Why strawberries do not give a mustache and what to do?
The juicy and sweet taste of strawberries makes them a "welcome guest" both in country garden plots and in the fields of farms. However, obtaining a good harvest of this berry is impossible without taking into account the many nuances of agricultural technology, including the proper reproduction of plants. Often new bushes are obtained with the help of the so-called mustache - long and thin leafless shoots that grow growing strawberry bushes. Therefore, it is worthwhile to figure out in which cases strawberries may not give a mustache, and also to understand what needs to be done in such situations.
Reasons for the disappearance of the mustache
There are several possible reasons why mustaches do not grow on garden strawberry bushes. The most common are the following:
- the variety does not give a mustache in principle;
- the plant is deficient in nutrients.
In turn, the lack of strength in the strawberry bush can be caused by the following reasons:
- abundant flowering and fruiting;
- disease;
- pest invasion;
- soil depletion;
- the old age of the bush.
Thus, it is necessary to separate the cases when strawberries do not let the whiskers in principle due to the characteristics of the variety, and the situations when last season the same variety gave a lot of whiskers, and this year the vegetative shoots do not grow.
In the first case, no special action needs to be taken, while in the second case, the disappearance of the mustache may be evidence of serious problems that need to be urgently addressed so as not to lose the crop.
Reproduction with whiskers
Consider the features of agricultural technology when propagating strawberries with a mustache.The most important rule to remember is that for each individual bush you will have to choose whether it will be used for propagation or for harvesting this season. Even the most healthy bush of garden strawberries does not have enough strength to fully form both mustaches and fruits. At best, small and not very juicy berries will grow on it.
That's why for reproduction, you need to choose the strongest bushes. At the same time, in the first year of plant life, the mustache must be cut off from all growing bushes. First, biennials and three-year-olds are much more "yielding" in terms of whisker growth than annuals. Secondly, in the first season, all bushes should be allowed to bear fruit in order to select the most suitable for subsequent reproduction. At the end of the season, those bushes that gave the largest berries are planted in a separate area, which is called a mother liquor.
Next year in the mother liquor, it is important to carefully monitor the condition of the bushes. First of all, you need to cut the flowers immediately after they appear. Only strawberries that do not waste energy on flowering give a sufficient number of strong shoots. The mustache itself also needs to be subjected to selection - each let-down mustache takes a lot of strength from the plant. Therefore, all weak or damaged whiskers must be immediately removed (cut off or cut off), leaving only the most promising ones.
When the mustache takes root and gives a "socket", it is not necessary to cut it off. It is better to just slightly deepen the roots of the resulting bush. In the future, care for the outlet is carried out in the same way as for ordinary seedlings. There is another method of mustache propagation, when fresh rosettes are immediately separated from the mother plant and transplanted into separate pots (or peat cups) for seedlings.
If the disappearance of the mustache is due to disease or the presence of pests, more specific symptoms will appear sooner or later. As soon as it is possible to make a "diagnosis", it will be necessary to immediately begin the treatment of the affected bushes. If the disappearance of the shoots is accompanied only by the general lethargy of the plant, then the strawberries lack nutrients. In this case, it is necessary to carry out top dressing with complex fertilizers, ash or manure.
If the mustache has stopped growing due to old age (for most varieties, this moment comes after eight years of life), then it will not be possible to restore their growth.
Varieties without whiskers
Many varieties of remontant strawberries (the so-called breeds that yield more than 1 crop per season) in principle do not form a mustache. The most famous strawberry varieties that do not give a mustache:
- "Ada";
- "Ali Baba";
- "Albion";
- "Baron Solemacher";
- "Brighton";
- "Bolero";
- "Vima Rina";
- "Mount Everest";
- "Yellow Miracle";
- "Geneva";
- "Kent";
- "Yoke";
- "Royal visit";
- "Crimean repair";
- "Mara de Bois";
- "Ruyana";
- "Rügen";
- "Autumn fun";
- Sakhalin remontantnaya.
Some varieties of remontant garden strawberries, although they give a mustache, but in small quantities, therefore it is preferable to propagate them in the same way as beardless breeds. These varieties include:
- "Garland";
- "Elizabeth the Second";
- "Inexhaustible";
- "Selva";
- Tristar.
Reproduction without whiskers
If the strawberry you have chosen to grow does not produce enough whiskers or does not produce them at all, then you can propagate it either with the help of seeds or by dividing adult bushes. The rules for planting separated bushes coincide with the basics of agricultural technology when planting new strawberry bushes.The main thing is to prepare the site in advance, clear it of weeds and mulch the soil a week before the planned planting of the crop. After a month, you need to check how well the planted bushes have taken root. If the plant looks noticeably weaker than its neighbors in the garden, it is better to remove it and plant a new bush in this place.
The easiest way to plant remontant varieties with seeds is to take a ripe berry, spread it on the ground and cover it with sawdust. After waiting for the shoots, you need to determine the strongest bushes and transplant them into seedlings.
A more complex and reliable way is to use seeds purchased or separated from fruits. They need to be mixed with sand and evenly scattered over the surface of the planned beds. After that, the area is covered with agrofilm. The best time to plant strawberries with seeds is the end of March or the beginning of April.
It is worth considering that although beardless strawberry varieties can theoretically grow in one place for several seasons, in practice, after a few years, the bushes become too dense, which reduces their yield. That's why to maintain the ability of plants to bear fruit, it is necessary to divide the bushes every four years with a transplant of the separated part to a new bed.
