Oat flakes "Extra"
Various cereals occupy an important place in the diet of lovers of a healthy diet. Oatmeal dishes, such as the famous oatmeal, are also very popular. In order to properly plan your diet, it is worth considering what Extra oatmeal is, what types of these flakes are in general, and what are the benefits and harms of oatmeal cereals.
Classification
Since Soviet times, GOST has provided for the following classification of oatmeal flakes, which has survived to this day:
- "Extra" - flakes of this category are made from whole or chopped grains of peeled oats;
- "Hercules" - are made from refined oatmeal of the highest grade by pressing.
The product of the "Extra" category is additionally divided into 3 classes:
- "Extra No. 1" - made from whole oat grains;
- "Extra No. 2" - made from cut cereals;
- "Extra No. 3" - are made from cut oats by additional pressing.
Thus, flakes "Extra No. 3" are the smallest, and "Extra No. 1" are the largest. Not surprisingly, Extra No. 3 cooks the fastest (5 minutes is enough), but it contains fewer nutrients with a higher glycemic index. Flakes like "Hercules" are boiled for up to 20 minutes, but their composition is much richer than even that of "Extra No. 1", and the porridges are the thickest.
Compound
Regardless of the method of preparation of oatmeal, it contains the following useful substances:
- B-group vitamins - B1, B2, B6 and B9;
- vitamin E;
- vitamin H;
- vitamin PP;
- potassium;
- calcium;
- magnesium;
- sodium;
- phosphorus;
- iron;
- iodine;
- cobalt;
- magnesium;
- copper;
- zinc.
Of the essential amino acids, oat grains are rich in:
- arginine;
- valine;
- tryptophan;
- lysine.
Most of the useful elements are contained in the flakes of the category "Extra No. 1", since during their manufacture the grains lend themselves to the least number of processing steps.
The composition according to the BJU formula varies for different varieties of cereals. So, for "Extra No. 1" and for "Extra No. 2" it looks like this:
- proteins - up to 14%;
- fats - up to 10%;
- carbohydrates - up to 40%.
The calorie content of 100 grams of dry cereal is up to 310 kcal.
Flakes "Extra No. 3" have the following composition:
- proteins - up to 16%;
- fats - up to 10%;
- carbohydrates - up to 50%.
The calorie content of this variety reaches 360 kcal.
The composition of Hercules flakes is similar to the composition of Extra No. 3, but their calorie content is slightly lower - up to 350 kilocalories per 100 grams of product.
At the same time, most of the carbohydrates that make up this product belong to the group of polysaccharides - this means that they are processed in the human body more slowly than other types of carbohydrates, and due to this they supply the body with energy without noticeable fluctuations in the level of saccharides in the blood. Oatmeal also contains dietary fiber (including beta-glucan and gluten).
It is important to consider that the final nutritional value of oatmeal will be determined not only by the large one used, but also by the method of preparation. So, the calorie content of 100 grams of oatmeal cooked with water will be less than 90 kcal, while cooking the same product with milk will increase its energy value to 100 or more kilocalories.
Benefit
The beneficial properties of oatmeal are due to its rich and varied composition. First of all, with a relatively low calorie content, it contains many useful substances, which makes it possible to recommend such porridge for inclusion in diets for weight loss.This product is easily digested and at the same time forms a mucous mass that protects the walls of the stomach in gastritis and ulcers, so oatmeal is a frequent guest in therapeutic diets prescribed for such diseases. In addition, oatmeal is a good adsorbent that can reduce the concentration of toxic substances in the gastrointestinal tract. This product is especially helpful in removing lead from the body.
The presence of beta-glucan in the composition helps to fight the increase in blood cholesterol levels. And the presence of vitamin B6 allows not only to normalize blood sugar levels, but also to stabilize emotions and even slightly increase the efficiency of brain activity.
The presence of micro- and macroelements in the composition of oatmeal has a beneficial effect on the functions of the circulatory system, the strength of bone tissue and the condition of the skin and hair, which makes it possible to recommend such porridge in cosmetology and the treatment of diseases of the heart and bones.
Harm
Despite the obvious benefits, excessive consumption of oatmeal can lead to the accumulation of phytic acid, which in turn can cause calcium deficiency. And the properties of oatmeal as an adsorbent can reduce the content of other useful elements - primarily iron, magnesium and zinc.
It is strictly forbidden to use oatmeal in any quantities for people suffering from gluten intolerance (celiac disease), as well as allergies to its individual components.
When purchasing oatmeal, it is important to pay attention for their compliance with GOST. In the composition of oatmeal from unscrupulous manufacturers, mold, impurities of extraneous grains, pesticides, and even pieces of metal are sometimes found. The use of such porridge can cause irreparable harm to health, so you should carefully study product reviews before purchasing them.
How to choose
For a healthy person, the most useful will be the purchase of the most “coarse” varieties, which include “Hercules” and “Extra No. 1” - they contain more essential substances and give a feeling of satiety for a longer time. For diseases of the digestive system, as well as for children, it is better to purchase Extra No. 2 flakes - they are digested the fastest, and the consistency of the porridge cooked from them will be the softest. Such porridge will not irritate the walls of the stomach.
