Features of planting and growing cucumbers in 5-liter bottles
The presence of a personal plot is not always a necessary condition for growing cucumbers. Some crops grow well on the balcony in five-liter bottles, if you properly care for the bushes and make timely watering and fertilizing with fertilizers.
Packaging features
Growing cucumbers in 5 liter plastic bottles is easy to learn and easy to keep on the balcony. It is convenient to water, move the bushes if necessary, while saving space. Even a non-professional gardener can grow cucumbers using this method, and the design can look like a boat or a barrel with a cut neck.
Five-liter bottles are filled with the substrate with the addition of water. They can be placed as germinated seeds, and small seedlings. It is desirable to fix the bottle by placing the lid down. It is removed, thus ensuring the outflow of excess moisture during irrigation.
In regions with a harsh climate, you can plant varieties of cucumbers that do not require pollination, getting a regular crop of quality cucumbers in the apartment. There is no need to use a greenhouse, respectively, there is a big savings in time and labor costs.
Inside the container is placed a mixture of:
- soil;
- ash;
- peat.
Ash will be a good source of nitrogen, which is vital for cucumbers. When the first shoots appear, they need to provide the necessary amount of light.As soon as the seedling reaches a length of 15 centimeters, it's time to make a trellis so that the lashes can catch on and grow along a given trajectory. In the southern regions, bottles are left in a greenhouse or even in an open garden, the main task is to find a place where there is enough sun.
You can act differently. A five-liter bottle is inserted into the ground, and its upper part is cut off. Thus, each bush is protected from wind and cold. This displacement is sufficient for the normal development of the cucumber root system. There are varieties in which it does not develop much, so they are ideal for growing in an apartment or on a balcony. Such a miniature greenhouse is inexpensive, and will last more than one year.
pros
The volume of the container allows you to easily replace the soil if necessary. Other benefits include:
- savings in irrigation;
- maximum free space;
- lack of weeds;
- in the garden, this is a good barrier against cabbage.
Minuses
This method also has its drawbacks. Bushes develop slowly, therefore, it will not work to get a quick harvest, but you can support the plant with additional feeding. The second disadvantage is that it is impossible to obtain a crop on a large scale in this way.
Substrate and container preparation
Before planting cucumber seeds in a plastic bottle, it must be cut and the substrate prepared. Plant growth rate, disease resistance and much more depend on its quality.
The soil used for planting is subject to special requirements, it must be:
- loose;
- air;
- porous.
The soil must not only absorb moisture, but also allow air to pass through, which is also necessary for the root system of the plant.The mixture can be prepared independently or bought at the store. The second method is chosen by beginners who do not know in what proportion to mix peat, ash and soil.
In fact, there is nothing complicated, all components are combined in equal doses, a drainage mixture and rotted foliage are necessarily added to the bottle. Drainage can be:
- egg shell;
- sphagnum;
- sunflower husk.
Leaves of oak and willow are not used, as they do not bring any beneficial minerals to the soil. A bountiful harvest is ensured from the use of birch ash.
Before planting, containers can be cut both lengthwise and across. The second option is used more often because it is more convenient. Drainage holes are easy to create with a soldering iron or a hot knife. Before planting, the containers are disinfected, this will reduce the possibility of infection of the bushes.
Sowing seeds
Planting cucumbers is a process that anyone can master. The container is not completely filled with soil, there should be a few free centimeters on top. As for the seeds, they need to be disinfected before planting, since a lot depends on the quality of the planting material. It is allowed to close the container to achieve the greenhouse effect.
You can plant immediately, but then the seed will germinate longer. Experienced gardeners advise soaking the seeds so that small sprouts appear, then the first leaves will appear on the surface of the soil in a couple of days. For five liters, you should not plant more than 5 bushes, if all germinate, you will have to remove the extra ones to provide enough space for the development of one or two plants.
Strong seedlings grown from high-quality seed material is a guarantee of a large number of ovaries, and, accordingly, vegetables. It is also necessary to make the selection correctly:
- immerse the seeds in water;
- delete pop-ups because they are empty;
- germinate selected with wet gauze.
It is necessary to plant seedlings in early April, using self-pollinated hybrids. This amount is enough for food, and in order to plant seedlings for subsequent planting in a greenhouse or open ground, work begins in mid-April.
Some gardeners plant in May. These are the vegetables that will later be used for canning. After seed germination, it is important to pay attention to subsequent care, to ensure proper watering and nutrition with fertilizers. It takes about 20 days for each bush to reach a size that allows it to be moved to open beds.
Care
It is easier to provide proper care on the balcony than in the open field. Growing cucumber bushes on the loggia is the same as on the windowsill of the room. After they have risen, you need to properly water, but do not flood, otherwise root mold and other diseases begin to develop. Even at home, you can provide an automatic watering system, for this the lower part must always be in the water, that is, the neck of the bottle. Thus, the roots reach for moisture, but there is no negative environment on the surface for the development of mold.
Today, many gardeners have become interested in the question of how easy it is to grow cucumbers on your balcony, and what needs to be done for this. It is important to feed on time, to introduce the required elements at each stage of growth. Growing only at first glance may seem simple, in fact there are many nuances.
Mandatory to do:
- whip garter;
- the formation of one stem;
- removal of side shoots.
It is very important to monitor the temperature regime, since cucumbers negatively perceive a decrease in degrees in the room. Plants will get sick if they are faced with constant drops, and the air temperature is already 10 degrees for them.
The soil must be not only well lit, but also warm, like the water used for irrigation. These are some of the most important requirements.
Agrotechnics for growing vegetables on a balcony is no different from those technologies that are used in the cultivation of cucumbers in the open field. Try to make sure that the soil does not dry out, and the sun does not become fatal to the foliage. Cold water is the root cause of the appearance of powdery mildew and blackleg on the foliage, which are not so easy to get rid of.
A few weeks after the seeds have been planted in plastic bottles, you can make the first top dressing. Perfect for this are tools such as:
- saltpeter;
- magnesium sulfate;
- superphosphate.
The cocktail must be poured under the root, not falling on the leaves, as it can burn them. After ten days, a solution with manure is used, providing the necessary amount of nitrogen for the development of bushes.
It is not enough just to plant seeds, a good harvest is guaranteed only with proper care of the crop. As soon as you notice that yellowness has appeared on the foliage, it is quite possible that this is the first sign of the appearance of a spider mite. Garlic tincture perfectly saves from it. Five cloves and boiling water are enough to make a home remedy for the treatment. Garlic is infused for six hours.
There are many fertilizers that are great for cucumbers. Some gardeners use plain bread.The infusion is prepared using baking crusts, which are placed in a bucket by 2/3 and filled with water. The mixture will be ready only after 10 days, keep the bucket in a warm room to achieve the required level of fermentation.
For one five-liter bottle, 500 ml of bread infusion is enough to make the cucumber bushes feel better. To achieve a good harvest, you need to properly care for the plants, and not be lazy. If you forget to water the ground, do not treat the leaves from pests, or put the cucumbers in the cold, the plants will die or develop slowly, as a result, the gardener will have crooked fruits of an unsightly shape and unpleasant bitterness in the mouth.
Experience shows that it is possible to get a quality crop on a balcony or windowsill, but you must strictly follow the rules for caring for vegetables.
