How to grow potatoes of the Nevsky variety?

How to grow Nevsky potatoes?

Despite the abundance of potato varieties, every gardener has his favorite ones, which are invariably sown every year. Among these, the variety "Nevsky" is often found. This article will tell about the characteristics and rules for growing this species.

Peculiarities

Potato "Nevsky" has been known since 1976, when it appeared as a result of mixing varieties "Candidate" and "Veselovskaya". It was entered into the State Register in 1982. To date, "Nevsky" is one of the most common, it is sown with about ¼ of the fields, it is actively grown by farmers and "ordinary" summer residents. Such popularity is due to the optimal balance between the taste of the crop, its starch content, high yield and unpretentious care.

The variety belongs to early ripening. The crop can be harvested already in early to mid-August, that is, 75-90 days after germination. The culture demonstrates high productivity - up to 10-15 tubers are collected from a bush. Given that their weight is 90-130 grams, up to 2 kg of crop is harvested from each bush.

The taste qualities of "Nevsky" are also on top. Root crops are rounded, the same shape, smooth. The pulp is white, not crumbly. The starch content in fruits is no more than 15%, so they are good for soups and salads. But for frying and mashing this variety is hardly suitable.

Bushes have spreading tops, but they are low. The color of the leaves depends on the characteristics of the soil, climate and care. It can be either light green or more saturated. The variety has the ability to quickly recover after being eaten by the Colorado potato beetle. The plant has lush white flowers.

Among the characteristics of the variety, resistance to late blight and cancer is noted. The variety is also resistant to high temperatures. This is due to the powerful and long root system, due to which the plant extracts moisture from the deep layers of the soil. Thanks to the spreading of the bush, it is possible to reduce the drying of the soil. And the leaves are able to curl up into a tube in the heat, thereby reducing the surface for evaporation of moisture. Excessive humidity is a little more dangerous for the bush, but in general this variety tolerates it well.

Landing

This variety is suitable for pre-germination, however, when planting, you need to be extremely careful about the condition of the sprouts, avoiding damage to them. Germination lasts about 10-14 days at a temperature of 15-17°C. To do this, choose healthy fruits of medium size. The size of the sprouts is about 2-3 cm. Before germination, it is recommended to disinfect the tubers with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Suitable soil for the Nevsky variety is sandy or loamy. Waterlogged soils and shaded areas should be avoided. Do not use fresh manure, as this will negatively affect the taste of the crop. In addition, this method increases the likelihood of phytophthora development.

Since potatoes are part of the crop rotation, you do not need to plant them in the same place where other nightshade crops grew last year. In this case, the risk of infection of the bushes with diseases typical of crops increases. But the soil after growing pumpkins, legumes, beets, corn is suitable. No need to abuse fertilizers, potatoes of this type do not need their excessive amounts.

Despite the relative unpretentiousness, this variety requires planting in warm soils (not lower than 14 ° C). The lack of sunlight will also negatively affect its growth.

It is recommended to apply organic fertilizers to the soil: peat, compost, humus, manure, bird droppings (based on approximately 5-10 kg per 1 m2). After the crop is harvested, you can enrich the soil with minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). Due to their higher concentration, they are applied in a smaller volume - 20-30 kg per 1 m2.

Holes are recommended to be made at a distance of half a meter from each other, with a depth of about 20 cm. It is recommended to keep 60-70 cm between rows. This will simplify the care process, including hilling the bushes.

This variety can be planted in several ways. The most common, used in small areas of a potato field with even terrain, is digging holes with a shovel. 1-2 tubers are lowered into the resulting recesses, and sprinkled with earth on top. You can immediately add a little ash or humus to the hole.

It is important to remember that this variety cannot be grown by cutting a large tuber into pieces. Damage to at least 2-3 sprouts is fraught with the fact that the bushes will not appear.

The ridge method has become more widespread on loamy, heavy soils. To do this, ridges are formed with a tractor, walk-behind tractor or chopper, the height of which is at least 20 cm. The width between them is 50-60 cm. Then, tubers are planted on these ridges at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other.

Similar to this technology is the trench method, which is optimal for sandy soils. Only, unlike the ridge, it involves lowering the tubers to the bottom of the trench. Its depth is 10-15 cm, and the distance between adjacent trenches is about 70 cm.

Care

Already after the 20th of July, the tops of the Nevsky begin to dry out. In mid-August or a little later, you can start harvesting. Usually, first, several bushes are dug up for testing to make sure that the tubers are ripe. If the taste does not seem ripe enough, then you can “hold” the tubers for a couple more weeks. However, it is not worth delaying harvesting, otherwise the potatoes will begin to wither and decrease in size. To extract the tubers, use a pitchfork, a shovel or a walk-behind tractor.

You should not immediately put the crop in a bag, you need to give it some time to dry in the air, under the sun. Do not dig up potatoes on a rainy, wet day. It may rot in storage. When tubers are exposed, for example, with abundant watering or after rain, mulching can be carried out. For this, straw is usually used, which then also acts as humus.

One of the most important procedures for caring for potatoes is loosening. Thanks to him, it is possible to improve the aeration of the soil, to avoid stagnant moisture. It is convenient to use a rake for work, loosening the soil layer by no more than 2 cm.

During the growing season, bushes are necessarily hilled. The process is the formation of a small mound around the plant with a hoe. The first procedure is carried out when the bush reaches a height of 10-14 cm. Hilling during this period is one of the main preventive measures in the fight against late blight and root rot, and also stimulates the formation of lateral root processes. After 20-25 days, re-hilling is performed.

During loosening and hilling, as well as, as necessary, it is necessary to carry out weeding.Weeds removed from the ground should not be left on the field - they attract insects and can provoke the development of rot.

During the active growth of the stems, they can be helped by adding a solution of urea. For 10 liters of water you need 1 tablespoon. This solution is poured half a liter under each bush. Additionally, the plant can also be stimulated during the period of budding. To do this, prepare a solution of 10 liters of water, a glass of ash and a tablespoon of superphosphate. Consumption - 0.5 liters per bush. During the formation of tubers, it is permissible to introduce potash top dressing, which will increase the yield.

Diseases and pests

The manufacturer declares the resistance of the variety to verticillium, cancer, phytophthora, alternariosis, scab. But nematodes pose a great danger to the Nevsky. Not being detected and exterminated in a timely manner, this attack is capable of destroying the entire crop.

The difficulty of dealing with nematodes (these are small worms) is the inability to detect a lesion at an early stage, since the roots are damaged. However, simple prevention can prevent their occurrence. To do this, a careful selection of seed material, processing and disinfection of the soil, regular weeding, and loosening are carried out.

If the disease has not been prevented, it is better to remove the affected bushes until the nematodes have covered the entire field. Sick plants are dug up and burned, their places of growth are disinfected. Nematodes do not tolerate the smell of marigolds. Flowers can be planted around the perimeter of a potato field. If its area is large, then marigolds can also be placed in some places between the rows.

To combat Colorado beetles, treatment with suitable insecticides is sufficient (Prestige, Corado, etc.).The procedure is carried out in accordance with the recommendations on the package.

With increased soil acidity, there is a risk of tuber infection with wireworms (small worms that look like a piece of wire). In most cases, this can be prevented by deep (up to 25 cm) digging of the soil in the autumn. You can increase its efficiency by adding wood ash. Digging should be repeated in the spring. Lime, chalk, ammonia fertilizers can reduce acidity.

If tubers are suspected to be damaged by wireworm larvae, baits can be made. A piece of carrot or potato should be planted on a stick and dug into the ground so that the end of the stick sticks out on the surface. After 2-3 days, the bait is removed along with the larvae. If necessary, the procedure is repeated.

For adults, the bait is placed on the bottom of a liter jar, which is dug into the ground. For every 10 acres, one such bank is needed. After a couple of days, the bank is also dug up along with the pests. With a strong defeat, when folk methods do not help get rid of the wireworm, insecticides are used. The latter should be applied exactly following the instructions.

During the growing season of the bushes, preventive treatment of them from the bear is recommended. To do this, you can sprinkle the soil with ash or use special preparations.

In general, deep digging of the soil in autumn and spring allows preventing the appearance of pests, as well as rodents. If larvae and worms are found at this time, they should be removed from the ground.

Despite the Nevsky's immunity to late blight, improper care can cause damage. It is easier to exclude phytophthora by observing the principles of planting and care.Too close planting of bushes should be avoided, loosen in a timely manner, hill the soil, remove weeds, and avoid stagnant moisture.

It is recommended to remove the affected bushes, and for the rest - to carry out preventive treatment. Folk methods include an infusion of garlic arrows. Specialized preparations - "Oksihom" (if phytophthora is observed before flowering) and "Bravo" (used after flowering).

"Nevsky" does not like high humidity. As a rule, falling rainfall is sufficient for its growth. In dry seasons, you can water the bushes once a week, flooding each of them abundantly and making sure that the soil does not erode. It is necessary to water under the root so that water that has fallen on the leaves does not provoke a burn.

Storage

Good keeping quality is another advantage of the variety. The optimum storage temperature is +5°C. With an increase in this indicator, the development of sprouts occurs. However, even if the temperature regime is observed, this process can begin at the end of February. To extend the shelf life and prevent the awakening of tubers allows breaking off the sprouts.

If you plan to harvest seed material yourself for the next year, it is recommended to take potatoes that appeared on the bushes that bloomed first. They should be noted somehow already during the flowering period.

Tubers for seeds are dug up at the same time as the rest of the crop. Too large, as well as small ones, should be immediately removed. The optimal size is the size of a chicken egg or a little smaller. Rotten, green and damaged also will not work. It is impossible to use tubers damaged by insects - there is a high probability of being inside the larvae.

After drying the potatoes a little on the street, they are sent to the cellar, where they are laid out in wooden boxes in one layer. After a couple of days, the boxes should be briefly exposed to the sun to start the solanine production process in the potatoes.

Recommendations

Reviews about the variety "Nevsky" are mostly positive. It has been grown for several years. Moreover, in different summer periods (dry or, on the contrary, rainy), it demonstrates an equally good harvest. Gardeners also note the unpretentiousness of potatoes. It is enough to apply fertilizer during planting, and also, as necessary, process plants from the Colorado potato beetle, nematodes and bears.

On the net you can find statements about the insufficiently high taste qualities of Nevsky. However, experienced gardeners respond to this by saying that you just need to be able to grow it. The secret lies in the introduction of pure wood ash. It must be placed in the hole, and then use an ash-based serum to spray the bushes.

This variety does not differ in friability, but this figure can be slightly increased. Adding a small amount of ash to the hole during planting allows you to make the tubers more crumbly.

It is better to plant potatoes in the northern regions after preheating the soil with black polyethylene. The latter spreads on the ground a few days before planting seeds.

If frost persists or threatens, it is better to sow potatoes also under a film stretched over installed metal arcs. After germination, the film is removed during the day and returned to the arcs at night when the temperature drops.
