How to make a bed for cucumbers?

v

A crop so beloved by many gardeners, like cucumbers, is suitable for growing in almost any area, but loves warmth and moisture. Both a greenhouse and open ground are suitable for cultivating a vegetable. Cucumbers need to be planted in beds (in warm soil), which are not so difficult to equip. At the same time, certain skills of working on the ground and diligence are required. Our article is devoted to the features of creating beds for growing cucumbers.

Features and optimal dimensions

For a good harvest of cucumbers, plants need to grow and develop in a comfortable environment. There are no particular difficulties in growing vegetables in traditional beds, but when decorating the latter, some nuances should be taken into account. For example, this applies to suitable sizes of beds or trenches for cucumbers.

In order to grow a crop, you need a bed higher than usual. The distance between sprouts should be large enough so that adult plants do not interfere with each other. In width, such a bed is about 110 cm. If the width is much larger, this will make it difficult to process the bed (you will have to trample on it, and the roots of the cucumbers are located close to the soil surface).

The length of the bed is not of fundamental importance. It all depends on the convenience of the location of the trenches on the site. In fact, different ways of arranging the beds allow you to achieve a better result, since gardeners always have a choice.

Varieties

The choice of crop growing method directly affects the abundance of the crop. There are various ways of arranging the beds, the main thing is that there is a suitable soil.

Consider the most common options for cucumber beds that you can do yourself.

  • Trench beds. The scheme of planting crops on open ground in the form of a trench is the most widespread. As the name implies, cucumber beds are more like trenches that run across the site. There can be many such trenches (depending on the landing area).

Shallow trenches are prepared in advance, after which nutrients are added there. The trench bed is convenient in that manure decomposes better in it due to the fact that the soil warms up well. Immediately before planting, beds with compost fertilizer are covered almost to the top with a layer of soil.

  • High beds. Very suitable for growing vegetables. A garden with cucumbers in high beds looks quite aesthetically pleasing. As such beds are specially made wooden frames. They lay mineral fertilizers (mixed with bird droppings). On top of the furrow fall asleep with a layer of soil.

Thus, the bed remains slightly raised above the soil. Fans of high beds for cucumbers talk about the exceptional resistance of vegetables to external factors and diseases, since in wooden tubs the plants are reliably protected from weeds and retain their viable properties. The fruits are very juicy in taste.

  • Combined vertical beds. You can achieve a good harvest of cucumbers on the beds of different formats. With a combined growing method, you can use the best characteristics from all types of beds.You can distinguish a combined bed by an underground trench with a wooden frame installed above the ground.
  • The bed is portable or mobile. The mobile method of cucumber planting (in tubs, boxes) is ideal for non-standard areas (in places with turf, with infertile soil, on ground with level differences). The advantage of mobile beds is that they do not require much labor to create. Any design (boxes, barrels) is suitable for growing. In addition, there will be no need to dig up a landing site or come up with props.

Designs can be placed almost anywhere where there are no drafts and shadows. At the bottom of such a bed, the main layer of small branches is laid out, and on top of it - a layer of manure, leaves, tops. To enhance the effect, such a filling is mixed with a layer of soil (about 10 cm).

This is enough for the cucumbers to take root. The mobile bed is covered with a black film with small holes in which seeds or seedlings are planted.

In the case of early planting vegetables, the bed is covered with lutrasil or an additional layer of transparent film.

Selection and preparation of soil for cultivation

For the successful cultivation of cucumbers, it is necessary to look for the most suitable place for this, to cultivate the soil before planting. You can determine where the culture will feel better in the spring. It is worth remembering that cucumbers are very thermophilic.

But while some varieties need more sun, others are better off staying in a slightly shaded part of the garden (or kitchen garden), although cucumbers are classified as light-loving vegetables. In any case, to grow a full-fledged crop, you need to choose a well-lit area during the day.This may be a slightly plant-shaded area of the site, but preferably not under trees.

It is worth emphasizing that it depends on the region of residence how successful the spring planting of cucumbers in the open ground will be. The southern region has a lot of sun and heat, but many crops dry out due to constant exposure to sunlight. In any northern region, cucumber beds are usually arranged on the southern slope of a site with good natural light. In addition to heat and light, the quality of cucumbers is affected by soil characteristics. At this point, we should dwell in more detail.

Sandy and loamy soils are more suitable for cucumbers. It is important that the soil does not differ in high acidity. When planting cucumber seeds in acidic soil, you may not wait for the harvest or the seedlings will develop too slowly.

You can check how high the probability of strong acidity of the soil is with the help of litmus paper. To check, you need to mix a little soil with a liter of boiled water. And attach litmus paper to the finished mixture. The optimal indicator will be with a pH of 7-8.

Soil preparation must be done in advance. This is one of the main tasks before planting a crop in open ground. With the addition of manure, the soil is enriched with nutrients.

It is better to add organic top dressing in the fall. In this case, the site for planting is first rid of weeds, loosening the soil to facilitate cultivation. After that, the area is recommended to be watered (or sprayed) with a special solution. It can be Bordeaux liquid or blue vitriol.

In autumn, the soil can be watered with an alkaline liquid. Although this is best done before planting cucumbers.In spring, the soil is additionally fertilized with humus - organic matter enters directly into the soil.

The main thing is not to overdo it with organic fertilizers. For one square meter, 3.5 kg of manure and 50 g of fertilizing from mineral fertilizers are enough. Some gardeners can still add lime to the soil - 100 g per medium plot. This is enough to lower the level of acidity. After such a comprehensive preparation of the soil, it must be dug up and then leveled with a rake.

How to do it yourself?

Making beds for someone will seem like a very difficult job. With experience, all work is done quickly and smoothly, but beginners, of course, will have to “get their hands on it” in practice. Gardeners with different experiences share tricks among themselves on how to simplify this process. For example, on thematic sites you can find tips “for lazy people” on how to make beds yourself, without particularly straining.

The process of arranging the site takes place in several stages.

  • Dig trenches. The grooves should not be deep and large in size. For cucumbers on a traditional garden bed, a trench up to 1 meter wide and no more than 40-50 cm high is ideal.
  • Lay freshly cut grass on the bottom of the bed. To give the beds more strength, so that the ascended cucumbers do not fall into the soil, you need to put a layer of grass on the bottom of the trench and trample it down with your feet. Any herb will do. If you ignore this stage, then in the rainy season the bed will “float” or sag. Due to constant moisture, young sprouts will simply begin to rot.
  • Prepare fertilizer mixture. This is a special top dressing, which is easily prepared from moldy bread and potato peelings. The resulting mixture can be used to treat the beds, which must first be poured abundantly with warm water.
  • The fertilizer mixture is placed in a thin layer in a furrow covered with grass. Soon after this, the fermentation process will begin - bacteria will begin to develop. This is necessary for the normal cultivation of vegetables. For the next layer, you need to prepare manure.
  • Fertilized trenches should be lightly covered with soil. Now the beds are ready for planting vegetables. The trenches again need to be slightly moistened (pour, spray with water). After that, holes are made in the garden 5-7 cm deep and with a distance of 10 cm from each other.

You should not plant cucumbers too close, as in the future they will grow up and begin to shade each other, and this will slow down flowering. Seeds must be disinfected before planting.

And a few more tips on how to properly grow cucumbers.

  • Care is important during the entire stage of growing cucumbers in open ground. In the absence of proper care, even for adult bushes, all work will be in vain.
  • Elongated bushes need to be watered regularly. Irrigation determines how good the crop will be. You need to moisten the beds at least 2-3 times a week. In hot weather - daily, so that the earth does not dry out.
  • The soil in the beds with cucumbers must be periodically fed to stimulate growth and healthy development. After processing, the earth is filled with nutrients that are absorbed by the roots of plants. True, not every option is suitable for feeding cucumbers.

Periodic nitrogen fertilization with potassium is necessary when leaves appear and during the formation of lashes. Fertilizers with the addition of organic fertilizers - bird droppings, horse and cow manure - have a good effect on the growth of cucumbers.

  • In the process of growing cucumbers, periodic pinching of plants is carried out.The procedure begins with the appearance of the first leaves - pinching is carried out over the second leaf. Subsequently, the same procedure is performed on 7, 8 and 9 leaves. As the plant grows, pinching is necessary every three leaves.

And now let's look at an example of designing a "puff cake" bed. As the name implies, the furrows for planting cucumbers must be arranged in layers.

In practice, it looks like this:

  • coniferous branches are laid on the bottom of the trench with the initial layer (thin brushwood can be used), boards are needed for borders;
  • the second level is compost;
  • peat is poured into the trench as the next level;
  • next comes a layer of sawdust or crushed straw;
  • on the fifth layer, it is required to pour a little manure or humus with ash;
  • the final layer is thinly poured with fertile soil (about 20 cm), such a pyramid is obtained.

Beds or trenches for cucumbers in the open field are usually prepared in early May. Having leveled the soil and removed the clods of earth, you can put round arcs for the beds. These special devices are needed in order to stretch the film or non-woven covering material over the beds.

It is necessary to let the earth “infuse” like this for several days, after which the planting of cucumbers begins. The bed with manure, "burning out", will generate enough heat to give the seedlings the opportunity to appear faster. In a warm and nutritious environment, cucumbers feel more comfortable, grow better and bear fruit more abundantly.
