How to grow Roxana strawberries?
Strawberries, which would be more correct to call garden strawberries, are a popular berry in our country. Its unique sweet taste is loved by everyone, both children and adults. It is not surprising that many owners of summer cottages or personal plots are trying to allocate at least a small corner for this culture.
When planting strawberries, every gardener dreams of big harvests and large fruits. However, it is not always possible to find the right variety. It can be moody and demanding to care for, or simply not adapt well to local conditions. You have to work hard to get a decent harvest.
In this article we will talk about the variety "Roxana", which was specially bred to please the owners with its fertility. We will also tell about the main features and explain how this strawberry should be planted and grown.
Variety Description
Compared to her many "sisters", "Roxanne" is quite young. This species was bred in Italy in the late 1990s. The first to test it in practice was the agricultural company New Fruits. "Roxana" was grown in the fields near the city of Cesena.
When the variety successfully passed all the tests, it went on free sale. It happened in 2001. Around the same time, this strawberry came to Russia. And despite the fact that it has been grown in our country for no more than seventeen years, local gardeners managed to appreciate the high quality of the variety, thanks to which it is now so popular.
What is this very quality? Let's figure it out. First, let's turn to the characteristics of garden strawberries.The variety can be attributed to late-ripening. The bushes of the plant, although vigorous, are compact, not sprawling, erect.
Leaf density is medium. The stems of the flowers grow quite long, and the flowers themselves are always on the same level with the leaves. By the way, in the first year after the start of fruiting, no more than two flowers are formed on one inflorescence, but the berries from them are large.
The shape of the berries themselves is cone-shaped, elongated. Their mass depends on the age of the culture. For example, in the first year, the weight of one fetus can reach 35 grams. In the following, it decreases to 22 grams, but the number of berries on one bush increases.
Strawberries have an appetizing bright red or dark red color. It depends on many factors: moisture level, amount of light, air temperature and proper care of the crop. And the glossy sheen complements the beautiful appearance of a ripe berry. The strawberry skin is smooth, and its pulp, in turn, has a medium density. It has a sweet dessert taste and a pronounced strawberry aroma.
Now about the benefits of the variety. As already mentioned, "Roxana" is distinguished by large crops, consisting of high quality fruits. One bush is able to give up to one and a half kilograms of berries. As a result, from 100 square meters you can collect a whole centner.
By the way, this species is able to bear fruit three times a year. It is often referred to as remontant varieties. This means that strawberries can grow not only in summer, but also in autumn, if it turned out to be warm.
Due to the high volume and quality of the crops, Roxana is often grown for production purposes. At the same time, it is easily transported without getting any damage. This fact, as well as excellent taste and appearance, made this strawberry a hot commodity in grocery stores. So, if you do not have the opportunity to grow this beautiful variety on your site, you can still enjoy its sweet taste.
Since we are talking about taste, it is worth noting that many people most often use this strawberry in its original fresh form. However, it often becomes the basis or filling for many dessert dishes and is able to decorate any table.
Another advantage of the variety - long shelf life. This applies to both berries after harvest and before it. The fruits are able to hang on the bush for about two weeks, without losing their presentation or taste. So, if you do not have time to pick berries in time, you should not worry. You have enough time left.
But "Roxanne" has one feature that can be treated differently. Sometimes the traditional oblong shape of the berries changes during the growth process. The cone seems to bifurcate, because of which the berry increases in width. Of course, this does not affect the taste in any way. Some gardeners are attracted to this appearance, while others prefer the berries to be the same as the selection.
Most of the fruits ripen at the same time. There are no problems with their collection, as they are easily accessible.
And last but not least, resistance to diseases. The variety demonstrates high resistance to diseases such as gray rot and powdery mildew. The same can be said about many pests.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about low temperatures. "Roxana" feels great in the southern regions of the country.She is able to endure winters in central Russia. But if these months turn out to be really harsh, you will have to put in a lot of effort to save your strawberries. About how to properly cover it for the winter, we will tell further.
Landing
Before you start planting a variety, you need to choose the most suitable period for this business. You can do this both in spring and autumn. There are no fundamental differences in the season. However, experienced gardeners recommend planting strawberries in the second half of August. According to them, this is an ideal period for the crop to adapt to climatic conditions and produce a quality harvest next year.
If you decide, according to tradition, to do this in the spring, then it is not necessary to wait for a specific moment. You can start planting after the snow melts, when the soil warms up to at least 15 degrees.
Then you need to choose a suitable place where "Roxana" can grow in comfortable conditions. The main thing is that the bed is well lit by sunlight. The soil should be loose, with high fertility and low acidity.
It is recommended to fertilize the ground two weeks before planting strawberries. For these purposes, great:
- humus;
- humus;
- complex mineral supplements.
The next step is choosing the most suitable weather. Strawberries should not be planted in the heat. It is better to wait a couple of days until it gets cooler. The best time for landing will be the evening of a warm day.
The process itself is quite simple. First, dig holes 15 centimeters deep. The distance between them should be about 33 centimeters, so that the bushes have enough space for proper development. Place the seedling in the hole, gently straightening its roots.Then fill the hole with earth and lightly compact it.
It is important to note that at first, seedlings need to be watered regularly as the top layer of the earth dries. But you need to do this with strictly settled warm water.
Care
If you believe the gardeners who have been growing Roxana for many years, the variety is not picky about care. He will be satisfied with the standard procedures that most cultures require.
When the seedlings grow up, the frequency of watering can be reduced. It is better to do this in the early morning or evening, so that the sun's rays do not harm the stems and leaves. At least 10 liters of water should go per square meter of the site. Before flowering, it is better to water the strawberries with a drip method, and when flowering and fruit formation begin, under the root, preventing moisture from getting on the flowers or berries.
The next important step is loosening. It should be done as often as possible. Preferably after each watering. This will protect the culture from the effects of intrusive weeds. Each bush should be spudded from all sides, while not covering their cores with earth. You should also be very careful. Strawberry roots are too close to the surface and can be easily damaged.
By the way, experienced gardeners plant mustard between the rows of strawberries, which helps to get rid of weeds and pests.
Do not forget about regular feeding. "Roxana" needs nitrogen substances for almost the entire period of development. This need is especially acute in the spring, at the beginning of the growing season.
Nitrogen mixtures can be applied in different ways, scattering in dry form or stirring in water. In the second case, dilute 20 grams of ammonium nitrate in 10 liters of water and pour plenty of liquid over the beds.You can always use organic products as well. Strawberries take them very well.
An integral part of the care of "Roxana" is pruning. This should be done in the spring, when the snow melts. First, get rid of last year's dead stems. When the earth dries, remove dry fallen leaves from the beds. It is not necessary to be careful. The main thing is that the core of the bush and green leaves remain intact. All removed fragments must be burned, because pests or disease spreaders could winter in them.
Strawberries can tolerate light frosts with enough snow. But you never know what kind of winter this time will be, especially in the Central region of Russia. Therefore, the culture should be well covered. For these purposes, wide branches of coniferous trees or special agrofibre are suitable. The best option is a greenhouse in which "Roxana" can grow all year round.
Prevention is an important part of care. Yes, "Roxana" has a good resistance to many diseases and pests, but it is still able to get infected. For example, anthracnose, to which the variety is less resistant. And as you know, the disease is easier to prevent than to cure.
It is possible to carry out preventive spraying from early spring and throughout the season. To combat pathogens, biological preparations such as Fitosporin or Phytocid should be used. Against pests such as aphids or strawberry mites, use insecticides, among which Aktofit or Aktellik are noted. Preparations containing copper will help to cope with fungi. But they should be used with extreme caution.
Reviews
Many gardeners and gardeners admit that they planted Roxana for the first time for the experiment.Few hoped for a positive result. But it turned out that this variety can surprise. A year later, most of them began to propagate the culture on their site, agitating their "colleagues" to do the same.
According to them, this strawberry has many uses in cooking, which cannot but please the housewives. Most often prepared from these berries:
- compotes and fruit drinks;
- ice cream, yoghurts and cocktails;
- preserves and jams;
- pies, cakes and dumplings;
- other desserts;
- spirits and liqueurs.
Strawberries can also be crushed and frozen for a long time.
But not all gardeners can boast of the large quality crops that Roxana is famous for. There may be several reasons. For example, increased density of landings.
The problem may also be improper watering or excessive feeding. Do not ignore the rules, hoping for a favorable outcome. Strawberries need pruning, loosening and weeding. And if you decide to transplant or plant bushes, you need to do this in a timely manner so as not to harm the culture.
If you follow all the rules described, "Roxana" will delight you and your entire family with juicy fragrant berries for many years.
