Coffee in pods: what is it and how to choose?
Coffee in pods is a pressed portioned espresso weighing 7 g. As a rule, a standard cup of drink is prepared from one package.
Peculiarities
Pods - are specially compressed espresso in the form of a tablet with partitions made of thin filtered paper. In production, such a tablet is packaged in a special bag of gas-tight and metallized film. This packaging technology is called E.S.E., which literally means “quick coffee”.
A pod is a modern and rather convenient option for preparing an aromatic drink at home or at work, while its quality is exceptionally high and quite comparable to espresso from expensive bars.
It should be borne in mind that it is possible to properly prepare a drink in pods only in special coffee machines. They are simple and straightforward to operate - you just need to immerse one pod, press "Start" and after half a minute enjoy delicious and fragrant freshly brewed coffee.
Advantages
Coffee in pods appeared on the market relatively recently, but every year the number of its admirers is steadily growing. This is due to the exceptional taste characteristics of the drink and the ease of its preparation.
The quality of the drink is in no way inferior to that served in coffee shops and restaurants. The price of pods is much lower than coffee in capsules, while the quality of both drinks is on the same level.
The pod coffee machine is universal, it works with a wide variety of coffee varieties, and this is its fundamental difference from grain machines, which involve the use of a single type of grain. Preparation of a drink does not require special knowledge and skills, the machine is quite easy to operate. Coffee in pods is prepared very quickly - it will take no more than 20-30 seconds for one cup.
Special packaging retains the taste and smell of coffee for a long time, prevents the penetration of foreign aromas into the bag.
Coffee in pods is 100% natural, it does not contain any aromatic additives and various emulsifiers, which are often included in the composition of capsule coffee and provide the formation of a thick and stable film. The aroma of coffee is achieved with the help of oil, which is squeezed out of coffee beans under pressure.
Preparation of coffee in pods does not generate waste - at the end of brewing, all coffee grounds remain in used packaging bags, so there is no need for constant cleaning and washing.
The unit is very ergonomic - it takes up little space, does not exceed the dimensions of a conventional kettle, and it works almost silently. In the pod coffee machine, you can brew any ordinary tea.
The use of pods is very convenient at work, when you really want to enjoy natural coffee, but there is no time and opportunity for its long preparation.
The pods are made only from selected varieties of Arabica, which is distinguished by a truly delicate and refined taste and thick rich aroma.
Flaws
Despite the large number of advantages of coffee in pods, users note a number of disadvantages of such a drink.
First of all, it requires a separate coffee machine; it will not work to brew it in a kettle or a Turk. At the same time, a check for such units starts at 4,000 rubles, that is, the purchase of even the most budgetary model will cost a pretty penny.
Secondly, many consumers have noticed the limited choice of flavors offered in stores, as well as the lack of any possibility to combine different varieties with each other and prepare coffee with additives. Over time, even the most favorite taste becomes boring and you want something new, but in the case of pods, this is not possible.
And, finally, the most significant drawback is the lack of places for selling coffee in pods. Even well-known food chain giants do not always include pods in their product list, so fast espresso lovers should look for a specialized store or order the product of interest via the Internet.
How to choose?
The modern market offers a large number of different types of coffee in pods, but, unfortunately, many of them are just a low-quality fake. In order not to make a mistake and buy real high-quality coffee, you need to take into account a few recommendations:
- Location of grains. Pretty good taste properties of coffee obtained in Colombia, as well as in Costa Rica and Guatemala. A drink made from beans grown in India and Haiti has a slightly sweet flavor, while Brazilian varieties contain a slight sourness. But the best Arabica comes from Ethiopia - it allows you to get a very strong drink with unobtrusive chocolate notes.
- Manufacturer. Grains and pods of the world famous brands Lavazza, Illy caffe, Poli Monodosa and Bristot have proven themselves well.
- Grind level. When purchasing coffee, preference should be given to products with medium grinding, excellent coffee is brewed from them, since the powder freely passes water and gives maximum of its nutrients to the drink.
- The content of the main components. Coffee is obtained from a mixture of Robusta and Arabica, while the ratio of 20% to 80% is considered optimal. The higher the amount of Robusta, the stronger the drink will be. That is why you should pay attention to the content of both substances and choose the variety that you like.
And, of course, the main advice - do not save on quality. If you saw pods on sale, the prices for which are significantly lower than the average market, then most likely you have a low-quality product that, at best, will not meet the declared characteristics, and at worst, will harm the body.
Varieties
Pods are very popular among coffee lovers. Consumers note that products of several brands have the best taste.
Buscaglione Arabica is a coffee whose structure includes Arabica with floral notes. It is recommended for getting espresso for those who prefer sweet drinks.
Buscaglione Decaffeinato is a drink made from beans grown in Central America. Coffee of this variety has a very slight acidity and a light fruity aftertaste. Buscaglione Long is a coffee for those who like Lungo and Americano varieties. This drink has a bitter almond taste and a pleasant spicy aroma. The coffee grind is coarse, so the cup can be filled much faster.
Buscaglione Passione is a classic Italian pod drink that will impress more than one coffee lover. In each cup of such a drink, you can feel the taste of chocolate with natural nuts and see a thick film. This is the perfect drink for espresso and cappuccino.
Italco Assolo is the softest variety, with a slight sweet-sour aftertaste. The drink has a rather delicate aroma, and golden foam adds to its appetizing. This drink contains a small amount of caffeine - its percentage does not exceed 1.2%, so coffee can be consumed even at night.
Italco Concerto is the best drink for the morning because this coffee has a great invigorating effect. This coffee is distinguished by notes of dark hazelnuts and a juicy aftertaste. The amount of caffeine in the pods of this variety is 1.8%, so the drink is not recommended for drinking in the afternoon.
coffee machine
The principle of operation of a pod coffee machine is similar to the mechanism of any other units: a bag is placed in the built-in container, then the water is heated to the required temperature and passed through the coffee powder under high pressure. Thus, the preparation of the drink will take no more than a few seconds.
The very first machines designed for brewing pods were created by the Swiss company Nespresso, which also released its own flavor line.
In our country, the production of such units was launched in 2004, the manufacturer was the Kuppo company. There is a much broader market for manufacturers these days. The manufacture of pod installations is carried out by such giants as Philips, as well as Grimacariete and Severin.
The Philips Senseo is considered the most popular pod coffee maker model today. This is a fully automated unit, characterized by small dimensions, noiselessness and low cost.
The machine is easy to operate, but it does not provide for the ability to change the strength of the resulting drink - this option is available only in more expensive models.
