Why do strawberry leaves dry and what to do about it?
Strawberries are a widespread berry crop, but that is why it often faces adverse factors. It is important to understand what certain manifestations of trouble are talking about, such as the drying of foliage, for example.
The reasons
If strawberry leaves dry, it not only brings a crop worse than it could. The plant loses all visual appeal. Moreover, it is likely that the disease will spread from one bush to another. That is why it is so important for farmers to know the real reasons why the foliage suddenly dries up and the berries disappear.
- Quite logically, one of the main harmful factors is overdried land. This is especially likely against the background of excessively rare watering. Strawberry plants are not adapted to life in desert conditions, and it is not difficult to recognize such a condition - the lower leaves are initially affected.
- But if there is enough moisture, gardeners are obliged to test the assumption of disease. Drying of the leaves is often provoked by late blight. Particular care must be taken due to the fact that the time of development of the disease exactly coincides with the natural period of leaf fall.
It is possible to accurately determine the defeat of strawberries with phytophthora by detecting a reddish color of the root base. But sometimes the leaves dry up and curl up not due to infection, but due to pest damage.
- The main danger among them is the whitefly and the strawberry leaf beetle. These insects are very fond of not only the juice of the leaf, but also the leaf plates themselves.Pests hibernate in the upper part of the earth and begin to attack strawberry bushes in early spring.
- If the edges turn brown, rust is almost certainly the real cause. It strikes strawberries on acidic damp ground. First of all, the disease covers the leaves from below and leads to their drying.
- The same problem can be associated with infection with all sorts of spotting. All diseased bushes grow slowly and form rosettes that are too small, the middle of which is often overflowing with small foliage.
Sometimes gardeners are faced with the fact that the tips of strawberry leaves turn black. The most likely reason is that the need for mulching with humus, straw is ignored. The appearance of black or brown spots, systematically increasing in size, indicates infection with brown spotting. Unfortunately, such a disease is incurable and you will have to uproot the bushes and then burn them. The soil is neutralized with Bordeaux liquid, preventing the spread of infection to other bushes with the help of copper preparations (most often vitriol).
Prevention
It is preventive measures that play the main role in the fight against drying foliage. There are a number of techniques that can minimize the risk of insect attack and disease. These include:
- correct crop rotation (return of strawberries to one place after at least 4 or 5 years);
- planting it only where garlic and onions are extracted;
- watering the beds with "Fitosporin" and a thick solution of potassium permanganate before planting;
- careful check of a condition of saplings;
- exposure of planting material for 30 minutes before planting in a solution of potassium permanganate;
- spring and autumn treatment with protective preparations;
- cutting off unwanted leaves after the end of the growing season;
- loosening (ideally - digging) of the earth before the onset of autumn cold weather;
- repelling pests with garlic.
What to treat?
It happens that pests and pathogens still overcome the protection. In such cases, special measures must be taken to stabilize the state of the berry crop.
First of all, if the leaves dry, something must be done about watering, since this is the most likely cause.
Usually they do it like this:
- irrigate plantings 1 time in 7 days;
- bring the amount of water on hot days to 10 liters for every 4 plants;
- increase moisture retention in light dry soil due to mulching.
Noticing the invasion of the whitefly, it is necessary to wrap the wooden sticks with adhesive tape and set them every 50 cm around the perimeter. The fight against other pests by spraying is carried out immediately after the snow melts. It is also worth holding such events immediately before flowering. At the same time, they look so that the flower stalks have already come out, but have not yet blossomed. You can treat with "Karbosof", "Aktellik" and "Aktara" are also suitable, but it is best to alternate drugs.
Powdery mildew most often occurs in greenhouses. The high humidity of well-heated air also contributes to its appearance. It is recommended to supplement the treatment with morning and evening airing. Whey or milk helps to get rid of powdery mildew, which is diluted in a ratio of 1 to 3. Processing is done once a week.
