The main stages of preparing potatoes for planting
All gardeners dream of a big harvest. But at the same time, many of them do not process potatoes before planting, simply taking them out of storage and cellars. However, this is not quite the right position, since the preparation of tubers can significantly increase the yield. To achieve good results, it is recommended to start it in the fall.
Peculiarities
In order not to make mistakes when working with vegetables, it is worth studying all the subtleties of the process. But first of all, it is necessary to understand why people process potatoes. Here are the main reasons.
- If everything is done correctly, this will help start processes in the tubers that stimulate more active sprout formation. Also, in the future, the root system will develop much better. This will make it possible to obtain very early and uniform seedlings.
- If you sort the potatoes and separate all the bad tubers, this will greatly affect the future harvest. First of all, it is necessary to remove all weak and rotten potatoes, as well as those that do not have sprouts at all or are, but very weak. In this case, potatoes will rise evenly.
It is also worth knowing that the preparation itself includes such stages as gardening fruits, selecting the strongest tubers, germination and, of course, disinfection, which is the most important in the preparatory work. You can also do growth stimulation, so that the yield will increase significantly.
Tuber sorting
The further harvest largely depends on this process. It has already been proven that potatoes up to sixty grams in size, that is, a vegetable similar to a chicken egg, are considered the optimal size for planting. One or two main sprouts should form from it. They produce a small number of shoots underground and tubers, which grow quite large as a result.
If you take a larger vegetable for planting, then there will be significantly more sprouts, respectively. In this case, a lot of shoots are formed, but they will be smaller. The same applies to tubers. Therefore, it is better to take planting material of medium size.
In order to reap a rich harvest, you need to choose the potato that has many eyes on its surface. In the future, he will give many shoots, which means there will be more potatoes. To slightly increase their number, you can use the following method.
A month before planting, you need to take a potato and make a cut about one centimeter across it. It is necessary to store tubers in a warm place where the temperature does not fall below ten degrees.
Due to this, all the nutritional components are sent from the upper part to the lower kidneys, which, without additional help, do not “wake up” well. This helps them wake up earlier and begin to develop more actively.
Sorting of potatoes should begin after the harvest has already been harvested. It is necessary to select all tubers that are either damaged during harvesting or are naturally deformed. After that, the root crops must be placed in the shade, ideally under some kind of shelter. They should be outdoors, but at the same time, protection from the rain is also important.So they are kept for two weeks, while turning once every four days.
It is also very important to protect the tubers from sunlight, which can ruin the crop.
This procedure changes the color of the potato to a matte and gives it a green tint. Solanine is to blame, which in large quantities is very dangerous for people. Therefore, it is important that those tubers that have turned green should not be eaten or given to animals. But this process will destroy all the bacteria and fungi that were on the skin. Many people treat this procedure with great disdain, but it allows you to grow a healthy crop.
It is very important to sort the potatoes by weight. After all, if you plant potatoes of different sizes, then more tubers will sprout in one area, and fewer in the other. The best option would be to divide the crop into several types. Sort by size. You can do this both in autumn and in spring.
Many people think that sorting in the spring is better, but experienced gardeners say that autumn activities will not spoil the future harvest at all.
Getting sprouts
The main purpose of germination, or, in other words, vernalization, is to obtain not only strong, but also sufficiently healthy sprouts. The most popular methods are wet soaking and dry sprouting, which have been considered the most effective for many years. Both of these methods can be done at home.
To do this, you need to get planting material from the storage in the spring and spend several hours preparing vegetables for planting. If everything is done correctly, you can get not only a very early, but also a rich harvest. It is worth considering all the methods of germination and choose the one that suits you best.
Light
This method can be divided into two varieties. The first type is long-term germination, and the second is short.
long
If this method of germination is used, then the potatoes need to be prepared a month in advance. To do this, all the tubers are placed in small boxes so that their upper eyes look up. There should not be more than two layers, but if possible, it is better to spread the tubers in one layer.
Then the boxes are taken out to a lighted place. They need to be sprayed once a week so that the potatoes do not fade. This method provokes the early appearance of sprouts, as well as root tubercles. The temperature required for this should not be less than twelve degrees. However, it is not necessary to lay out the potatoes in sufficiently warm rooms or near heaters, as the sprouts will be long and brittle.
A short
This light germination is done a week or two before planting the potatoes in the ground. After the time of frost has passed, it is necessary to select a small area on the site. On it you need to spread the potatoes, and then cover it with a layer of hay or straw, the thickness of which should be up to twelve centimeters.
After that, everything is additionally covered with plastic wrap. It will help retain moisture and warmth. It will also protect the planting product from sudden changes in temperature. This will allow you to get sprouts that will be strong and will not break when planting. In addition, crop yields will rise to fifteen percent.
Wet
This method of preparation is even easier to handle. Potatoes are placed in suitable containers - these can be boxes and baskets.Then the vegetables are sprinkled with sawdust or high-quality humus and placed in a closed room, where they are stored at temperatures below fifteen degrees. Do not forget about maintaining the moisture of the substrate.
This method has many advantages. After all, in this case, the formation of all sprouts occurs. This means that shoots will appear faster and will be strong enough. The process of preparing potatoes with this method is reduced to fifteen days.
However, it must be observed that the sprouts are not too large, since during planting they can be damaged, and then all the work will be useless.
There is another method that combines two approaches to germination. This is a combined germination of tubers. For starters, potatoes keep for two to three weeks in a well-lit room. Then, when small pecks of sprouts have appeared, you can soak them in a moist substrate.
It will take about a week for roots to begin to develop near the base of the sprouts. Sometimes it takes a little longer. After that, you can plant the finished planting material in the ground.
warming up
It happens that there is no time for germination, but you also don’t want to plant potatoes without preparation at all. The problem is solved very simply - you need to take the potatoes out of the basement and warm them up for at least three or four days. However, the temperature should rise gradually.
First, you need to hold the culture for one day at a temperature of up to fifteen degrees, and then raise it to twenty to twenty-five degrees. You can raise the temperature even higher, but many gardeners do not recommend doing this in order to avoid poor taste of the future crop.
withering
For quick heating, the withering method is also used.To cope with the preparation of vegetables in this case is simple: you need to lay out the potatoes in one layer either on the floor or directly in the boxes. The room where they will stand should not be hot or stuffy. Literally in a week, sprouts will appear, and potatoes can be planted. The only disadvantage of this method is that the potato loses a lot of moisture.
The appearance of sprouts in plastic bags
This method of germination allows sprouts to appear in the shortest possible time. To do this, you need to take transparent bags that can fit up to six kilograms of potatoes. Holes must be cut in its upper part so that there is good ventilation, and then put the potatoes inside. Then the packages need to be hung up and covered with a film, which must be slightly opened from time to time.
This shelter helps the vegetable to endure cold temperatures in the air. Even with small frosts, the potatoes will not be damaged, because the heat under the film remains for a very long time. This method allows you to get very early shoots, and the potato yield increases up to twenty percent.
Additional processing
A very important stage of preparation is the disinfection of seed potatoes. It allows you to remove the remaining fungi and bacteria after the winter. This must be done at least two days before planting in open ground. To do this, you can use the following drugs:
- a solution of manganese in the proportion of one gram per ten liters of water;
- a solution of boric acid, adding fifty grams of the product to ten liters of water;
- copper solution, for the preparation of which ten grams of copper sulfate must be dissolved in ten liters of water;
- you can still dissolve thirty grams of formalin in ten liters of water;
- you can also choose zinc sulfate, using ten grams of the product per bucket of water.
For disinfection, you need to soak the potatoes in any such solution for half an hour. An exception is a formalin solution, in which potatoes cannot be kept for more than fifteen minutes. After this procedure, the vegetables need to be dried and proceed to their germination.
To date, there are a large number of various purchased disinfectants for this vegetable crop. They not only kill various infections, but also protect the plant from pests. The most common among them are "Prestige", "Commander", and others.
These products should be used immediately before planting. In this case, you need to be very careful, because the composition of the protectants is far from harmless.
There are summer residents who do not treat potatoes with poison at all, but use folk remedies for this. For example, extracts from plants such as garlic or onions. However, the culture in such solutions must be kept up to twelve hours. Yes, and the processing is not so effective.
You can also treat potatoes with growth regulators - such as Heteroauxin. For this, a solution is prepared in the proportion of eight grams per liter of water. This will help germinate all the buds on the potatoes. It is very useful to do and spraying the stems. This process will increase the yield, and quite significantly.
Mineral fertilizers can also be used. For example, four grams of superphosphate, carbamide, and also potassium salt are dissolved in ten liters of water. With this solution, it is necessary to spray potatoes in the proportion of two hundred grams of mineral fertilizers per kilogram of potatoes. This must be done two days before landing.This treatment will increase the yield by fifteen percent.
A good solution would be to use a folk remedy - for example, try to prepare the crop by dusting potato seeds with wood ash. This helps increase the starch content of the potatoes by 2 percent, making them more crumbly and tastier. For this, fifty grams of ash per ten kilograms of tubers will be enough.
Summing up, we can say that the preparation of potatoes for planting is carried out in several stages. Each of them is important in its own way for a good and healthy harvest. And if you use at least some methods, you can please yourself and your family not only with early, but also with delicious potatoes.
