Features of care for strawberries in the spring
Although strawberries are not particularly demanding crops, how they are cared for in the spring largely determines how their further development will be. The more carefully and thoughtfully the “base” of agricultural technology is laid, the more plentiful and tastier the harvest turns out to be.
Features and General Recommendations
Caring for berries in the spring includes, in general, traditional items: irrigation and top dressing, pruning and weeding, as well as treatment for pests and diseases. However, in different regions there are some features of winter agricultural technology. For example, in the Urals, additional planting protection is required, consisting of haulm or straw and an air cushion.
In the Moscow region, it is customary to cover the bushes for the winter with branches of coniferous trees, and during the cold weather, pour snow on the beds on your own. That is why the spring care for early strawberries will be slightly different, but the base will still remain the same.
Treatment after winter
As soon as the snow completely melts, the strawberry beds will appear on the surface. As a rule, it is either April or May, depending on the climate zone. It is necessary to wait for warming to 5 degrees Celsius, after which you can begin to gradually open the plantings. First, the shelter is removed for a couple of hours, then every day the time increases. If it happens that frosts return, then the bushes will need to be completely wrapped again. At the moment when the comfortable temperature becomes stable, it will be possible to begin to partially open the plantings for the night, forming small openings for ventilation.
About a week after this, the coating is allowed to be completely removed.
This should be done on a sunny day without much gusts of wind. It is believed that it will be easier for strawberries to get used to the coolness if the film is removed from the evening. It is recommended to start the next day with garbage collection: uproot the roots of weeds or already harvested bushes, collect the material used for mulching, throw out dried leaves and fruits. This cleaning should serve as a prevention of the reproduction of pests and the occurrence of diseases.
If during weeding some strawberry bushes accidentally leave the soil, then you should not worry. This happens only with sick and weak specimens, which means that they can be destroyed immediately.
Trimming and thinning
An important stage of spring care is the formation of bushes. With the help of a pruner, all dried leaves are cut out, just like those that were affected by diseases. It is important to do this so that six to seven centimeters remain from the stem. In addition, if strawberries are grown exclusively for harvest, then the antennae will also need to be cut, leaving a distance of five centimeters from the middle. In addition, overgrown beds are subject to thinning.
Planting old bushes
The step-by-step instruction, which contains information on how to properly plant bushes in open ground, begins with the fact that the strawberries are dug out of the ground, and the earthen lump is slightly shaken. The bush must be divided into parts, and each must have its own horn. Before planting strawberries, you need to remove those roots that are no longer able to exist. (you can identify them by their brown color), and leave light shoots.
Then the seedlings should be in a solution of a growth stimulator for a day. The site itself, on which strawberries will grow, must be fed with fertilizers in seven days. Planting usually takes place on a warm but sunny day.
Weeding, loosening and mulching
Each watering is recommended to be completed with loosening, this procedure contributes to the transport of oxygen to the root system and high-quality moisture. Loosening occurs to a depth not exceeding five centimeters, so as not to damage the roots located close to the surface. Aisles can be processed with a chopper, and the bushes themselves - with special devices.
When loosening in the spring months, it is important not to cover young leaves with soil.
If during the procedure it turns out that some of the roots are on the surface, they will need to be gently piled up. In the event that the bushes have sunk into the soil after winter, the sockets will need to be carefully dug out. The loosening procedure is usually accompanied by weeding. A good solution would be to immediately mulch - create a layer with a height of four to seven centimeters. Peat, straw or sawdust are usually used for this.
It is important to mention that the material must be dried. Mulch can also be made from polyethylene cloth, which will even allow the berries to ripen earlier and keep their cleanliness. Agrofibre, which can prevent the spread of weeds, is also considered a good option. It is also allowed to use needles, branches, cones and even bark. However, to avoid soil acidification, this mulch must be accompanied by wood ash.
Watering itself should be timely, but not plentiful. The first irrigation is carried out when the soil has time to dry out after the melted snow. The rest of the time it will be determined depending on the condition of the soil. For example, if the earth easily transforms into dust, this indicates that it is time to water.
Also, the need for moisture can be determined by the appearance of the leaves: the more they curl, the more they need it.
Usually watering is carried out either in the early morning or in the evening after sunset, once a week. The water for this procedure is used the one that settled during the day, and it should be directed not from top to bottom, but next to the plants. It is important to mention that during dry periods, strawberries should not be watered next to the bushes, but between rows. When it gets cold, irrigation stops altogether so as not to cause rotting of the plantings.
Top dressing and fertilization
The fertilizer application scheme looks standard.
- First dressing occurs in the spring, when the old leaves are removed, but the flowers have not yet appeared. Organics are usually introduced, for example, chicken manure, which is simply laid out at the base of the bush and sprinkled with earth. You can also dissolve 200 grams of cooking yeast in 0.5 liters of heated water, after which everything is diluted in ten liters of liquid.
- Next top dressing arranged when the strawberries are already blooming. It is best to use mineral complexes containing potassium and phosphorus - use approximately 500 milliliters of solution for each bush. At the same stage, fertilizing containing nitrogen can be applied. For example, in 10 liters of water, dilute two glasses of mullein and a tablespoon of ammonium sulfate. One plant will need about a liter of fertilizer. If the bushes were planted only in the spring, then you can stop with top dressing. If the strawberry has been developing for the second year, then it is allowed to periodically add organic matter, such as mullein or chicken droppings.
In addition, any strawberry will not be damaged by the introduction of wood ash, which will crumble around the bush.
- In the spring time strawberries should not only be fed under the root, but also sprayed with either organic matter or mineral solutions. Such processing will allow the ovaries to form faster and transform into large berries. Spraying is carried out only on days when there is no wind and better in the evening.
Disease prevention
It is necessary to care for the culture in such a way that there is no possibility of infection. Ideally, in the spring, the top layer of soil should be removed altogether, because it is in it that insect larvae and disease spores hibernate. If this is not possible, then the soil will have to be thoroughly cleaned, loosened and rid of weeds. Then the beds are sprayed for prevention. To protect strawberries from spotting and verticillium, they are sprayed with ready-made solutions containing copper. In addition, the first leaves are watered with 40 milliliters of ammonia dissolved in 10 liters of water.
Gray rot is eliminated with a solution of iodine.
Usually 10 milliliters of the substance is dissolved in 10 liters of water, and the bush is sprayed with the resulting liquid. To prevent the attack of the weevil, 50 grams of capsicum will need to be mixed with 10 liters of water, and then the bushes should be sprayed with this solution. In addition, in the spring, the culture is watered with water heated to 60 degrees Celsius, again to destroy insect larvae and disease spores.
Watering is carried out so that the distance from the watering can to the strawberries does not exceed 100 centimeters. In addition, next to the plants it is worth planting those crops that can scare away insects with their pungent odor. For example, it can be marigolds or calendula.
gardening tips
Comments from experienced gardeners suggest that a good harvest in the country is possible only with regular plant transplants. This means that every four or even three years the strawberries must move to a new location. If you do this in the spring, then the plants will have time to gain a foothold and cope with low winter temperatures in the future. Transplantation is necessarily carried out in those areas where there are no drafts, and the surface is quite flat.
According to the crop rotation rule, these should be beds where onions and garlic, greens, peas and beans or carrots previously grew. Do not choose tomatoes or potatoes as predecessors.
Common Mistakes
Beginning gardeners often make the same mistakes regarding spring crop care. If you find out in advance common misconceptions, then you can save yourself from further problems in advance and ensure a good harvest. Common mistakes include over-fertilizing, damaging the heart of the plant, cutting leaves right under the root, under-watering, or inaccurate fertilization.
