How to feed strawberries in the spring and how to do it right?
Spring can be safely called a creative time of the year for gardeners and gardeners. It is during this period that people plan future plantings, pick up a variety of flowers and varieties of vegetables. In spring, the land is still completely clean - it does not have time to grow weeds, but perennial fruit and berry crops are already beginning to slowly awaken. One of them is everyone's favorite strawberry.
At the very beginning of the season, it must be fed, so that later it will give large and juicy berries.
The need and types of spring top dressing
Feeding strawberries in the spring is a necessary procedure that contributes to a rich harvest. The required nutritional components assist this culture in growth and bud formation. However, it is important not to overdo it when applying top dressing. This can adversely affect the growth and development of the bush. An excess of fertilizer will provoke too active growth of the bush itself, but it will not affect the development of fruits and ovaries.
There are two main options for feeding strawberries in the spring season.
- Root. Root methods involve adding fertilizer directly into the soil, as close to the roots as possible. This option is used very often. At the same time, nutrients should be poured out at a minimum distance from the bush and buried to a depth of about 9 cm.And also top dressing is permissible to make at the very root of the strawberry. In the above case, the top layer of soil should be no more than 2 cm. For initial top dressing, which is done when growing greenery, as well as during the laying of buds, it is permissible to use ordinary chicken manure. An alternative to litter will be manure.
- Foliar. When using foliar top dressing, nutrients can be supplied not only through the root system, but also through the leaves. A similar method of feeding strawberries is a simple spraying. They can process plants using both organics and minerals.
How to fertilize the plant after winter?
With the advent of spring, many summer residents are wondering how exactly strawberries can be fertilized so that in the future it will give a large and healthy harvest. It is worth considering what means are suitable for carrying out such procedures.
Mineral components
Today, three nitrogen-containing fertilizers are most often found on store shelves, which are inexpensive and have a modest consumption.
Urea
This popular fertilizer contains the largest percentage of nitrogen - 46%. The remaining composition of urea is occupied by oxygen, hydrogen, carbon. A similar type of fertilizer, in contact with air, forms ammonia, which quickly evaporates. That is why urea must either be embedded in the ground or brought in in the form of a mixture. The specified fertilizer is characterized by a slightly acidic reaction, which is rather close to neutral, which is why it is allowed to apply to it in the case of any type of soil.
Ammonium nitrate
This fertilizer is a salt of nitric acid, in the content of which there is 35% nitrogen.The main disadvantage of this tool lies in the fact that it significantly increases the level of soil acidity. For this reason, it is permissible to make it together with special dolomite flour. However, the same tool is great in the fight against a variety of plant diseases.
Watering the ground and leaves with a solution of ammonium nitrate, you can easily say goodbye to fungi.
Nitroammophoska
This fertilizer is complex. It contains the three most important elements - phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Many manufacturers today produce a variety of brands of this mixture, which differ from each other in the specific ratio of trace elements available. The minus of nitroammophoska lies in the fact that it is permissible to transfer it to the spring season only if earlier (in autumn) the plantings were not fed with superphosphate or potassium salt.
How and in what volume it is necessary to add mineral fertilizers is usually indicated on the packaging. However, experts recommend adding a little less of these components, since, for example, excess nitrogen can accumulate in strawberry leaves, and then in the berries themselves in the form of nitrates. Nitrates do not have a detrimental effect on human health, but in some circumstances they can become poisonous in the body. As a rule, this occurs in case of a decrease in the level of acidity, with gastritis and neglect of hygiene. Babies and the elderly are more sensitive to nitrates. For this reason, old people and children are advised to eat fruits and fruit juices that have been grown without the use of various chemicals.
organic
If you do not want to use chemical mineral fertilizers, then you should turn to organic products.These include several options.
Mullein
Otherwise, such fertilizer is called manure. From it you can prepare a good nitrogen supplement. Mullein is littered and non-littered. In the spring, nitrogen supplementation is especially necessary, so it is best to give preference to bedless mullein, which is pure manure with a nitrogen content of 60-70%.
In this case, it is permissible to use ordinary cow cakes (they can be found in places where cows usually graze).
bird droppings
Very often, people turn to bird droppings to feed strawberries. Such a tool is rightfully recognized as the most effective organic fertilizer. It contains a very high content of nutrients (many times more than in other formulations). The litter contains components such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other necessary elements. You can prepare such a tool yourself or buy it in a store, but dried products are usually found on the shelves. In addition, it may not be chicken droppings at all, but humus.
Humus
Many summer residents turn to this fertilizer. It is a rotted waste of both animal and vegetable origin. Often, humus is called ordinary manure, which has lain down for about 1-2 years. However, this category should also include compost, and rotten bedding, and even a layer of rotten foliage lying under the trees.
Such fertilizers contain an impressive percentage of nitrogen.
wood ash
It is a fertilizer that makes no sense to add in the spring without backing up with nitrogen fertilizing (for this you can use urea, mullein or bird droppings).The composition of wood ash contains all the trace elements that strawberries require, only nitrogen is missing. If applied at the same time with nitrogen containing agents, an undesirable reaction may occur. Ash is alkali, and nitrogen in the company with it becomes ammonia and evaporates. In order to get ashes, it is permissible not only to burn firewood, but also a variety of vegetation residues. For example, it can be dried grass, tops or leaves from last year.
Folk remedies
Many gardeners refuse to use organic or mineral fertilizers in favor of old-fashioned ways, in which various folk remedies are used. It is worth considering the most popular of them.
- Yeast. They contribute to the rapid decomposition of organic matter in the soil, that is, they change its form, which becomes available for plant nutrition. In addition, this folk remedy has a positive effect on the formation of roots. As you know, the stronger the roots, the more impressive the bush will be, and the fruits on it will grow large. Yeast needs to be introduced only into fairly warm soil, since the ideal temperature for their decomposition is +20 degrees. While the yeast is fermenting, a lot of calcium and potassium are absorbed from the ground, which is why immediately after treatment with a yeast composition, it is necessary to turn to the application of ash top dressing.
- Nettle. A good remedy is an infusion of nettle. Many gardeners and gardeners also turn to such a folk remedy. Thanks to this tool, the yield of strawberries is significantly increased. Nettle tincture contains a sufficient amount of useful substances that can make the plant stronger and healthier.
- Serum. It is also permissible to refer to the so-called fermented milk supplement, in which whey is used. This tool will not only increase the yield of strawberries, but will also contribute to the healthy development of the plant. Often, serum is applied along with humus or ash in order to increase the effect. Such dressings also boast healing and preventive properties.
Garden "chemistry"
Often, gardeners turn to affordable and widespread garden "chemistry", which can be purchased at any pharmacy. Such funds are very popular, as they are highly effective.
- Ammonia. Few people know, but top dressing of strawberries in the spring can also be done using ammonia. You can find it in any pharmacy. Ammonia is a highly effective remedy, since it contains such a nitrogen compound as ammonia. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that ammonia has a pungent odor that will drive away various pests from strawberries. And also this affordable tool has a disinfectant effect and literally destroys fungi, which are often located on strawberry leaves.
- Iodine. This is a component that is found in many components of wildlife. It is found in water, in the air, and in the earth, but in small quantities. There is this component in all living organisms, plants are no exception. Many gardeners also purchase such a product as alcohol-containing iodine, which can be found in almost any pharmacy. It is generally accepted that this antiseptic effectively protects plants from various diseases, and after it enters the soil, it becomes a catalyst for nitrogen metabolism.
- Boric acid. With this top dressing, strawberry bushes will not only give a richer harvest, but will also become resistant to bad weather conditions. Turning to boric acid, you can ensure that strawberries grow denser and sweeter, but at the same time they will not crack from moisture. This top dressing works most effectively in conditions of peat and sod-podzolic lands.
How to feed young and adult bushes?
A berry that was planted last year does not require top dressing in the spring, if the required amount of organic and mineral fertilizers was added to the ground during planting. If there are any doubts about the literacy of fertilizing last year, then it is better to turn to suitable means for this. For example, it is permissible to add chicken manure or sodium sulfate solution. Fertilizers must be applied directly to the soil, previously cleared of any litter. If you want to buy a tool in a store, then you should select it in accordance with the type of soil that is available on the site. In addition, it is very important to study in detail the instructions for using the product, which is usually present on the package.
As for adult strawberries, they need regular feeding, as the soil becomes poorer over time. Of course, it is permissible not to engage in such gardening work, so as not to encounter unnecessary troubles, but in such conditions it makes no sense to expect a lush harvest. If you still want to get juicy and sweet fruits as a result, then you will need to fertilize the culture several times, namely:
- 1 time - after the formation of "starting" 2-3 leaves;
- 2 times - in the course of tying berries.
Important! Upon reaching 2 or 4 years, it is advisable to “feed” strawberries in the spring with organic or mineral products. And for the 3rd year of landing, only mineral ones should be used.
Rules and stages of fertilization
There are no specific dates for fertilizing - it all depends on the climate. But if possible, then it is worth starting to fertilize plantings early. If the summer cottage is located far from the city of residence of the owners, then it is possible to visit it at the end of winter. In such a situation, it is permissible to start feeding when there is still snow. The pellets are scattered over the melted snow. They will dissolve in the aquatic environment and go to the roots through the soil. Ideally, mineral options or ash are suitable.
If it is possible to visit the site only in conditions of dry land, then fertilizers must be added simultaneously with loosening. They are also scattered on the beds and mixed with the ground. Next, watering is done. Otherwise, it is allowed to use initially liquid top dressing. Top dressing of strawberries is carried out in such basic stages as:
- spring fertilization is carried out;
- fertilizer is made after harvest;
- fertilizer is applied in summer or autumn.
Of course, this plan is not the only correct one. In any case, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the plant that is planted on the site. It is worth remembering that in the event of a glut of strawberries in the spring, the harvest will not be rich, but modest. An excessive amount of top dressing will have a beneficial effect on the growth of the green part of the bush, and may even lead to the fact that it gets sick. This is due to the fact that planting will have to "compete" with trace elements. In this case, the immunity of strawberries will decrease.
The feeding scheme looks something like this:
- early spring - the beds are cleaned of excess leaves, after which all the bushes are watered with a fertilizer in a liquid consistency;
- budding period - strawberries must be fertilized 2 times, pausing a week;
- from July to August - when the crop is already harvested, you will need to fertilize the plant and remove old leaves;
- September - top dressing will be needed to prepare for the cold season.
During flowering, strawberries still need proper nutrition. When the first sweet fruits appear, the plant especially needs potassium. After the formation of berries, it is necessary to pour or pour wood ash between the rows - 1 handful under a bush or 0.5 of a liquid composition. To prepare a suitable liquid solution, you will need to take 2 cups of wood ash, and then insist them in boiling water for at least 3 hours. After that, the composition should be poured with 10 liters of warm water. Other mineral products must be diluted in accordance with the instructions. Experiments should not be carried out so as not to harm the plantings.
The berry bears fruit within 2-3 weeks in accordance with its specific variety. During this period, it is also necessary to fertilize the plant. According to experts, mullein diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 15 is considered a universal fertilizer. A remedy similar in composition will be obtained if chicken manure is added in a ratio of 1: 10 rather than manure. It is permissible to use fertilizers that were used in early spring, but it is recommended to alternate them.
When the crop is harvested, you need to loosen, water and fertilize the bushes. At these moments, rhizomes, a green layer grow especially actively, and buds are laid for the coming season. This year you will need to mow the leaves of the bushes.It is best to do this at the end of fruiting - do not waste time in vain. Otherwise, the plant simply will not be able to "gain" strength for the season.
Common mistakes
It is worth considering some of the most common mistakes that gardeners make when feeding strawberries.
Among them are the following:
- apply too much or too little fertilizer;
- root dressings in the form of organic additives are placed under the stem, while in contact with the leaves;
- they fertilize strawberries with special nitrogenous agents when the temperature in the yard is less than +15 degrees.
Important! You should try not to encounter such omissions, otherwise you will not be able to achieve a good harvest. In addition, you should try not to experiment and follow the instructions if purchased top dressing is used.
Helpful Hints
It is worth following a few tips from experienced gardeners.
- If the planted plants have become victims of the fungus, then you can turn to special preparations, which contain a high content of copper. It can be funds such as "Topaz" or "Fundazol". But we must not forget that caring for plants with these compounds is harmful to human health.
- Do not plant strawberry seedlings with leaves. So that large and overgrown leaves do not begin to dry out the plant, they must be removed. You can leave only the 2 youngest leaves.
- Of course, everyone wants to grow strawberries without resorting to chemicals. However, this plant simply cannot do without pest control. But it should be borne in mind that processing is permissible only after the completion of the collection of fruits, and also before flowering begins.
- If for a long time only organic fertilizers have been used to feed strawberry bushes, then it is better not to use chemical fertilizers.
- It costs a little to improve the land before using organic top dressing. Active microorganisms can be very useful here.
