The best green manure for strawberries

The best green manure for strawberries

All gardeners tirelessly care about increasing yields. It is possible to achieve this result through the use of special fertilizers and pesticides, but the consequences are sad. There is an alternative - the use of green manure, however, they need to be understood.

Peculiarities

The fertility of garden strawberries is determined to a large extent by the characteristics of the land in which they grow. Green manure in spring and autumn allows you to increase these characteristics and further increase the amount of the crop, improve its quality. Typical siderates are annuals, extremely rare perennials.

Botanically, cultures can belong to different families, however, they have in common that all the best siderates for strawberries are rapidly accumulating green mass. As a result of the use of carefully selected crops, it is possible to improve the structure of the earth and saturate it with useful substances, further suppressing the development of weeds.

Featured Crops

To improve the land for the subsequent cultivation of strawberries, the following are suitable:

  • rape;
  • peas;
  • dill;
  • buckwheat;
  • phacelia;
  • mustard and some other types.

Planting is possible at any time during the growing season. However, it is in the case when it is planned to grow strawberries that agronomists have their own wishes. They believe that it is preferable to sow preparatory plants in early spring or autumn. Regardless of the specific period, the selection of green manure is critical. Each species is planted in a strictly allotted time.

If it is planned not only to improve the structure of the soil, but also to feed it, normally developed plants are mowed. Then they need to be buried in the ground. There, the green mass naturally rots.

This serves as a powerful stimulus for biological processes, improves the quality of aeration and water penetration.

A more radical version of organic farming rejects even digging the earth, while the beveled green manure is laid out in the aisles and mulched.

What is the best plant to plant?

In spring, buckwheat is one of the main candidates. Its advantage is the shortened growing season. At the same time, the plant manages to form a root system up to 50 cm long. After buckwheat, the earth will become loose, acidity will decrease. The composition of the soil will be more phosphorus, potassium. The concentration of useful organic components will also increase.

Instead of buckwheat, you can grow oilseed radish. It significantly increases the concentration of nitrogen in the earth and destroys nematodes. Where radishes are planted, there is minimal risk of weeds, even as stubborn as wheatgrass. All weeds are simply suppressed by the accelerated development of culture. Mustard, rapeseed and colza are capable of replacing radish in this regard, but these are already winter green manure planted in autumn or, in extreme cases, in August.

From the legume family, lupine is attractive. Its root complex can form symbiosis with nodule microbes. As a result, the accumulation of nitrogen can reach 200 kg per 1 ha. Importantly, the lupine root has a length of up to 2 m. Thanks to it, nutrients come from the lower earth layers to the upper ones. Lupine is planted in the first days of March.

It is necessary to close up the green mass into the soil at the moment when the pods fold.If you grow several lupine bushes at once, you can significantly improve the appearance of the territory. Lupine blooms very beautifully. Other spring green manures are:

  • dill;
  • calendula;
  • garlic;
  • marigold;
  • spinach;
  • kosmeya.

Siderata for autumn and late summer

If sowing is planned not in the summer, but in the autumn months, it is required to lay the seeds superficially, covering them with mulch. One of the main plants used in this mode is mustard. This culture contributes to the saturation of the earth with potassium and phosphorus (and not just saturation, but in a form available to other plants). It is noted that after mustard on the site, the risk of damage to plantings by fusarium, wireworm, pathological fungi, scab, late blight and rhizoctaniosis is minimal. Rapeseed can only be planted in August, and this is the deadline.

Under the influence of rapeseed:

  • the fertility of the earth increases;
  • the presence of phosphorus, sulfur is increasing;
  • the entry of organic components increases;
  • the danger of weeds and microscopic fungi is reduced.

Helpful Hints

Cereals such as oats, rye, vetch are very useful. All three crops help to increase the concentration of the main mineral components of the fertile land. Rye effectively suppresses weeds, eliminates nematodes and fungi. Where it grows, the root complex loosens the earth. You can sow vetch and oats together, which contribute to the effective saturation of the earth with useful substances.

In order for green manure to give the optimal effect, their plantings alternate. But in some cases, a mixture of heterogeneous seeds is used. In spring, auxiliary plants are planted close to the holes, which will soon become the location of strawberries.

You can not mow "comrades-in-arms" immediately after entering in full growth.These crops, thanks to accelerated development, will become effective protection from cold piercing winds and from the scorching sun.

Tops are cut at the beginning of flowering. The resulting green mass is used as mulch. You can not bury it very deep, because the supply of oxygen is critical. If it is broken, the tops will not be able to systematically turn into fertilizer. Important: in the fall, only winter crops are allowed to be planted, which will definitely survive until spring.

Beans and peas are planted in the area where they plan to grow strawberries only in spring. Such plants become an attractive substitute for manure. Lupine, a combination of oats and vetch can be planted from 1 to 10 March. As soon as the early beans appear, you need to chop the plant and apply it as a mulch.

On exceptionally poor soil, it is worth growing green manure for a whole year to saturate the earth properly, and only then start cultivating strawberries.

      To create a shadow over strawberry beds, it is best to use cosmea and phacelia. Potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers are unacceptable as siderates and strawberry precursors. Fusarium wilt, a dangerous disease, can pass from all these crops to strawberries. This type of fungus provokes rotting of the root complex. A pathological organism can survive 10 years in the ground, and if it infects a plant, it invariably dies.

      Usually, the correct use of green manure allows you to improve the land for 4-6 years. When this period has passed, the improvement of the land must be repeated anew. Important: do not assume that any one plant is able to complete all the tasks. When selecting a species or formulating a mixture, the required purpose, the type of soil and its chemical composition are taken into account. It is necessary to take into account which substances are missing.
