How to germinate cucumber seeds?

v

According to some reports, the first cucumbers appeared 6000 years ago in the tropical regions of India. This is an annual vegetable from the pumpkin family, familiar to absolutely everyone since childhood. In the summer season, not a single salad can do without it, and for the winter, cucumbers are pickled in jars so that this vitamin-rich product is always in the family's diet. Cucumbers can be bought at vegetable markets or planted at their summer cottage or even on the windowsill.

General rules

Experienced gardeners are sure that in order for cucumbers to sprout faster and in greater numbers, their seeds should be germinated before planting. For this you need:

  • sort out the seeds, throw away the shriveled, darkened, too small;
  • warm up the selected seeds - put them in a cotton or linen bag and put them under the sun's rays or on a battery;
  • disinfect seeds with manganese or hydrogen peroxide;
  • stimulate seed growth with the help of the drug "Ribav-Extra", "Novosil" or "Zircon".

After processing, the seeds must be soaked. For this you will need:

  • sealed container with a lid;
  • gauze or a rag made of natural breathable materials;
  • warm water.

One piece of gauze should be soaked in warm water and put on the bottom of the container, put the processed cucumber seeds on it so that they do not touch each other.Top with a second layer of damp gauze and tightly close the lid of the container so that air does not penetrate inside and a warm, humid environment is always maintained there.

If the rag dries out, it must be sprayed from a spray bottle, otherwise the hatched seeds may dry out and die. The container with germs should be stored in a warm place, but not in direct sunlight. It is best to put it in the bathroom near the radiator or by the stove or a warm kettle. A couple of times a day, the lid of the container should be opened and the seeds ventilated, let them "breathe".

Keep the seeds moist until they are completely swollen. In a humid environment and at warm temperatures, the sprouts do not take long to germinate and germinate on about the fourth day. You need to manually unravel the intertwined roots of the embryos with tweezers, very carefully so as not to damage them.

Before planting in the ground, the seeds should be hardened so that in the future they can easily withstand temperature changes, especially at night. The seeds are wrapped in cloth and put away for a couple of days in the door or on the lower level of the refrigerator or in the cellar, underground. Some summer residents alternate keeping seeds warm and cold for 12 hours to further strengthen them.

If cucumber seeds germinate very slowly or not at all, it is likely that the preparation process has been disrupted. The reason for this may be:

  • the seeds are planted very deep (ideally, the maximum depth of the hole should be no more than 2 cm);
  • the soil is too hard, dry, or very wet;
  • expired material for planting.

Effective Ways

The time before seed germination is the most difficult and dangerous in the entire planting process.In order for the seedlings to turn out strong, healthy and fruitful, a person should help her in this by all means possible to him. It is necessary to achieve a simultaneous germination of all sprouts, to get a rich harvest, since seeds of different sizes and qualities grow differently.

Seedlings can be planted in open ground only when they are 27-29 days old, not earlier than this period, otherwise they will be further weakened and there is a risk that they may not take root. No vegetable loves heat like cucumbers. It is necessary to plant them only when the last frosts end, namely in the last days of May. If you plan to grow cucumbers in an apartment on a windowsill or on a glazed warm balcony, then you can start doing this already in the last decade of April.

Seed germination is affected by heat and high-quality soil rich in humus and microelements. The maximum germination time is 14 days. If after this time the seeds have not germinated, you need to boldly plant the second batch, since the old one will no longer appear.

The reasons why the seeds failed to germinate may be as follows:

  • poor preparation of seeds for planting;
  • sowing material could be infected with pests or bacteria;
  • the ground was still frozen;
  • moisture deficiency;
  • the soil was contaminated with waste, toxins.

In hot sawdust

If there is no time to mess around with germination in gauze, there is an alternative way - germination of seeds in sawdust. This is very convenient, since the process of germinating seeds gradually turns into growing seedlings.Just in no case take sawdust from under the saw cut of boards of the chipboard type, since they contain adhesives and dyes that are used to process the boards for their further operation, and this is very harmful both for the plants themselves and for human health, which will eat the crop.

It is necessary to use exclusively pure natural wood suitable for agronomy. You can also buy sawdust in specialized pet stores, they are sold packaged in bags labeled "universal bedding for small pets."

The smaller and softer the sawdust, the better for the seedlings, because such a substance is more like soil.

The algorithm of work will be as follows:

  • To begin with, we need to take a large plastic bottle with a cut off neck, a plastic container with a lid, or a small wooden box.
  • We clean the sawdust from foreign substances, pour it into a container by 1⁄4 and fill it with hot water.
  • After a few minutes, when the sawdust begins to swell, put cucumber seeds on top of them. The distance between them should not be very large, but you should not pour them close to each other, optimally - 2-3 cm.
  • After that, we fill the seeds with the second half of the sawdust, which also needs to be well moistened with hot water. You can use a spray bottle.
  • We close the container with a lid or cling film and put it in a warm place for 2-4 days.

After a couple of days, as we placed the cucumber seeds between two layers of sawdust, the first sprouts with young leaves will appear. After that, they can be safely transplanted into the ground.A clear advantage of this method is that, due to the large distance between the seeds, they grow freely and straight, their root system does not get tangled with each other, so you do not have to separate the roots from each other with tweezers yourself, as is the case with seed germination in gauze.

Advantages of planting seeds in sawdust:

  • the seeds are well warmed up and immediately sprout;
  • the root system is strong and well developed;
  • sprouts immediately take root in the ground;
  • seedlings are strong and protected from diseases;
  • The germination process only takes a couple of days.

On toilet paper

This method of growing seeds allows you to get sprouts in a fairly short time and save space in the apartment. You do not have to clutter up the premises with boxes, crates and pots. Also, during germination in the container, a warm, humid microclimate will be maintained all the time, which is so necessary for young cucumber seeds for the appearance of the root system. Also, this method helps to prevent the appearance of blackleg - a fungal disease of young stems.

To germinate young shoots on toilet paper, you will need:

  • thick toilet paper;
  • polyethylene;
  • plastic container;
  • spray;
  • warm water.

After preparing the necessary equipment, we proceed directly to the germination process:

  • We take cling film or a plastic bag and cut it into strips the width of toilet paper. The length of the strip is approximately 80-100 cm.
  • The film should be placed on a flat surface and covered with a layer of toilet paper. If the paper is too thin, you can fold it in several layers.
  • Pour warm water into a spray bottle and spray a layer of toilet paper liberally with it.
  • Spread cucumber seeds on top, retreating from the edge of about 1 cm.The distance between seeds should be at least 3 cm.
  • We cover the seeds with another layer of toilet paper and again sprinkle them abundantly with warm water.
  • On top again put a strip of cling film or polyethylene.
  • Carefully take the strip by the side cut and twist it into a roll, but not too tight so as not to injure the seeds. We fix it with an elastic band or lace.
  • We make as many rolls as necessary based on the number of seeds available.
  • A paper tag with the name of the cucumber variety can be attached to each roll.
  • Pour 2-4 cm of warm water into a plastic container and place a roll in it so that half of the seeds are on top.
  • Close the container with a lid. Add fresh water as it evaporates. Containers should be stored in a warm, sunny place, preferably on a windowsill.

You can also make a small indoor greenhouse from a plastic bottle. We cut the bottle lengthwise, put a couple of layers of toilet paper on the bottom of each halves, sprinkle it with water, put cucumber seeds on top and cover the bottle with cling film.

A humid microclimate will always be maintained in this sealed container, the seeds will not require additional watering and will sprout in a fairly short time.

After the first shoots with young leaves have appeared, it is necessary to carefully unfold the roll, separate it from the strip with the film, it is no longer needed. Using scissors, you need to cut the paper tape into pieces equal to the number of sprouts, and transplant them into the prepared soil.

It is worth planting cucumbers with paper, otherwise, when it is separated from the sprout, you can injure it. Paper in the ground will decompose fairly quickly.

The method of germinating seeds on a strip of toilet paper is very easy, fast and gentle for the still fragile root system of a young cucumber shoot.

In peat tablets

There is another effective and easy method for quickly germinating seeds - peat tablets. This is compressed peat, stuck together in the form of small washers. They are enclosed in a grid of natural materials. Inside each tablet there is a noticeable recess in which cucumber seeds should be placed. Washers come in different diameters: 30, 40 and 70 mm. It is not worth taking too small, since the mesh does not stretch and can limit the growth of the root system.

We place the existing peat tablets in a pallet with high sides and fill them with warm water. After a few minutes, they will grow in size, become like cups with a recess. We place cucumber seeds in the formed hole and cover with cling film on top to create a greenhouse effect. You need to place the pallet in a warm place and carefully monitor watering - cucumbers love moisture.

Seedlings will appear in 2-3 weeks. Then you need to take a peat cup, and, without removing the sprout, place it in the prepared soil, otherwise you can injure the roots of the plant.

The combination of moist peat and soil is an ideal environment for the rapid growth of cucumbers, it retains moisture well and protects seedlings from fungi and bacteria.

How to speed up seed germination?

The rate of germination of seedlings is primarily affected by the ambient temperature - the higher it is, the better. Ideally, heat should not fall below 25 degrees. The same applies to the soil - it must be well warmed up so that the planted sprouts quickly take root in it and sprout well.In cold soil, the germination process will be long, many seeds may die.

Therefore, it is recommended to store a container with seedlings either on a windowsill flooded with sunlight, or near a battery, in extreme cases, near a hot kettle in the kitchen. For greater effect, the container with seedlings can be wrapped in a warm terry towel or an old bedspread, put a pot of hot water next to it and pour boiling water into it as it cools.

Also, the oxygen-free environment affects the rapid germination of seeds. That is why experienced summer residents recommend hermetically packing the container - either close it tightly with a lid if it is a food container, or tightly wrap it with food film or cellophane to avoid even the slightest ingress of air into the container. However, it is recommended to open the container once a day for a couple of minutes and let the seeds breathe, you can even wave your hand over them a little to stimulate air flow.

The soil for germination must be environmentally friendly and rich in macronutrients, otherwise the seeds will not sprout in it, or the plants will grow weak and sick.

If you cannot immediately determine whether your soil is healthy, it is recommended, just in case, to treat it with a solution of potassium permanganate in order to surely clean the soil from bacteria and fungi, or to disinfect the soil by any other method.

The growth of cucumber seeds is directly affected by their shelf life. If the seeds are more than 5 years old, then there is a high risk that they will not sprout or only a small percentage will germinate. Fresh young seeds that are not yet a year old also do not germinate well. It is best to sow them at the age of 2-3 years. This is the optimum seed age for germination.

Agronomy does not stand still, so seed growth stimulants have long appeared - artificial additives based on fungi, various bacteria and elements necessary for growth. They help the root system of the plant develop faster, become stronger and accelerate the growth of the shoot itself. In addition, they are made from ecological components, which will not affect the benefits of the grown crop.

The stimulator is used at the very first stage, when you have just removed the seeds from the pack. In a container with clean water, you need to add a growth stimulator and lower the seeds into the resulting solution. Stimulants should be used with caution, carefully observing the dosage, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the plant or even ruining it in the bud. When choosing supplements, give preference to more expensive and high-quality options.

There really is a tangible benefit from the action of the stimulant - the seeds hatch "like leaps and bounds", so use it if you have a rare variety of seeds or if you want to get a really plentiful and rich harvest. In order to start the work of the stimulant, mix it with water in the proportion indicated on the package. Add seeds to the resulting mixture and check the effect after 11 hours. If desired, you can add a little more growth solution, the main thing is not to overdo it.

There are also stimulants that increase the growth of the root system and the green part of the plant. Aloe juice and valerian infusion are natural biostimulants for the growth of cucumbers. They are completely natural and will not cause absolutely no harm to young shoots, but only strengthen them.

Tips

Before germinating the seeds, they need to be sorted out and thoroughly warmed up on a windowsill overlooking the sunny side.Or you can put the seeds on a piece of cardboard and put on top of the battery. So they will receive more heat, but they will not “burn out”. With this method, many more female flowers will appear, which, in turn, will greatly increase the chances of a bountiful harvest.

Dry seeds can be revived by placing them in a thermos with hot, but not scalding water (about 45-60 degrees), tightly close the thermos with a lid and wait a couple of hours. After such a procedure, the old seeds will warm up well, swell and fill up again with strength. The main thing is not to overexpose the cucumber seeds in water, otherwise they will become sour and become unsuitable for further use.

It is necessary to sort out planting material in order to remove dead, weak and empty seeds. To do this, it is not necessary to try on a Cinderella costume and engage in hand-picking. To speed up the work, you need to pour a little warm water into a glass jar, add one tablespoon of table salt, mix, pour the existing seeds into the resulting solution and wait 20 minutes. Remove floating seeds with a spoon, as they are already suitable for planting.

Below are some tips for when cucumber seeds have already shown the first signs of the formation of the root system and are ready to be transplanted into the soil.

The quality of the crop is greatly affected by the correct and regular watering of plants. In cucumbers, the surface of the leaves is very thin, therefore, with a lack of moisture, they lose turgor. But at the same time, you should not pour the plants, otherwise they will begin to wither and hurt. Cucumbers are very thermophilic, but it is better to water them with warm, sun-warmed water. If you live in a cold climate, then you need to grow root vegetables in a greenhouse for a richer and healthier crop.

For planting cucumbers at home, attention should be paid to soil care. The best soil will be garden, mixed with humus and peat in approximately the same proportions. Also, a little coarse sand and wood ash should be added to it to lower the level of acidity. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients until a homogeneous state without lumps is obtained.

About two matchboxes of mineral fertilizers should be poured into the resulting soil. They can be bought ready-made or made independently from superphosphate, urea and sulfate or potassium chloride. Fertilize the soil should be about once a week.

          After the cucumber seeds are planted in the soil, fertilizers are not added until the first leaves appear. Manure-based fertilizing is best avoided - cucumbers do not like excess organic matter. It is better to use mixtures of mineral fertilizers - they must be used in a ratio of 1 gram of minerals per 1 liter of water.

          Cucumbers begin to bear fruit about 4 weeks after they have been transplanted into the ground. Therefore, the sooner you are puzzled by the process of seed germination, the sooner you can eat the first healthy vegetable. Experienced gardeners recommend starting the seed treatment process as early as early April, therefore, the first portion of the crop can be harvested at the very beginning of summer.

          Now you know how you can properly and quickly germinate cucumber seeds at home on your own, so that they are strong, healthy, and give a plentiful rich harvest. After all, it is much more useful and pleasant to eat organic food grown with your own hands under personal supervision than to buy vegetables of dubious quality for a lot of money from a Chinese manufacturer. There may not be any harm from them, but, unfortunately, there is also no benefit.
