Strawberry "Polka" ("Polka"): variety description, cultivation features
Strawberries rightfully occupy a leading place among seasonal berries that are present in every garden plot. Today, summer residents and gardeners face a rather serious task of selecting the most successful crop variety among the available variety. Increasingly, the choice falls in favor of the Polka strawberry, which is endowed with a large number of unique characteristics, for which it is valued among lovers of juicy berries.
Variety Description
Each variety of garden strawberries has individual advantages and disadvantages, therefore, before acquiring a particular crop, you should familiarize yourself in detail with the characteristics of the variety and gardeners' reviews about it. It will not be difficult to get complete information about the strawberry "Polka" ("Polka"), since the plant has long been grown on private plots for personal use and on farm plantations on an industrial scale.
The variety owes its origin to the work of Dutch breeders, who crossed two plants (“Unduka”, “Sivetta”) to obtain a new crop. "Polka" has been successfully cultivated all over the world for several decades due to the presence of a lot of positive qualities that it adopted from mother cultures.As the long-term practice of breeding a variety in Russia shows, the plant demonstrates a stable yield with a fairly simple agricultural technique.
Strawberry bushes are of medium size - an adult plant does not stand out with sprawling shoots and has a small height. The foliage of the culture is painted in a rich green color, with small teeth along the edge. However, the variety blooms quite abundantly; in the flowering phase, the bushes form a large number of peduncles with white flowers. A distinctive feature of the plant is the absence of barren flowers, due to which berries are tied on each peduncle. In the ripening phase, the fruits of "Polka" have a scarlet color, upon reaching technical ripeness, the color changes to rich red. The shape of the berries is close to a shortened cone, the skin of the berries is thin, but strong.
The popularity of the culture is ensured by high palatability, ripe berries have an unobtrusive caramel flavor. The variety is not prone to the formation of voids in the core of the fruit. The mass of one fruit is about 50 grams, however, the weight of the berries will directly depend on the agrotechnical measures carried out by the gardener. A lot of tendrils form on the bushes, so regular pruning is a must for caring for plants, otherwise there is a risk of premature depletion of the culture.
The harvested crop lends itself perfectly to subsequent processing, so the berries of the variety are often used to make compotes and jams, in addition, strawberries retain their taste after freezing. In the process of heat treatment, "Polka" does not fall apart, does not lose color saturation, changing it to burgundy. Some craftsmen prefer to dry them to preserve the berries.
To have the most complete picture of the culture, you should consider the advantages that the variety has:
- the plant belongs to frost-resistant species, therefore, it retains its viability even in a harsh climate under covering material;
- the variety is unpretentious in care;
- the berry has a universal purpose, therefore it can be cultivated for personal or industrial purposes;
- the harvested crop tolerates transportation over long distances;
- "Shelf" is distinguished by immunity to many ailments, but it is worth refusing preventive measures;
- strawberries grow well both in open ground and in greenhouse conditions;
- The plant has a long fruiting period.
Culture also has some disadvantages:
- the fruiting of the plant decreases as it grows older;
- culture requires regular updating of the beds;
- with severe drought, the berries become smaller, and their taste deteriorates;
- bushes are prone to overgrowth, so they require regular care.
Landing
To ensure a high yield of Polka strawberries, you should follow the recommendations for planting a crop. This applies to the choice of plot for the beds. Strawberries will be able to bear fruit with juicy berries only in a well-lit place, so it is best to prepare a place for planting a crop on the south side of the site. It is worth giving preference to flat terrain, but a minimum angle of inclination is also allowed. If the plants are planted on the shaded side, the bushes will develop mustaches, however, flower buds will not be able to develop.
It is also worth paying attention to the north side of the site, it is important that the culture is reliably protected from wind and drafts by some kind of building or fence.
It is not worth planting garden strawberries in the lowlands, since excess moisture in the soil and cold air masses will constantly accumulate there. The level of groundwater should be no closer than 60 centimeters from the soil surface. As for the composition of the land, chernozems, loams or dark gray sandy soils remain in priority. In calcareous or waterlogged soil, the culture will develop poorly, in such cases it is worth forming ridges with strawberries on artificial elevations (high beds).
An important point is the correct selection of planting material. When buying seedlings of the Polka variety, you should focus on the following nuances:
- the root system will become an indicator of the health of the seedling, so it is important to buy a plant with a branched root, the length of which will be at least 7 centimeters;
- the rosette of the bush must consist of at least three leaves;
- the color of the foliage is important - it should be bright, without any inclusions or defects;
- the root neck should be 0.5 cm in diameter;
- plants must be properly packaged to avoid drying out, as well as confusion in the varietal assortment.
When choosing the optimal landing period for the Polka, it is worth stopping at the summer-autumn landing. Usually, rooting of seedlings is carried out in the last weeks of August or at the beginning of September. Such a time was not chosen by chance, it was during this period that it was still quite warm, there would be no strong heat that could harm a fragile plant.In addition to the optimal temperature value, it is important that strawberries planted at the end of summer, before the onset of cold weather, have time to give impetus to the formation of fruit buds, which will provide a good harvest of ripe berries next season.
For regions with a cold autumn, it is preferable to plant strawberries in early spring, for example, at the end of April. In the soil, the temperature of which will already be about + 10C, the plant will begin to actively grow and develop.
For autumn planting, it is worth taking care of the composition of the soil in the selected area in a month. If the work is postponed until the spring, preparation is carried out at the end of the summer. Regardless of the period chosen for rooting strawberry bushes, the preparatory work scheme will consist of similar work described below.
- Since the variety "Polka" refers to moisture-loving plants, the site must be cleaned of weeds and other vegetation. After that, the soil is dug up to a depth of about 30-40 centimeters. As the practice of cultivating a plant shows, the root system of bushes is able to deepen precisely to such a distance.
- Under digging it is necessary to apply fertilizer. For one square meter of beds, you will need about 6 kilograms of compost, 30 grams of potassium composition, about 100 grams of superphosphate.
- Immediately before rooting crops, the ground must be leveled by removing the crust that has formed on the surface.
- It is best to plant strawberries after radishes, carrots or legumes.
- From planting after peppers or tomatoes should refrain.
The variety is planted according to a two- or three-line scheme. This arrangement will greatly facilitate the further care of the plants. In addition, it will be easier to pick ripe berries.It is worth rooting bushes in increments of 30-35 centimeters and a distance between rows of at least 50 centimeters.
The landing scheme includes the sequential execution of the following works.
- With the help of a rope or cord, it will be possible to mark the future beds with garden strawberries. To determine the distance between cultures, you can prepare in advance any object, the length of which will be no more than 35 centimeters. Using it, you can quickly designate places for rooting bushes.
- It is better to perform work on a cloudy day or in the evening after sunset. This will allow crops to quickly adapt to a new place.
- The size of the hole should be 25x25 centimeters to allow the root system to freely settle in the ground.
- If the beds were not fertilized before planting, it is worth adding nutrients by mixing them thoroughly with the ground in order to avoid root burns.
- After that, the planting pits must be moistened and the seedling deepened, leaving the heart of the culture at the level of the soil. The earth must be compacted, excluding the formation of air layers.
- To check the correctness of planting, you can slightly pull the bush by the leaves, if it does not give in, then all the work has been done correctly and you can carry out another watering.
- The final stage of planting will be the mulching of the beds.
Care
For a good yield of the Polka variety, it is necessary to provide the plant with competent care. The main agrotechnical activities include the following types of work.
Watering
The culture endures drought, however, such conditions will have an extremely negative impact on the quality of berries - their number and mass will decrease, and sourness will appear in taste.To maximize the disclosure of all the advantages of the variety, moderately moist soil should be provided to the culture. During the extremely hot summer months, strawberries need to be watered daily.
As for seedlings that took root in autumn, they should be watered starting from April, and moisture should be introduced no more than once every seven days at the rate of 30 liters per 1 m2 of beds. With the advent of autumn, the volume and frequency of watering is gradually reduced.
Important periods of plant development in which regular moistening is necessary are the following:
- the time when the formation of the ovaries of culture occurs;
- fruit filling phase;
- in the second half of summer, when the plant will form flower buds.
A dangerous phenomenon for the culture is not only the moment when the strawberries dry, but also excessive moisture, which leads to rotting and death of the variety. Therefore, irrigation is best done with a hose, concentrating a jet of water in the aisle. Water for strawberries should not be cold, watering is recommended in the morning or evening.
As practice shows, good results are demonstrated by the arrangement at the drip irrigation site. This option will eliminate the exposure of the root system during the usual introduction of moisture, in addition, the liquid will be evenly distributed throughout the area.
Weeding and loosening the soil
Strawberries are very susceptible to weed growth in beds, so weeding the area is a must. Weed removal work must be done with great care so as not to damage the strawberry bushes. Between the rows, weeds are removed manually, and those pests that are already intertwined with strawberries must be cut with a pruner.It is worth temporarily abandoning the removal of weeds in the ovary formation phase.
Regular loosening of the earth will help maintain optimal air exchange in the soil, usually work is carried out shortly after watering the bushes. Loosening also helps retain moisture in the soil and removes weeds at the same time.
Mulching strawberry bushes
Sawdust, spruce branches or straw are perfect as a layer of mulch. Mulching allows you to retain moisture in the ground, reduce the number of weeds, and also avoid contamination of the crop when it comes into contact with the ground.
Introduction of fertilizers
Proper fertilizing has a positive effect on the taste of berries, ensures healthy development of the culture, and increases resistance to frost. The introduction of fertilizers is postponed until the arrival of spring. During this period, strawberries will need the following nutritional composition: 10 grams of potassium salt, 30 grams of superphosphate, 15 grams of ammonium nitrate. The variety responds well to the introduction of foliar feeding in the phase of ovary formation.
Organic is extremely useful for the variety. There are a number of recommendations regarding the introduction of natural fertilizers.
- "Polka" is fertilized with liquid compositions based on manure or bird droppings, in a ratio of 1: 10 and 1: 20. Only moist soil is fertilized, trying to avoid contact of the composition with foliage so as not to cause a burn.
- Positive results are demonstrated by fertilizing strawberries with leaf humus. Such a layer will become a nutrient, and will also act as a reliable protection for the bushes from frost.
- In autumn, strawberry bushes should be sprinkled with ash, this substance will have a positive effect on the development of the root system.
Before the onset of cold weather, a number of preparatory measures are taken to allow the culture to correctly move from the growth and fruiting phase to the dormant phase. At this time, pruning of old foliage, removal of dried fruits, inspection of strawberry ridges are carried out. The culture before wintering should be treated with compounds from insect pests and ailments. It also loosens the soil and removes weeds.
Variety "Polka" retains its viability at frosts down to -15C. If the winter turned out to be snowy, the culture will also endure more tangible temperature drops. But for this, the plant needs to be protected from the cold.
For this purpose, it is recommended to cover garden strawberries with a layer of dry grass or spruce branches. Additionally, you need to purchase a special covering material for garden plants.
Diseases and pests
The variety is immune to many diseases, but is prone to damage by verticillium. For prevention and treatment, the soil is treated with insecticides, and diseased bushes are sprayed with fungicidal compounds.
The culture can be attacked by the raspberry-strawberry weevil, to combat which the preparations "Aktellik" and "Karbofos" are used. Sometimes the culture is harmed by whiteflies and their larvae. For the destruction of insects, the composition "Karate" is used.
Reviews of gardeners
Throughout the history of the cultivation of the variety, strawberries have earned many positive responses from gardeners. As practice shows, the plant stands out for its resistance to frost, gives good yields of berries and is unpretentious in care, which together makes it possible to cultivate "Polka" not only in private gardens, but also on an industrial scale.
