The biggest strawberry in the world
Strawberries are an amazingly tasty and healthy berry. It is rich in vitamins and has a low calorie content, so it is included in many diets. Usually, the weight of fruits varies between 20-60 g, and the weight of large specimens does not exceed 60-120 g. A set of berries of this size is already considered a very good result.
History of the berry
Archaeologists say that strawberries have been known since the Neolithic. Also, references to it were found in Greek writings. It came to Europe much later, after the discovery of America by Europeans. Since about 1970, strawberries began their victorious journey from France to other countries. According to historical data, strawberries appeared in Russia thanks to the gardener of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, who treated the little prince Peter Alekseevich with an unusual berry.
Large varieties of strawberries
In recent years, large-fruited varieties of strawberries have been popular with gardeners. In other words, they are called giants and centenarians. The good thing is that these varieties do an excellent job with diseases and pests, do not require complex care. Their only drawback is that you have to spend money on numerous top dressings.
These are varieties such as:
- "Kiss-Nellis" (50-100 grams, some specimens reach 170 grams);
- "Kamrad Winner" (40-100 grams);
- "Giant of Jorney" (35-100 grams);
- "Tudla" (up to 100 grams);
- "Primella" (65-100 grams);
- "Juan" (35-100 grams);
- "Humi Grande" (35-120 grams);
- "Lord" (35-110 grams);
- "Great Britain" (average 120 grams);
- "Gigantella-Maxima" (70-120 grams);
- "Tsunaki" (up to 110-120 grams);
- "Chamora Turusi" (80-150 grams);
- "Ottawa" (50-100 grams);
- "Kebot" (80-110 grams).
As a rule, the largest berries of giant varieties are harvested at the beginning of fruiting, then their mass gradually decreases. The leaves of strawberries of large varieties are larger than those of ordinary ones, the bushes themselves are powerful, up to 60 cm high. The taste of the berries ranges from sweet and sour to sweet. Fruit color is traditional: red, dark red, dark cherry. Also, most varieties, subject to full feeding, are able to give a rich harvest without transplants for 5-8 years.
Recorded records in the Guinness book
More recently, the largest strawberry was recorded as a specimen grown in the American city of Rolkeston, Kent. After weighing, it turned out that the berry weighs 231 g. At the same time, according to its owner, the strawberries were very sour and watery. But, thanks to its impressive size, this did not prevent her from taking her honorary page in the book of records.
After 32 years, the dimensional record of a strawberry berry was again recorded. The largest strawberry in the world was grown by farmer Koji Nakao from the Japanese city of Fukuoka. When weighed, the record berry was 250 grams, its spatial dimensions were 8 and 12 cm in different directions, and the maximum circumference diameter of the miracle berry was 30 cm. After repeated measurements, this specimen was entered in the Guinness Book of Records. According to the farmer's daughter, who was lucky enough to taste the giant berry, it was very sweet and tasty.
What causes mutation?
According to scientists, such mutational processes can occur for various reasons.
Consider the two most popular versions:
- the incredibly fast growth of strawberries could provoke unexpected frosts;
- the berries simply grew together, forming one huge one.
In the case of a record copy, there is a high probability of a merger of two factors: the onset of frost could provoke the connection of several berries. In the future, the culture continues to splice automatically.
