Argan oil: properties and uses
Cosmetics based on natural ingredients are becoming increasingly popular: various oils, medicinal herbs, etc. A special place in the list of these ingredients is occupied by argan oil, one of the rarest and most valuable products in the world.
What is it and what is it made of?
Argan oil is extracted from the seeds of the fruit of the African argan plant, a very rare tree. It is a spreading tree with a deep root system that protects the surrounding soil from erosion. Its habitat is very limited, because it lives only in the semi-deserts of North Africa. The region of distribution of argan - the southwest of Morocco - is declared by UNESCO Argan Biosphere Reserve.
Argan oil is divided into two types.
The first is a cooking oil with a richer color and taste due to pre-heating. It is used in cooking without strong heat, for example, traditional Moroccan amla pasta is prepared on its basis. Food grade argan oil extract smells like hazelnuts and almonds.
The second type of argan oil is cosmetic. It is distinguished by a lighter shade of color. It is obtained by cold pressing from the seeds. Its smell is almost imperceptible. It is widely used to treat skin diseases, as well as problems related to hair and nails.
The shelf life of pure oil is very limited and ranges from three months to six months. This also affects its cost.
Compound
Argan oil has a unique composition:
- mono-, polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats: omega-9, mega-6, linoleic acid and others;
- vitamins;
- carotene (provitamin A);
- polyphenols;
- phytosterols;
- squalene
Benefit
Health benefits of argan oil include:
- the ability to absorb water and soften the skin;
- saturation of the epidermis with vitamins, micro- and macroelements, increasing its elasticity, smoothing fine wrinkles;
- treatment of damaged cells, reduction of inflammation in acne;
- the ability to give hair shine and silkiness.
Polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats help the skin retain water and therefore elasticity.
Pro-vitamin A protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun and peeling.
Vitamin E increases skin elasticity, accelerates cell regeneration, counteracts inflammation and thickens capillary walls. Dermatologists have proven that it helps in reducing scarring and inhibits the formation of stretch marks.
Polyphenols slow down the oxidation of fats and have an antibacterial effect. They also have the ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation and thus protect the skin from its harmful effects, fighting photoaging. One of the polyphenols, namely ferulic acid, is a pronounced antioxidant, far superior in its action to vitamins A, E and C.
Squalene is involved in the formation of cholesterol, steroid hormones and vitamin D in the human body. Our epidermis contains 12% squalene.
The phytosterols (D-7-sterols) found in argan oil are very rare. In addition to argan seeds, they were also found only in the seeds of one Mexican cactus.They inhibit inflammatory processes, and also catalyze the renewal of collagen, which is destroyed due to gerontological processes and solar radiation.
Harm
Harm to human skin can be caused by organic peroxides, which are found in the composition of the oil produced by manual labor. Goats in Morocco feed on argan fruit, and the pits from the fruit are then hand-picked from goat guano. After passing through the intestines of goats, the shell of the fruit softens a little, which allows you to choose the bones from them with less effort.
An allergic reaction to the 10kDa protein, which is part of argan oil, is also quite possible. This protein is destroyed when processed by high temperatures and certain chemicals in the chemical industry. Therefore, manufacturers who claim that it is removed from their oil are offering you a remedy that is no longer completely natural.
Be sure to do a standard sensitivity test before applying the oil: drop pure oil or a cosmetic product containing it on your wrist. In the absence of traces of irritation after a day, you can safely use it.
How to choose and store?
Due to the inaccessibility and rarity, argan oil is often faked: diluted with other oils or even replaced with something else. How to distinguish a fake?
When choosing argan oil in a perfume shop, look at the packaging. The bottle must be made of dark glass, aluminum or stainless steel. If you are convinced of the authenticity of a product purchased in a transparent container, pour it into a tinted bottle.
The package must have the inscription "100% Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil". If additional elements are specified, the likelihood of a fake increases.
Argan grows in the Atlas Mountains region of Morocco, so pay attention to the country of origin. If the oil is Moroccan or from Tunisia, the probability of product originality is maximum. Now argan oil is often sold in bottles with a dispenser - for more economical use of a valuable product.
The color of natural unrefined argan cosmetic oil is pale golden. If the oil is dark, then there are several reasons for this:
- fake;
- edible oil;
- the oil was heated, therefore, more than half of the nutrients were destroyed.
You should also pay special attention to the written expiration date of the product. If its duration is more than two years, preservatives are possible in the composition or it is a counterfeit product.
Buy argan oil only in specialized perfume stores, while viewing the certificates of conformity and product quality.
Observe the storage conditions of this expensive cosmetic product. They are usually listed in the instructions for use.
