Sea buckthorn leaves: useful properties and contraindications, methods of use
As you know, the nature around us is rich in almost all elements necessary for human life. That is why a few centuries ago, most medicines were tinctures, decoctions, mixtures of various plant components. One of the common ingredients was the leaves of common sea buckthorn. Until now, they are widely used not only in folk recipes, but also in professional cosmetology due to their undeniable benefits and effectiveness.
Chemical composition
By themselves, the leaves of any plant are the part that contains almost all the main trace elements. It is on their surface that the processes of photosynthesis take place, as well as the processing and assimilation of various substances. That is why in most folk recipes not only fruits and berries are so actively used, but also dried sea buckthorn leaves. The most valuable is the raw material collected from the buckthorn tree.
The leaves of this plant are especially saturated with biochemical components, most of which are indispensable for the human body.
The most important of them are the following:
- tannin is an astringent that has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.Due to the high content of this component, sea buckthorn leaves are successfully used as the basis for medicines and cosmetics, which can reduce signs of inflammation in various diseases;
- retinol is a derivative of the group of carotenoids. It's no secret that this element is considered to be a "visual pigment" and it contributes to the good functioning of the human vision system. Similar substances, however, are contained in carrots in a much smaller volume. Retinol is also a fairly effective antioxidant;
- polysaccharides. Among them, sea buckthorn leaves contain pectin the most. It stabilizes metabolic processes in the human body, facilitating the absorption of almost all components obtained from food. In addition, pectin reduces the level of "bad" cholesterol, stimulates peristalsis and digestive function of the intestine, helps to remove harmful "slags" from it;
- tannins, in particular tannins. Their rather high concentration allows the use of sea buckthorn leaves in cosmetics for skin care. Tannins strengthen the bonds between proteins and thus ensure the density, elasticity and normal nutrition of the epidermis;
- hypofein also known as serotonin. This element is vital for the normal functioning of both the peripheral and central nervous systems;
- natural ascorbic acid - this is a real storehouse of vitamins, which is known as the most effective remedy for the treatment of scurvy and other forms of chronic beriberi;
- tocopherol normalizes the processes of metabolism and absorption of lipids;
- substance biotin, which is a complex containing vitamins of the H, R and B7 groups.It ensures the normal absorption of carbohydrates and protein by our body. Biotin normalizes the level of glucose in the blood, and also accelerates the processes of consumption, that is, the “burning” of subcutaneous fat. Because of this, sea buckthorn leaf products are popular weight loss supplements;
- triterpenic acid accelerates and increases the efficiency of natural tissue regeneration processes;
- vitamins of the PP group are indispensable for the normal functioning of the internal secretion organs, as well as for the regulation of hormones.
Benefit and harm
The high concentration of various vitamins and essential biochemical substances contained in sea buckthorn leaves make them incredibly effective in various pathological and functional disorders of the body. It is the beneficial properties of this plant that have made it a very popular raw material in folk medicine, pharmacology and cosmetology.
Most often, folk recipes based on sea buckthorn leaves are remembered in the winter season, when the risk of developing an influenza epidemic or common acute respiratory diseases increases. This is due to the high content of vitamin C, which plays the role of a very strong antioxidant and immunomodulator. At the same time, masks and creams based on this raw material also serve many cosmetic purposes.
Due to the inclusion of a large number of useful components, including vitamins and minerals, sea buckthorn cosmetics are great for additional nourishment of the skin or hair.
At the same time, other combinations of ingredients, especially sea buckthorn leaf acids, make it possible to cleanse the upper layer of the dermis well and get rid of excessive oiliness and hyperkeratosis.
