Chinese cucumber: description, types and cultivation
Today, the market offers a huge number of different fruit and vegetable crops for growing in open ground or in greenhouse conditions. Among this variety, Chinese cucumber stands out. The culture is notable for its excellent characteristics and a large number of varieties.
Peculiarities
For most gardeners, Chinese cucumber has become a real discovery. Despite the erroneous opinion that this culture is just a variety of a vegetable familiar to everyone, this is not entirely true. The culture is a whole subspecies, and its fruits are distinguished by two unique features, one of which is considered to be the length of the cucumber, and the second is its rather unusual shape for the inhabitants. Due to its external qualities, as well as due to the huge varietal assortment, this plant has become very popular.
Ripe fruits of the Chinese cucumber reach a length of 80 centimeters. Despite the rather exotic appearance, the pulp of the vegetable is moderately sweet, with a pleasant and unobtrusive aroma, which, according to some gourmet descriptions, resembles the aroma of ripe gourds. The last feature directly depends on the vegetable variety chosen for planting.
If we compare the “Chinese” with the usual cucumber, we can note the complete absence of bitterness in taste, a sweeter peel and a significant pulp density.
Small seeds ripen inside the vegetable, there are no voids in the pulp.The culture stands out for its excellent yield, competent agricultural technology allows you to collect an average of about 30 kilograms of vegetables from one bush.
Most of the Chinese cucumber inflorescences are female. As a rule, the plant blooms in buds that form bunches. As the practice of cultivating a crop under different conditions shows, the plant develops and bears fruit best in a greenhouse, however, it is possible to obtain high yields of a vegetable in the open air (both in southern latitudes and in northern regions).
Among the mass of features of the plant, it is necessary to note the precocity of the vegetable crop. Therefore, about one month passes from the moment the first sprouts are formed to the collection of ripe cucumbers. In order to enjoy an exotic variety of pumpkin and collect enough greens for the whole family, there is no need to plant several beds of Chinese cucumber. Enough 3-5 plants on the site or in the greenhouse. From one greens, due to its length, you can cook a full-fledged vegetable salad for the whole family.
Advantages and disadvantages
To make the most objective assessment of the culture, it is worth dwelling on the positive and negative qualities of the plant.
Among the advantages of Chinese greens, several points stand out:
- a significant advantage is strong immunity to most diseases;
- the precocity of fruits is considered a plus;
- it is worth noting the impressive number of cucumbers that form on the plant, and their large size;
- the culture is distinguished by the ability to actively bear fruit until the onset of frost;
- cucumber is self-pollinating;
- vegetables stand out for their commercial attractiveness;
- the plant belongs to the shade-tolerant vegetable crops.
However, like any other plant, Chinese cucumber has a number of disadvantages:
- the harvested fruits quickly become unusable, so it is unlikely that it will be possible to preserve the harvest of fresh greens for a long time;
- not all available crop varieties can be used for canning and other preparations;
- the culture needs to be tied up, otherwise the appearance of the fruit suffers significantly.
The best varieties
Most of the vegetable varieties were obtained in China, however, domestic breeders today offer cucumbers bred already in Russia. Among the most popular crops, it is worth highlighting the most productive ones, the description of which is presented below.
"Emerald Stream"
Culture owes its origin to the work of Russian breeders. The hybrid belongs to self-pollinated plants with a long period of fruiting. The 'Emerald Stream' bush is quite long, but has a low weaving capacity, in light of which it needs to be strengthened at the cultivation site with a support. Hybrid cucumbers have a somewhat elongated appearance.
The weight of one vegetable is about 200 grams. The peel has a rich green color with expressive tuberosity. The pulp of greenery is distinguished by high taste qualities. As the practice of cultivating a hybrid variety shows, from one square meter of the garden you can get a crop of about 6 kilograms.
The culture is early. Work on breeding seedlings is carried out in the first spring months. Cucumbers are planted on the site as soon as the temperature returns to normal, and the frosts recede. In a greenhouse, seedlings take root a little earlier. "Emerald Stream" - a disease-resistant variety, is immune to powdery mildew.Bushes grow well in shady areas, in addition, the plant demonstrates viability even after sudden changes in air temperature.
"Chinese Serpent"
This species, according to reviews, stands out for its high yields. Among the notable characteristics of the variety, it is worth noting the bizarre shape of the greens. As a rule, cucumbers reach a mass of 400 grams. The fruits are hook-shaped, covered with expressive tubercles.
It is recommended to cultivate the plant in greenhouse conditions.
In May, seedlings can be sent to open ground, and at the end of the month you can already get a long-awaited harvest. The plants are very vigorous and branched. The culture is self-pollinating, prone to long-term fruiting. The variety is resistant to fungal diseases and many viral diseases.
"Chinese Miracle"
This culture belongs to the late varieties of Chinese cucumber. The plant is unpretentious in care, gives generous harvests of juicy greens until the end of autumn. However, for successful fruiting, he needs regular watering and access to sunlight. The fruits of this variety are painted in dark green color, their edges are wrapped during growth. The taste of greens is delicate, the skin is loose and smooth. The bush is very strong and climbing.
"Cold resistant F1" and "Heat resistant F2"
These varieties of cucumber are recommended to be grown by gardeners who do not yet have much experience in cultivating vegetable crops. The main advantage of varieties is high resistance to low and high temperatures. They have been breeding seedlings since April. Due to the unique features of crops, seeds can be planted immediately on the site, but a month later.
The main requirement for the soil is its warming up to + 20 ° C, otherwise the bushes will not germinate.In northern latitudes, these varieties can be grown if the seedlings are covered with foil.
The development of crops is quite rapid, the central stem is very strong. Zelentsy are long, have a cylindrical shape and tubercles. The taste of the pulp is characterized by honey notes and a pleasant aroma. Plants are immune to Fusarium and fungal infections.
"White delicacy"
This cucumber is distinguished by especially high taste properties of the fruit. The plant perfectly takes root in any conditions, even in regions with adverse climatic features. The culture endures temperature fluctuations and high humidity. The name of the variety was given to it due to the unusual white color of the peel, which has only a slight yellow-green tint. The fruits are cone-shaped, develop up to a maximum of 15 centimeters.
"Shanghai fellow"
The culture has not yet gained due popularity, but it shows good results when grown in greenhouse conditions.
The main feature of the variety is the absence of the need for pollination by insects.
Bushes give good harvests before the arrival of cold weather. The plant continues to develop throughout the season, so it can greatly increase in size. Cucumbers are long, the weight of one vegetable is about 400 grams. The variety is resistant to fusarium and downy mildew. The fruits of this variety are cultivated for fresh consumption.
In addition to the above varieties of Chinese cucumber, such species as "Alligator F1", "Miracle", "Emperor", "Farmer" are also popular.
Landing
Since Chinese cucumber can be cultivated in several ways, the main task is to choose the best option for growing a vegetable.Sowing seed directly into the garden is much easier. It also helps to save the time it takes to breed cucumber seedlings. However, the maximum germination of the crop will be observed only if the seeds are pre-soaked in water and placed in heat until the sprouts form.
It is better to grow seedlings in small containers. The best option would be to root the planting material in disposable cups and place it in an apartment or house on the window. The result of this painstaking work will be noticeable by the results of the harvest. In addition, gardeners note the difference in the fruits that appear after growing in seedlings. As a rule, they have great advantages in taste and appearance.
To protect the seeds from infection with fungal diseases, they are additionally disinfected before rooting. In this case, you can use a weakly concentrated solution of potassium permanganate.
The deepening of the seeds should be carried out no more than 4 centimeters. It is worth considering the peculiarity of this variety of cucumber regarding the root system - it is significantly ahead of the indicators of the roots of a conventional vegetable crop in terms of length and development. The optimum temperature for the formation of seedlings of cucumber bushes should be + 30 ° C.
Just like the common cucumber, Chinese culture needs sunlight to grow and develop productively., good moisture level, rich and nutritious soil. Such conditions are easier to achieve when growing plants in greenhouse conditions, since the factors affecting the growth of cucumber can be controlled and adjusted without being tied to weather conditions.
The planting of bushes is denser than in the case of a regular cucumber, since the Chinese culture is not prone to the formation of stepchildren. Usually 3-4 bushes can be grown on one square meter. Since the cucumber develops mainly in height, it would be more correct to use trellises in the greenhouse or in the open field.
If the conditions for growth are not provided for the cucumbers, then their development will be slower, in addition, the appearance of the greens will suffer.
Some vegetable growers cultivate the plant in vineyards. As a result of this, the stems of the culture are intertwined and protect each other from the scorching sun.
Soil preparation for planting greens is carried out in the fall. For greenhouse soil, additional top dressing is carried out. For this purpose, the following set of useful substances is introduced into a special container: manure, straw, tomato stalks, and a mineral complex. All this is mixed with water and left under a closed lid until the arrival of spring.
On the site, the soil is prepared by digging it along with organic matter.
Good results are obtained by using manure or plant humus. In addition, superphosphate, sawdust or kalimag are introduced into the soil, after which the bed is moistened and covered with a film.
The seedling method involves planting seeds in February-March. It is better to root the material in a special soil mixture used for indoor plants. Additionally, a drainage hole should be made in the container for cucumbers. After deepening the seed, the soil must be moistened. The container should be covered with foil. To improve the growth of a vegetable in a container with a Chinese cucumber, you can plant low-growing beans, which will help maintain the nitrogen content in the ground at the proper level, which is important for the root system of greens.
After a week and a half, the first shoots appear in the container. During this period, you can remove the covering material, but it is important to carefully control the temperature and humidity. In the phase of the formation of two leaves, young bushes can already be transplanted.
Before landing, you should take care of the support for the greens. In the selected place, a landing hole is formed, the size of which should be similar to the container where the cucumbers grew. After that, the culture is carefully removed from the pot or cup along with an earthen clod and planted in the ground. Additionally, a little sawdust is introduced under the root, after which the bush is dug in and moistened.
Care
Agrotechnical measures related to Chinese cucumbers, not much different from the work of caring for ordinary greens.
- The introduction of liquid into the soil should be carried out in the morning or evening hours, since moisture in combination with the sun can cause a cucumber burn. For watering, you should arm yourself with a watering can. The introduction of liquid from a hose or watering container will provoke the exposure of the roots. For a Chinese cucumber, you will need about 5-10 liters per 1 m2 of beds. In the ripening phase of vegetables, the amount of moisture introduced is doubled.
- Fertilization is an important point. During the season, the bushes will need four times top dressing. 14 days after rooting in the ground, greens are fertilized with mineral complexes and organics. In the flowering phase, soil mineralization is carried out. The third feeding is performed during the period of formation and ripening of cucumbers, for this it is better to do foliar feeding. The last time fertilizer will be needed in a week.
- Soil loosening is carried out weekly.
- The garter will be needed at the moment when the bushes reach a thirty-centimeter length.
- For the prevention and control of diseases, the culture is sprayed with colloidal sulfur and a composition based on copper chloride. When cucumbers are damaged by a mosaic, the bushes are removed from the garden, and the soil is disinfected. From the defeat of angular spotting, treatment with Bordeaux liquid is carried out.
- The fight against insect pests (whitefly, spider mites) is carried out with the help of "Phytoferm". You can destroy aphids by spraying the culture with a solution of laundry soap.
Harvesting Chinese greens must be done daily. To remove the fruit from the bush, you need to cut it with a knife, bypassing the stalk. A freshly harvested crop is suitable for food within a day after harvest. If you store cucumbers in the refrigerator, you can significantly extend their freshness. For canning, the fruits are pre-cut.
