Bugs in cereals: where do they come from and how to get them out?
Every thrifty and clean housewife one day can find spices, cereals and other loose uninvited "guests" in her kitchen. Bugs can become a real disaster that will destroy food stocks. Therefore, it is necessary to arm yourself with effective recommendations and tips that allow you to quickly and permanently get rid of pests.
Reasons for the appearance
Unpleasant insects start up on the kitchen shelves quite quickly and also multiply quickly, regardless of the amount of cereals stored. At the first detection of pests, it is necessary to quickly take measures to destroy uninvited "guests".
The most common route for bugs to enter food supplies is to buy food that has already been infested by these insects. Only such a winged pest as a moth can independently penetrate into a dwelling.
Therefore, before purchasing cereals that are sold in transparent packaging, you should carefully examine its contents.
As a rule, conscientious manufacturers, before packaging their products, process bulk products with special compounds that destroy pests, if any.But not every company carries out a similar procedure with goods, due to which products appear on store shelves along with insects. The risk of acquiring such flour, pasta or cereals increases many times if the product is purchased in supermarkets or markets by weight.
This is due to the fact that contamination of products can occur from various products, for example, from dried fruits or dried mushrooms lying nearby. Spices not in their original packaging, but purchased from private manufacturers, where sanitary and hygienic standards leave much to be desired, fall into a separate risk category. Under the threat of attack by harmful insects are opened bags of additives that have been in the drawer for quite a long time.
Another option for the penetration of bugs into a home can be ventilation holes, hoods, as well as even minimal cracks in the walls and floors, through which small bugs can freely enter the house from neighbors.
In order to timely establish the presence of pests in products, you should pay attention to the following signs indicating the presence of beetles:
- the presence of visually distinguishable lumps in the package with cereals;
- stirring in a bag with pasta, porridge or flour;
- the presence of small holes on the packaging;
- deformation of the grains - holes appeared on the croup;
- living pests may be indicated by a specific brown coating on cereals and other bulk products;
- the presence in cereals and loose long cobwebs;
- when considering a package with cereals, one can observe grains at the bottom that have turned into flour.
If at least one of the signs discussed above is found, it is worth immediately establishing the type of dangerous insect and taking measures to destroy it.
Types of pests with names
Obviously, bugs appear only in those places where there is access to food. Moreover, not only cereals in packages or bags, but also minimal remnants of cereals, spices or flour on the shelves can become a bait for them.
However, in cereals, seasonings and pasta, not only creeping pests, but also flying pests start up. This applies to food moths. In addition to the usual cereals, these bugs do not disdain crackers, bread and sugar; in some cases, an uninvited "guest" can even be found in instant cocoa or coffee.
The increase in the number of insects dangerous to humans is happening rapidly, along with this, the level of damage to food is growing. However, in order to remove the bugs forever, it is necessary to clearly define its type, and on the basis of this already select the appropriate means to combat it. To establish the type of pest, it is necessary to study the main ones. As a rule, bread grinders, food moth, red flour-eater and flour bug overcome the kitchen shelves with supplies.
The first variety has wings, usually insects are very small, have a light color. In most cases, they are found in bakery products, but they can exist and give birth to dry herbs, drinks and cereals. If a bread grinder was found, we can safely say that they started as a result of the purchase of low-quality products, sometimes the pest enters the house in loose pet food.
Based on the name, you can guess that the flour bug, as a rule, lives in flour, but it happens that an insect chooses a pack of starch as its habitat. Infection of products occurs by the penetration of insects into packaging from other loose, standing on the shelf at home or on the counter in the supermarket. It can be semolina, oatmeal or any kind of flour. Sometimes the bug settles in buckwheat or dried fruits. Female insects prefer to lay eggs in the crevices of furniture or in the cereals themselves, so the spread of pests occurs very quickly.
The red flour-eater is a small bug that ends up in the home if low-quality loose food for feeding cats or dogs was bought. Gradually, it settles in cereals or flour. Insects love spoiled food, so they actively breed in bulk, which are stored in the wrong conditions.
The food moth looks like a gray butterfly; in the adult state, the insect can have a body length of about 10 centimeters. The pest lives in buckwheat, semolina, flour and rice. Such pests are taken in the kitchen due to gross violations of food storage requirements.
Without difficulty, a mole can enter a dwelling through ventilation or even opening windows and vents.
Ways to get rid
Today, there are quite a few effective options that allow you to deal with uninvited "guests" in kitchen cabinets, so every housewife who is faced with a similar problem can choose the most successful method for herself. Of course, the chances of a positive outcome are increased by the timely detection of insects in cereals.In addition, it is important to exterminate pests not only in the packages themselves with cereals and cereals, spices and flour, but also to treat furniture and nooks where pests could lay their eggs.
First of all you need to remove all supplies from the cabinets and carefully examine the contents. This will help to identify the main place of accumulation - the focus of infection. If black or brown pests are present in a single quantity, it is quite possible that cereals can be preserved after special gentle processing of cereals, which will not harm human health. Such methods include exposure to products using high or, conversely, low temperatures, as well as sifting through a kitchen sieve. In the case of a large number of beetles, the entire contents of the cabinets will have to be disposed of. .
It will be correct to close the affected products hermetically and throw them away, but it is best to take them immediately to the trash can so as not to store them in the apartment or house in the trash can, since the bugs will be able to get to the products from it again
Mandatory processing must be subjected to all shelves in cabinets, as well as containers intended for storing cereals. This can be done with a soapy or soda solution, in some cases you can use a weakly concentrated solution of table vinegar.
Mechanical and folk remedies
Among the large list of ways to deal with insects there are several effective recipes.
- Freeze. This method will bring results only in the case of a small accumulation of bugs that got into the house not so long ago and did not have time to give birth.The essence of the method lies in the preliminary sifting of the products, after which it is necessary to replace the packaging of porridge, pasta or flour and send them to the freezer for 15–20 minutes.
- Using a microwave oven. Since these household appliances are present in almost every kitchen, their effectiveness in pest control has been empirically proven. An uninvited guest is destroyed by processing cereals in the microwave under the influence of high temperatures. To do this, bulk supplies must be poured into a special dish for use in a microwave oven, and then placed for processing inside for 5-7 minutes. After the time has elapsed, you can check the result: if the bugs are still alive, then the processing time should be doubled. Next, the products should be sieved to get rid of larvae, eggs and the pests themselves.
- The use of saline. This method is suitable for killing beetles in legumes. The solution is prepared by dissolving two tablespoons of edible salt in a liter of water, after which the product must be placed in a convenient container and poured with salty liquid. After some time, the pests will be floating on the surface of the water.
- Bura. A folk remedy that has been used for quite a long time. It is completely harmless to humans, but for pests it is a real poison. The use of borax involves the disposal of all contaminated bulk products, the processing of shelves, after which the agent must be decomposed inside the cabinets. You can prepare it as follows:
- crushed millet, borax and sugar, taken in the same amount, are combined and rolled into small balls;
- the second option involves the use of dry yeast, sugar and borax.
In the first case, poisoned balls must be distributed among cabinets and drawers in the kitchen or pantry. The second method assumes that the product will be loose, so it is scattered into small envelopes and also sent to insect habitats.
- The use of boric acid. To prepare the composition, it is necessary to combine flour, sugar and acid in equal volumes. The tool should be put on plates and put in a closet.
- Products with a rich smell. Pungent scents are good insect repellents. The essence of use is to place citrus peels, peeled garlic cloves, bay leaves in boxes. As a fragrant effective seasoning, you can use nutmeg.
- The use of plants with a rich aroma. Such crops include dried lavender, fir, rosemary or cloves. Instead of a dry plant, you can use the essence and oils of these plants. This option is more pleasant from a human point of view, and as a poison for insects, cultures will help to destroy all types of pests. Alternatively, it is allowed to use natural antiseptics, which are calendula and chamomile.
Professional chemistry
Along with folk and mechanical methods of dealing with insects in the kitchen, there are specialized store formulations that will help with a large lesion, as well as when the above remedies have not brought the expected result and the bugs continue to destroy cereals and breed.
Drugs that have earned a good reputation are Karbofos and Antizhuk.The latter composition will have a complex effect, since it is able to destroy not only food bugs, but also insects that harm wooden surfaces and furniture in the house.
But, like all chemical compounds, the use of chemistry requires strict adherence to instructions and safety measures.
Another highly effective composition is the Rogneda remedy. This is a disinfectant composition that has a wide range of applications, therefore it is recommended for combating food bugs, as well as cockroaches and ants.
Preventive measures
To reduce the likelihood of the spread of bugs in household products, it is worth following some preventive measures. Such work should include:
- regular inspection and cleaning of the contents in the kitchen table;
- timely disposal of expired products;
- compliance with the recommended terms and conditions of storage;
- heat treatment of purchased products, flour, pasta and other bulk products;
- refusal to store bulk together with dried fruits.
Is it worth eating contaminated cereals?
Some people, after finding a small number of pests in flour or porridge, sift them, heat them in the oven and use them for cooking. But, as experts advise, it is best to refuse to use such, even washed and processed, cereals. This is explained by the fact that in the total mass there are still decay products and vital activity of insects, which in themselves can pose an even greater danger than a living individual.
As for a product such as flour, it is very likely that even after passing through a sieve, insect larvae will remain in it, which are simply impossible to identify with the naked eye due to their small size.As a result, such flour becomes contaminated with toxins, which can cause allergic reactions, malfunction of the digestive system and other negative situations related to human health.
Bulk Storage Tips
Any product requires proper storage conditions after release, as well as at home after purchase. The most correct option for placing cereals is to use perforated bags or glass containers with a lid. Cans or boxes made of metal or plastic are considered a good container for cereals, flour or sugar.
More and more modern housewives are returning to the storage options for such products by our ancestors - buying or sewing special bags made of natural fabrics. In such material there is good air circulation, and insects, as a rule, do not start.
Most often, these bags are boiled in salt water, which allows you to scare away and even destroy pests.
It is worth avoiding the purchase of a large number of bulk products, because the shelf life of such cereals, such as buckwheat or semolina, for example, is only six months.
However, the most important issue regarding the storage of cereals with a minimum risk of finding bugs in them is following the recommendations regarding storage periods, air temperature and indoor humidity.
