Cucumbers "Real Colonel F1": variety description, care and cultivation
When choosing a variety of cucumbers for a private plot, most gardeners are guided by good germination, the unpretentiousness of the vegetable and an excellent harvest. These criteria are fully met by the early ripe variety "Real Colonel F1".
Characteristic
Cucumbers "Real Colonel F1" refer to an early ripe self-pollinating hybrid intended for cultivation in open ground. However, if desired, it can also be planted in a greenhouse or under covering material. The appearance of the crop occurs 40-45 days after the appearance of cucumber seedlings. In the State Register, the plant appeared in 2004 as recommended for growing on private plots and medium-sized horticultural farms. The optimal regions for growing are Central, Volga-Vyatka, North Caucasus.
The plant has a powerful ground part, fairly climbing bushes, the leaves are of medium size and a rich green hue. The bush has predominantly female inflorescences that do not require pollination. The yield of the variety is high - up to 13 kg per 1 m2. More yield can be obtained by tying bushes to trellises. The crop ripens amicably, cylindrical spindle-shaped fruits with small pimples ripen on the bush. They belong to the gherkin type, the length is 7-9 cm, the diameter is not more than 4 cm, the weight of one cucumber is about 100 g. The skin is rather thin, the flesh is crisp, juicy, without bitterness. In a word, cucumbers have an attractive appearance and excellent taste characteristics.
Cucumbers can also grow up to 13-15 cm, but this is reflected in their taste. However, this variety does not produce overgrown cucumbers. When grown in a greenhouse, the fruits are larger, but they are inferior in taste to analogues grown in open ground. Like most early maturing varieties, "Real Colonel F1" is good when consumed fresh, as well as in salads, and can also be used for preservation. As a result of this procedure, the appearance and taste of the vegetable do not change.
The variety is characterized by resistance to most crop diseases, including powdery mildew and cladosporiosis. Please note that the "Real Colonel F1" is a first generation hybrid, which for the grower means buying a new bag of seeds every year.
If this is not done and you try to plant the seeds obtained from the fruits of the previous crop, the result of such experiments is unpredictable.
Landing features
Cucumbers of this variety can be grown both by seedlings and by sowing seeds directly into the ground. True, in the latter case, the harvest is carried out 2 weeks later. In any case, the "Real Colonel F1" requires light, non-acidic, fertilized soils.
When growing bushes with seedlings, it is recommended to purchase a special mixture for this crop, as well as use individual peat pots for growing. This variety does not tolerate picking and damage to the root system very well, so you need to plant one seed per pot.
To grow seeds in the ground, the latter must be prepared in the fall. First of all, it is required to dig up the site and introduce humus or manure - 5-7 kg per 1 m2.In the spring, repeat digging, form a cucumber ridge and once again add humus, covering it with a 20-25 cm layer of soddy soil. You can not apply manure immediately before planting seedlings, since the fertilizer causes the soil to heat up - the roots can simply burn out. A couple of weeks before planting seedlings or seeds, you need to apply mineral fertilizers - ammonium nitrate, nitrophosphate.
On the eve of planting, moisten the soil. It is better to use a weak solution of potassium permanganate for this, which also produces a disinfecting effect. After such moistening, the beds are covered with a film and left in this state until the next day. When planting a plant with seeds, it is recommended to pre-disinfect them using a weak solution of potassium permanganate and harden them. To do this, the treated seeds are wrapped in a bandage and placed in the refrigerator for a day.
The landing scheme provides for the creation of grooves with a distance of at least 70 cm between them. In the groove, the seeds are planted in increments of 7 cm. Planting depth - no more than 2 cm. The manufacturer recommends planting no more than 2-3 bushes per 1 m2 when cultivating the variety in greenhouses, no more than 3-4 bushes per 1 m2 - in open ground. It is important to follow the principles of crop rotation, not planting cucumbers of this variety 2 years in a row in the same place. You can return to it after 3-4 years.
You should not grow "Colonel" in the beds after zucchini, pumpkin. But the neighborhood with garlic and onions will benefit cucumbers - the smell of these plants repels pests.
Agricultural technology
This variety is responsive to the introduced additives. The first feeding is done on the 7-10th day after transplanting the seedlings with a mixture of urea and cow dung. The following fertilizer is applied during the period of active growth and formation of bushes.Nitrogen-containing top dressings will help to strengthen green shoots and the root system, stimulate their growth. However, as the flowering period approaches, nitrogen should be replaced with phosphorus, otherwise the plant will begin to grow green mass to the detriment of fruiting. Finally, during the formation of the ovaries and during the fruiting period, the bush is fed with nitrogen and potassium.
4-5 top dressings are required per season, while root and foliar procedures should be alternated. 2 weeks before harvest, fertilizers should be discarded so as not to increase the nitrate content in the fruit. Cucumbers "Real Colonel F1" do not tolerate drought. They need abundant watering 3-4 times a week. With frequent rainfall, the frequency of watering is reduced. The procedure should be watered in the evening or morning, using settled, not very cold water.
Watering with cold water will provoke a sharp cooling of the soil, which can cause the death of this heat-loving crop. In addition, cold water is not absorbed by the roots, stagnates in the soil, threatening to provoke root rot of the bushes.
The optimum air temperature for growing this variety is 24-26 C, soil - 18-20 C. When the temperature drops, plants should be covered. At extremely low temperatures for a culture, it dies, a slight decrease is usually fraught with a lack of color. If the cold snap occurs during the fruiting period, then the cucumbers ripen hollow. To obtain a high-quality and plentiful harvest, the use of trellises is mandatory. In addition, this makes it easier to care for the plant and reduces the likelihood of rot and powdery mildew.
A higher yield can also be obtained by diving extra shoots, the main thing at the same time is not to cut off the central and main side shoots.
The variety is demanding on lighting, most of the day the sun's rays should fall on the bushes, but not direct, but scattered. In this regard, it is recommended to plant corn on the sunny side near the garden. Her shoots will give a little shade. It is important that the beds are located in a place protected from drafts. The use of trellises will achieve uniform illumination of the bushes, but will prevent the "burning" of the fruit by the sun's rays.
Despite the resistance of the variety to most diseases, the plant needs periodic preventive measures. Spraying with a solution based on iodine, milk and laundry soap will be useful. It prevents the development of powdery mildew. In the fight against rot, a solution with the addition of baking soda helps.
Reviews
The variety received a fairly high rating from gardeners. Reviews allow us to judge that the "Real Colonel F1" is relatively unpretentious in care. This is largely due to its ability to be grown in open ground, resistance to diseases. Gardeners also like the fact that the fruits ripen within a month after planting. The fruits are tasty, suitable for sale (attractive in appearance, transportable, keep fresh for a long time). Delicate and thin skin, as well as a small size, allow the use of cucumbers for pickling. After such processing, gherkins remain tasty and crispy.
But not 100% seed germination of summer residents is not at all happy. As most note, the germination ratio is about 2/3. More experienced gardeners recommend checking seeds for germination before planting. To do this, dissolve a teaspoon of salt in half a glass of warm water. Throw the seeds into the resulting solution. Those of them that will be on the surface are unsuitable for sowing, they will not sprout.
You can also recommend the germination of seeds for 3-4 days. To do this, they are placed in a damp cloth (it must be moistened periodically as it dries) and left at room temperature. Sometimes the need to purchase a new bag of seeds every year is called the negative properties of the variety. However, this is unfairly attributed to the "cons" of the variety, since this is a feature of all first-generation hybrids.
