Sea buckthorn drinks: useful properties and methods of preparation

Numerous sea buckthorn drinks help strengthen the immune system. Pleasant, with a slight sourness - they perfectly quench thirst, and when honey and alcohol are added, they provide a warming effect, save from chills and hypothermia. How to properly prepare sea buckthorn drinks, as well as the most popular recipes, will be discussed in the article.

Benefit

Sea buckthorn drink has the ability to enhance the production of antibodies, which helps to increase the body's defenses. Berries are rich in ascorbic acid (the content of vitamin C in them is 2 times higher than in citrus fruits), so their use becomes the prevention of colds and beriberi, as well as the first helpers in the fight against these troubles.

In addition, the composition contains vitamin E, which has a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin (makes it elastic, prevents the formation of wrinkles), the reproductive system.

Thanks to the tannins, pectins and fiber included in the composition, sea buckthorn and drinks from it improve intestinal motility, remove toxins from it, reduce the level of "bad" cholesterol and restore microflora. That is why drinks are useful for diseases of the digestive tract, as well as during the recovery period after diseases of the stomach, intestinal flu.

The ability of sea buckthorn teas and decoctions to enhance regeneration processes, remove toxins and relieve inflammation make them recommended for kidney diseases, various poisonings, including alcohol.

The effectiveness of taking sea buckthorn in cardiovascular diseases has been proven, since it contains polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats that improve the elasticity of blood vessels, which, in turn, prevents the formation of blood clots. In addition, as already mentioned, cholesterol levels are reduced, so we can say that taking sea buckthorn berries is the prevention of atherosclerosis.

Fresh, frozen or dried berries are most effective. During heat treatment, most of the vitamins and minerals are destroyed.

Contraindications

Like any product, sea buckthorn and drinks based on it may have contraindications. First of all, it is an individual intolerance. However, even if it is absent, with a weakened immune system, the use of sea buckthorn can provoke the development of an allergic reaction. This is due to the large number of biological components for the assimilation of which the body is not ready.

To avoid the development of allergies allows the gradual "accustoming" of the body to sea buckthorn drinks. For the first time, you need to drink a small amount of weakly concentrated drinks. If after 48 hours there is no discomfort or negative manifestations, you can gradually increase the concentration and dosage. A similar scheme for taking sea buckthorn is provided for children. Children under 3 years old are not recommended to give sea buckthorn.

Despite the fact that sea buckthorn juice and other drinks based on it have a beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys, it is better to consult a doctor before drinking them. This is due to the fact that after taking sea buckthorn, the acidity of gastric juice increases, which is unacceptable for gastritis, pancreatitis, stomach ulcers, and cholelithiasis. Exclude drinks should be in the acute period of diseases of the digestive tract, kidneys, liver.

Due to the high acid content, the use of sea buckthorn should be avoided in case of urinary tract diseases, since the acidity of urine increases, and it additionally irritates the already inflamed tissues.

Harvesting and storage of berries

Fresh berries are harvested from mid-August to the end of October (depending on the variety and climatic conditions). You can also pick berries after the first frost - the healing properties remain unchanged, and the removal process is noticeably simplified.

To preserve berries at home, you can choose different ways to harvest them.

Freeze

One of the easiest and most efficient storage methods. You can freeze berries along with branches. By the way, it will be easier to remove the berries in this case, but this method requires more space in the freezer.

Berries taken from the branches will be much more compact in storage. For freezing, undamaged fruits should be used. They are placed in plastic bags and tied or sealed by running a heated knife over the bag. First, air should be released from the bag by slightly pressing them with your hand.

When re-freezing, the berries lose their properties, their appearance changes for the worse, so you should not freeze a large volume. The best option is several packages in which 100-500 g of fruits are placed. That is, one package at a time.

Frozen berries can be used to make almost any drink.

Drying

The fruits can be dried both on the branches, collecting the latter in bunches and tied to the ceiling, and scattering the berries on a flat, clean surface in one layer. The main thing is to choose a dry, cool place for drying, always protected from sunlight. Otherwise, carotene (vitamin A) is destroyed in the fruits. A few days later, the berries are placed on a baking sheet and dried in the oven at a temperature of no more than 50C.

Sea buckthorn prepared in this way is brewed into tea in a thermos or teapot, suitable for making decoctions.

canning

You can preserve both whole berries and mashed ones. To do this, the fruits are sorted and covered with sugar in a ratio of 1: 1. If whole berries are preserved, then you need to make sure that they are not damaged; crushed fruits are also suitable for mashed potatoes.

After that, the mixture is laid out in sterilized jars, closed with lids and stored in a cool place (cellar, refrigerator). A similar composition can be added to tea, fillings for pies, cook jams, jams and compotes from them, and also insist on alcohol.

Sea buckthorn juice can also be preserved. To do this, it is squeezed out of berries, filtered and poured into sterilized jars, which are then rolled up with lids. It is recommended to add sugar and dilute the juice with water (otherwise it turns out to be too concentrated) immediately before drinking. This juice is suitable for making concoctions, juices, fruit drinks, adding to pastry dough or as an impregnation for cakes.

You can collect juice not only by grinding the berries and squeezing the juice, but also by squeezing the fruits directly on the branch. Naturally, you need to put a container down to collect the liquid. Then it is also filtered and preserved.

The fermentation period is about a week. Usually, a rubber glove is put on the neck of the bottle in which wine is prepared. It signals the end of the fermentation process: when the glove falls off, it is considered complete.

After that, the wine must be filtered and let it brew in the refrigerator for another week. The next step is bottling it in opaque glass bottles and corking. In this form, the drink should be placed in the refrigerator, where it will ripen for another 1.5 months. The finished wine is characterized by a mild taste, and in addition to enjoyment with moderate consumption, it has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, acts as a prevention of atherosclerosis.
