Strawberry "Furor": variety description and cultivation
A rare summer cottage does without planting strawberries, especially if there are children in the family. The Furor strawberry deserves special attention. This variety belongs to remontant - it has the ability to bloom and bear fruit several times per season. And this quality is highly valued, especially in modern breeding achievements.
Characteristic
Strawberries of the Furor variety are popular among both experienced gardeners and beginners. It is worth considering the description of this variety in more detail. Its fruits have a very attractive appearance, and the yield is quite high. In addition, this strawberry is unpretentious in care and perfectly resists diseases and pests. Root rot, powdery mildew and other fungal diseases will not take it.
This variety appeared in Holland quite recently - it has been on sale since 2014. It has already become widespread in Poland, Great Britain, and, of course, in Holland itself. In the EU countries, it is also very popular and sold everywhere.
In regions with a warm climate, the fruiting season increases significantly.
Variety "Furor" is classified as a neutral day remontant species. It has the highest characteristics, including due to the fact that the crop is harvested from April to December (for the northern regions from May to October).
A notable feature of this variety is that the fruits ripen very quickly. The fruits ripen in peculiar waves, which makes it possible to grow the berry for commercial purposes, given the high yield of the variety.In addition, culture can have a year-round turnover. Strawberry "Furor" belongs to the Flevo Berry line from Flevoplant B.V.
You can grow this berry in tunnels, open ground and greenhouses. Interestingly, the plant can be grown in a pot using hydroponics.
The bush of the Furor variety is quite compact, but with an abundance of leaves on it, the plates of which are far apart and three-lobed in structure. The leaves are noticeably wrinkled, with large teeth along the edge, a rich green color. Peduncles with many berries, long. They do not stop forming under any weather conditions. The berries of this variety themselves have such characteristic features as:
- uniformity in size - the berries at the beginning of fruiting do not change shape, therefore they will not become huge or comb-shaped;
- cone shape, slightly elongated, generally correct;
- berry weight - about 33 g;
- there is a small neck.
One of the nuances is that the berries become smaller by the end of summer, but not significantly. There is a small percentage of crooked and slightly rounded fruits, as well as those with no neck. But the low taste qualities characteristic of almost all remontant varieties are deprived of fruits - they are really tasty. Berries have the following characteristics:
- color red, bright and saturated;
- the skin has a specific glossy sheen that remains even during storage;
- if you keep them in the refrigerator, they do not darken;
- the taste is pleasant, without acid, the fruits have a high sugar content;
- the pulp is dense, without voids in the middle, has elasticity;
- the skin is quite dense, and the seeds are small, medium immersed in the fruit.
Strawberry "Furor" gives excellent performance in terms of transportability and storage capacity.And according to some gardeners, it tastes like garden strawberries, which summer residents also like to keep in their gardens.
The declared yield of Furor strawberries is just over one and a half kilograms.
Agricultural technology
This variety feels good on soils with neutral acidity, loamy or sandy loam. If the soil is heavy, it is recommended to mix river sand into it. Planting is carried out according to the dense two-line method - 20 cm between the bushes and about 50 cm between the rows. This strawberry will not tolerate strong crowding, therefore, if possible, it is even worth observing the distance between rows in the region of 60 cm, at least as experienced gardeners advise. Since the variety belongs to plants with a neutral light day, it is permissible to grow in greenhouses with winter heating and on the loggias of apartments.
If the culture is planted in April, and the first wave of peduncles is removed, then the crop can be harvested in early July. The very first flower stalks must be removed. There is a practice of using seedlings for propagation, then fruiting is avoided. The best method is called the use of the mother bush for subsequent breeding. It is advisable to make beds for harvest and for reproduction separately.
In the case of growing strawberries "Furor" in the greenhouse, the mustache is removed until the middle of summer, which increases the yield.
Top dressing for culture is mandatory, and very intensive. This is necessary to maintain good yields and the size of the berries. Top dressing is needed both foliar and basal - a full range of trace elements. For the winter period, strawberries are covered with a special cloth and mulched. The colder the climate of the strawberry growing area, the more thoroughly it is prepared for winter.
The Furor variety tolerates winter quite well both in the Moscow region and in Siberia. In the northern regions, in the presence of a large snow cover, the main thing is to prevent the plants from sagging under the cover in case of warming. As a heater, you should not use moisture-intensive coatings, and agro-fabric must be removed when warming. In the spring, a cold wind carries a danger to strawberries. It can dry out the plants, so you should cover them again.
If you follow these recommendations, you can achieve the declared indicators for picking berries from the bushes.
Advantages and disadvantages
The variety appeared relatively recently, but gardeners already note its advantages such as:
- very strong energy of growth and fruiting, flower stalks are formed instantly;
- good presentation - a pleasant shape and color, excellent taste, the fruits do not shrink;
- transportability and good keeping quality - the fruits retain their appearance and taste;
- variety of intensive type, productivity is very high;
- tolerates heat well and continues to form flower stalks and set berries, although many varieties barely survive in such weather, not to mention fruiting;
- resistance to harmful insects and common diseases.
Of course, like any other crop, the Furor strawberry variety has the following disadvantages:
- forms little whiskers, but this is a characteristic feature of all cultures of the neutral group; very intensive feeding will help, and if this does not give a result, then the strawberries are propagated by dividing the bush;
- flower stalks with berries are adjacent to the ground, which can provoke fruit rotting;
- the need for frequent and abundant fertilizing and watering, but this is again the specificity of all varieties of this type.
In general, reviews of gardeners about this culture are positive.The yield and attractive appearance of the fruit are noted by everyone. And those who grow strawberries for sale appreciate its presentation and good transportability. In the minuses, as noted above, they call problems with reproduction and the need to fertilize it intensively and water it abundantly.
