Wasps eat strawberries: causes and methods of struggle
In most cases, a person grows strawberries, like other cultivated plants, for himself, and is not ready to share the harvest with different biological species. If insects or other pests appear that have their eyes on the harvest of berries, the gardener will fight them in every way, and after all, a large number of wasps that eat strawberries are also a danger to households, since even one bite is very painful, and multiple bites can lead to critical condition.
Wasps do not eat strawberries out of evil - they just need to eat something, but the gardener should not refuse his favorite berry because it was attacked by potentially dangerous pests! It remains to figure out how to get rid of uninvited guests.
Prevention
It is most reasonable, of course, to act proactively - to create conditions in the summer cottage in which wasps do not even think of creating a hive. Of course, single individuals can fly from afar, but if there is no hive in your own yard and neighbors, such “visiting visits” will not take on a mass character.
To protect yourself from new "residents", follow four simple steps.
- Of course, wasps like strawberries, but its season is very fleeting, so they definitely do not settle anywhere with a main focus on strawberries. At the same time, they, like any other living organism, choose a location for settlement, taking into account closely located food supplies, which means that you just need not to lure insects. You should not make unwitting baits for them in the form of sweets left in the open air - of course, one ice cream is not enough for a whole hive, even if you don’t eat it, however, the scout can see stocks of other wasp food on the site, and his ice cream just attracted by the smell.
- Wasps, like any other biological species, prefer to settle in secluded places where no one will disturb them. Slots and other openings in the walls, floor or ceiling are the best place to breed insects, so a good repair will be an excellent preventive measure.
- Wasps can be easily etched. If insects eat strawberries, then no one, of course, will water the berries with poison, but you can pre-treat with repellent chemicals those places where the appearance of wasp hives seems likely.
- You can even tritely deceive insects by pretending that there is already another hive in this area. These creatures understand that competition for food will not benefit anyone, so they never settle next to another hornet's nest. Agricultural stores sell special imitators that allow you to create the illusion that there is nothing for the “new” wasps to catch here.
By the way, wasps tend to return to places where they have already settled before, therefore all the rules described should be especially observed where they managed to get rid of the previous nest.
How to fight?
If the prevention was not carried out in a timely manner, and a significant number of wasps around the strawberries are observed, then there is a nest somewhere nearby, and its detection is only a matter of time. The fight against wasps requires an integrated approach - here you can’t limit yourself to just killing insects (you won’t kill everyone) or destroying the hive (angry residents will probably try to teach the offender a lesson). Unfortunately, it’s also not possible to simply scare the wasps away from the berries, because spraying poison on them means spoiling the crop, and the nest will not go anywhere.
First you need to try to reduce the population at least a little - this can make the task of destroying the hive somewhat easier by reducing the number of its defenders. If there are a lot of winged guests, one or even several traps should be made for them. The easiest way is to give the insects a treat flavored with a suitable insecticide.
Chopped gourds of sweet varieties or regular jam are often used as bait.
Alternative option - a bottle with a cut off neck, which is turned over and inserted back so that the funnel is wide, but with a narrow exit, which is also lubricated with sunflower oil. It is almost impossible for a wasp to get out of such a trap, it remains only to lure it there - for this, something with a strong sweet smell, for example, honey, is poured into the lower part.
When there are too many living wasps in the bottle, this population can be destroyed by simply pouring water through the neck - such insects do not know how to swim at all, and immediately drown.
When measures to reduce individual individuals are taken, you can take directly to the nest. Remember that this pest is one of the few that can give a person a worthy rebuff, so you should take care of the most complete suit made of a material that is not inferior in density to jeans. The possibilities of wasps should not be neglected, therefore it is unacceptable to leave open areas of the skin, even the face must be covered with a special mesh. Since the enemy is very small and nimble, even in such conditions he can get to his offender, so antiallergic drugs must be at hand. It is better to attack the hive with a partner.
There are two tactics for destroying the nest, which depend on the time of day. During the day, most wasps fly away to collect pollen, leaving only a few guards to guard the hive, so you can destroy the lair quickly and relatively easily, but when they return, homeless insects will destroy everything in their path, so this method is good only for cottages.
If the personal plot is your permanent home and you have nowhere to go from it, it is better not to rely on traps and destroy most of the colony along with the nest - for this you should act at night, especially since at such a time the insects are quite lethargic. However, a too self-confident owner of the site can still wake them up, but then he will definitely not be good.
In spring or autumn, in principle, too many individuals cannot live in a hive, therefore at such a time the task is quite simple - you need to quickly remove the hive and just throw it somewhere far away, then the wasps, even finding it, will no longer live in it.
However, wasps eat strawberries in the summer - just when it is in season, and therefore you cannot do without full-fledged equipment for your own protection.
It is better not to throw away the nest in the summer, but to destroy it. For this, three different groups of funds are used.
- Water. Ordinary water is the best solution for all cases where the nest is easily accessible - it is available in any area and is inexpensive, and most importantly, it is very effective. When they enter the water, the wasps immediately drown, and their house begins to dissolve on its own. The method is practically inapplicable in a situation where the hive is located in a hard-to-reach place, and it is impossible to pour water abundantly due to the fact that it is in the house. In all other respects, the hive, preferably at night, is quickly removed and simply thrown into a bucket of water.
- Any improvised caustic liquids - from gasoline to bleach. Such substances can harm an insect, even just by touching it, which means that it will not be easy for the wasp to escape from it. But there is one huge minus - the insect will not die immediately, but will devote the last minutes of its life to revenge. To minimize the likelihood of a counterattack, the hive is first placed in a tight bag so that only a relatively narrow exit remains from it, and only then the existing poison is actively worked on this exit.
- Chemical means from wasps. There are also special insecticides, whose action is directed specifically at these insects. Manufacturers take into account the fact that it is desirable to achieve victory in such a fight as soon as possible, because such a tool usually acts almost instantly, killing all the individuals that it gets to. Good samples even have a fixing effect - they remain on the treated surface for a long time and discourage wasps from returning to their old place. The only disadvantage of this option is the cost - both money and time to find a good tool.
Tactics for hard-to-reach places
It also happens that a hornet's nest is located in your house, but it is problematic to get to it - insects have found a really secluded gap where it simply will not work to climb without the risk of being bitten. In this situation, one should act on the contrary - since a person cannot get in there, then let the insects not be able to get out of there. At night, when all the residents are in place, you need to try to close up all the exits - boards, sealant, cement will fit for this. It is possible that some way out after the first time will go unnoticed, but over time, the owner of the house will still find it and be able to eliminate the defect.
