time. More than 90% of the harvest for the new season remains in its original form.
Of the advantages of the potato variety "Colette" can be distinguished:
- bountiful harvest;
- good taste qualities;
- excellent keeping quality;
- resistance to various diseases;
- uniform shoots of shoots;
- the same size of all fruits;
- potato tuber is even and smooth.
Despite the large number of advantages, this variety still has one significant drawback. Cultivation of "Colette" is carried out exclusively on light fertile soil.Heavy soil will not make it possible to get a bountiful harvest, because the sprouts may simply not sprout.
The description of the variety, as well as its characteristics, have only positive reviews.
cultivation
Potato variety "Colette" is early. However, the timing of planting is influenced by the area where it is planned to grow potatoes. In the southern regions, potatoes can be sown in early May. But experienced gardeners warn that late and early planting can significantly affect the volume of the crop, so you should not rush to plant potatoes. For this variety, it is desirable to choose a site with light loamy or sandy loamy soil. Also, the site should be open and accessible to sunlight. In winter, open areas are cleared of snow more quickly. For landing, choose a day on which the air temperature will be at least +10 degrees. The earth should be warm, plentifully fed and moist.
Preparation for planting should be carried out in the autumn. Before the start of winter, it is advisable to dig the ground well. This will allow you to extract harmful insects and their larvae from deep in the ground, remove the remaining grass, which can provoke diseases. Winter frosts will destroy all insects dangerous for vegetable crops, and in the spring, already prepared soil will be waiting for you. Digging the soil in spring should be accompanied by the addition of manure.
It is also recommended to fertilize the land in the form of superphosphate, which will provide the soil with the necessary dose of minerals, potassium and nitrogen.
seed preparation
In order for the potato harvest to be plentiful, most gardeners agree that it is preferable to plant already germinated tubers in open ground.It is recommended to germinate them in the spring (February, March). To do this, seed potatoes are laid out on the surface of a box or floor. Choose a warm and bright place for this, this will speed up the process.
For planting, it is advisable to select tubers in advance, the average weight of which does not exceed 80 grams. If there are larger tubers, it is necessary to cut them into several parts. Moist air is desirable for germination, so it is recommended to create the effect of a greenhouse yourself. To do this, place potato tubers in the ground mixed with sawdust. Add a small amount of water. Next, cover the box with a thin layer of film and leave until the first sprouts appear.
When sprouts appear, it is advisable to immediately remove the film, allowing them to germinate on their own.
Landing
This variety of potatoes is preferable to plant on a plot with winter vegetables (annual grass, beans and flax). It is possible to plant a variety of "Colette" with such a "neighbor" as beans. It has been observed that if potatoes and beans grow together, the harvest of both is more abundant. It is also worth noting that this variety can be planted in one area for many years in a row, without worrying that the quality of the crop will decrease.
It is advisable to divide a previously prepared area with loosened and moistened soil into the required number of beds. This will facilitate the planting process and subsequent care of the potatoes. Do not forget that the soil must be well warmed up, otherwise the potato seeds will not take root. The hole is made at a depth of 5-10 centimeters. Potatoes are laid with a sprout up and lightly sprinkled with soil. The preferred interval between potato bushes is 35 centimeters. Between rows - approximately 60 centimeters.
Provided that the planting of potatoes was carried out in a favorable climate and in fertile soil, the first shoots can be observed in seven days.
Care
This variety is popular due to its stable and plentiful harvest. But in order to grow it, you need to spend a lot of time and effort. One of the main conditions for growing the Colette variety is the presence of fertile soil, and therefore monitoring the composition of the soil should be a regular exercise. During the period when the potato bush begins to bloom, it is recommended to carefully monitor whether the plant has enough water.
The main and mandatory measures for the care of potatoes "Colette":
- Spud potatoes are needed at least three times throughout the season. In order to stimulate the growth of stems, it is advisable to hill the plant after the first shoots are noticed. It is also recommended to lightly sprinkle young sprouts with soil, which will help protect the shoots at night from a possible cold snap. The remaining two hillings are carried out with an interval of 14-20 days. It is best to do this after a rainstorm. This will promote gas exchange in the soil.
- loosen the soil recommended after planting potatoes. There is no need to wait until the first shoots appear. Thanks to this agrotechnical measure, the soil is saturated with air and the potato root system begins to develop more actively. The loosened soil is less prone to weeds, the formation of an earthen crust on the upper layer and favors the growth of the tuber. At first, it is desirable to loosen the soil, only slightly touching the top layer, so as not to touch the recently planted seed.Deeper loosening of the soil can be carried out after potato bushes grow. This will keep the soil moist.
- water the plant recommended only in dry and hot weather. Care must be taken to ensure that the soil remains moist, but not wet. Otherwise, there is a high risk of fungal diseases.
- feed the plant preferably 2-3 times for the whole season. It is preferable to introduce fertilizers before the potato bush begins to bloom. As a top dressing, Nitrofozka, Mortar and Effekton are the most popular. The fact that the plant needs top dressing can be determined visually. If the potato stem is thin and sluggish, slowly developing, then the plant should be fed immediately. As soon as you notice the appearance of buds, you need to make a second top dressing of the plant. Use ash and potassium sulfate as fertilizer. Final feeding is done at the stage of the appearance of flowers. In this case, it is recommended to use superphosphate.
Diseases and pests
Despite the fact that the potato variety "Colette" is not subject to the main list of diseases of vegetable crops, it is still recommended to carry out preventive treatment of the root system and tubers. Polyram, Ordan and Kurzat are used as medicinal preparations. It is necessary to use these drugs strictly following the instructions.
Due to the fact that the root system is subject to the adverse effects of isolates and phytophthora, it is advisable to spray the bushes with the Kuproskat therapeutic agent at a rate of 400 liters per hectare of land.
The most dangerous insects that can cause significant damage to the crop include:
- Colorado beetles. They are dangerous because they lay many eggs on the back of the leaves. After a couple of days, the larvae hatch and eat the foxes of the potato bush. You can fight this pest by systematically removing them from the leaves and treating them with Prestige, Masterpiece and Batsikol.
- Wireworms. They are dangerous because they eat fruits, making tunnels in them. Wireworms are very voracious, and therefore it is extremely difficult to get rid of them. The fight against this pest is best carried out in the spring or autumn, when preparing the soil for planting. For example, in the spring, seven days before planting potatoes, it is recommended to set "traps". To do this, take a few plastic cups and fill them with sour cream and potato skins. Then bury them deep. After a couple of days, the wireworms will slip, after which it is necessary to eliminate them.
- Fluorimea. An extremely dangerous pest that "specializes" exclusively in potatoes. Gardeners often call it potato moth. It is dangerous because it multiplies quite quickly, producing many caterpillars that devour leaves and even fruits located shallow in the ground. You can get rid of them with the help of Iskra or by installing pheromone traps near the beds, which are sold in all garden stores.
