Can you fry with linseed oil?
In the old days, the inhabitants of Russia could not imagine their life without linseed oil. For our ancestors, a valuable natural delicacy served as an invariable component of nutrition. At that time, they had not yet heard of butter or sunflower oil, and therefore vegetable salads were enriched with flax oil, used during cooking, poured into pastry to enhance the aroma and taste of bread products.
Modern consumers also often use a natural ingredient, but many are concerned about the question of whether it is possible to fry with linseed oil.
Useful properties and harm
Flaxseed oil has a number of medicinal properties. Regular use of this remedy leads to the normalization of metabolism in cells. The product of natural origin contains a huge amount of fatty acids, B vitamins and minerals. It contains folic acid, an important component necessary for the normal functioning of the brain of an adult and the formation of the neural tube in the newly developing fetus.
Flaxseed oil activates the liver, increases its barrier abilities, successfully treats gastritis, eliminates the feeling of heat during heartburn, relieves a delicate problem - constipation, works as an anthelmintic. Eaten in the morning on an empty stomach, it helps the body wake up and prepare for the negative impact of the environment (smog from transport, urban infrastructure).
If you drink or eat it systematically, you can prevent the onset of myocardial infarction, stop the development of such serious diseases as atherosclerosis, hypertension, ischemia of the heart muscle. A healthy food supplement reduces the likelihood of a stroke, thanks to which blood clots are less likely to form.
Doctors advise using flaxseed oil for pregnant women, as it has a beneficial effect on the laying and normal development of the child's nervous system, as well as on his brain. Thanks to the use of an oily liquid, the nine months of pregnancy and the birth itself are easier.
But, despite all the advantages and positive qualities, there is harm from flaxseed oil. In itself, it is not a substance hazardous to health, but if you use such a component in excessive doses and without following a certain scheme, you can get a number of health problems.
The daily norm of flax seed oil for an adult is one tablespoon, and this dosage should not be neglected.
Studies and tests conducted by Canadian experts have proven that the abuse of this product can provoke, for example, premature birth.
Characteristic
Linseed oil is obtained by cold pressing. Thanks to this method of extraction, the finished food product retains all the medicinal properties, and it can be used as a medicine. The consistency of the finished product is no different from vegetable or olive oil, but the color can be different - from light brown to dark.
The last criterion depends on the degree of purification. The shelf life should not exceed 6 months, and this is provided that the container with the useful liquid is tightly closed and is in the refrigerator. If the storage instructions are not followed, the oil will become bitter and useless. Good quality flaxseed oil has a sweet taste and is never bitter.
Due to its rich composition, in particular the presence of polyunsaturated fats and linolenic acid, linseed oil can oxidize. This will definitely happen if the oil is heated. As a result, the oil becomes a carcinogen, that is, it can provoke the formation of cancer cells in the human body, which means that such a modification of it is unacceptable to use in food.
Refined flax oil is considered not so harmful. However, do not experiment on your own body. This is especially true for flaxseed oil, whose expiration dates are coming to an end or have expired a long time ago.
Roast or not?
With repeated frying, any oil becomes hazardous to health. Under the influence of high temperature, the structure of the product changes at the molecular level, and the once useful ingredient turns into trans fats. The latter have a different molecular chain than the natural, not artificially synthesized elements that characterize the chemical composition of the flaxseed substance.
On a large scale, trans fats are produced by hydrogenation. In order for vegetable oil to turn from a liquid state into a solid product, it is heated, and then hydrogen is fed through the hot mass. During such manipulations, a solid substance is obtained, which contains already saturated fats.
Being under the influence of high temperatures, hydrogenated oils lose all nutrients, but, worst of all, they slow down the work of human cells, do not allow them to eat normally.Subsequently, the metabolism is distorted, toxic products accumulate in the cells, which leads to the development of acute diseases of the cardiovascular system. Also, the accumulation of “bad” cholesterol begins in the human body, and the degree of “good” cholesterol decreases. As a result, cholesterol from the arteries enters the liver, where it settles and leads to poor health.
Trans fats also increase the number of lipoproteins, which directly affect the condition of the arteries. The latter lose elasticity, which can be the root cause of a stroke or heart attack.
During frying, flaxseed oil loses vitamins, from high temperatures they are destroyed. In this way, a useful product, as a result of heating, becomes not just a useless additive, but, even worse, a dangerous substance.
Possible Complications
If, nevertheless, someone decides to use linseed oil for frying, it should be noted that such use will not lead to death, however, significant harm will be done to the body in the shortest possible time.
Gradually, problems with the stomach will begin to arise, digestion will worsen, pain in the gastrointestinal tract will appear. In some cases, nausea may occur.
But it is worth noting that all these unpleasant moments refer to unrefined linseed oil, but if you cook food on refined, there is a high probability that nothing bad will happen.
