Why is oatmeal bitter and what to do about it?

Oatmeal is loved by both adults and children. Oatmeal is a hearty, but at the same time not too high-calorie dish. Therefore, people who are losing weight, dieting and watching their figure love it.

However, sometimes things can go wrong. It would seem that you cooked porridge according to the usual recipe and already sat down to have breakfast, but found that the oatmeal was bitter. What to do in such cases and why oatmeal can start to taste bitter - you will learn from our material.

    Possible reasons

If your oatmeal is bitter, it means that the raw cereal is most likely rancid. There are several reasons for the bitter taste of this dish. Let's consider them in more detail.

    • Oatmeal can start to taste bitter if the cereal from which it was made has been stored on the shelf for a long time and its expiration date has expired. This situation can occur if the conditions for storing cereals were violated (for example, the wrong temperature regime or a torn package), if you purchased porridge without looking at its expiration date, which expired when the cereal was stored in a store, or if the oatmeal packaging was stale in your own kitchen.
    • Already cooked oatmeal can have a bitter taste, even if fresh cereals are used. This can happen if the cooking technology is violated (for example, the cooking time is too long).
    • Oatmeal can have a bitter taste due to the poor quality of the ingredients added to it (for example, stale butter).
    • The product may be bitter due to the fact that it belongs to the lowest grade (usually we are talking about cheap cereals and cereals).
    • Oatmeal may have a spoiled taste due to the fact that it has absorbed foreign odors of products (this is especially true in the case of an incorrect commodity neighborhood).

It should be remembered that an expired spoiled product should never be eaten. If you find that your porridge is bitter, you must immediately stop using it. You should not risk your health.

    How to fix?

First, try to figure out what caused the bitterness. If the cause of the unpleasant taste is expired cereal, then you can try to get rid of bitterness. To do this, oatmeal should be thoroughly washed in salt water, and then left in the same salted liquid for 20-30 minutes.

If you are confident in the freshness of cereals and other products that you added to the porridge (for example, butter), then most likely an oxidation process occurred in the air, and therefore the porridge began to taste bitter. To eliminate an unpleasant taste, try adding something sweet to an already prepared dish. It can be honey, sugar or other sweeteners.

Another tip is to boil bitter porridge in water with the addition of a bouillon cube.

It will no longer be possible to add sweet ingredients to such a dish, however, as experienced housewives promise, the bitterness should go away.

    Helpful Hints

Everyone loves oatmeal for breakfast. A tasteless bitter breakfast can spoil the start of a new day. How to avoid this and not spoil your mood in the morning?

        • Carefully check the expiration dates of oatmeal. This should be done directly when buying a product in a supermarket or store (if necessary, you can consult with the seller). Also in the store it is necessary to study the storage conditions of cereals and the integrity of the packaging.
        • After cooking, do not keep the dish for too long, but immediately start eating. This will avoid oxidation processes that can cause bitterness.
        • Another important rule is to follow the cooking technology. Waking up, you can gape and overexpose the porridge on the fire. Don't let the dish burn.
        • Make sure that all the products that you add to the porridge are fresh. Do not allow low-quality ingredients to get into the finished dish.
        • It is important to remember that oatmeal that has expired accumulates harmful substances. Therefore, such a product should be thrown away.

I cook fresh porridge, without any delay, but it still tastes bitter. The Hercules cereal has a shelf life of 4 months. I keep it in the closet where all the cereals are stored, in a separate container. I still don’t understand why the porridge turns out bitter? So there are other reasons. Perhaps the cereal is treated with something to increase the shelf life? Maybe someone faced such a problem?

Tatyana, my oatmeal is not only not bitter, but always tasty, no bitterness, rather sweet, although without sugar. But I cook it in milk, and keep the cereal in the refrigerator. Maybe that's why?)

I cooked both in milk and in water - it's still bitter.
