How to grow Jerusalem artichoke?
Not all of our compatriots are familiar with such a vegetable crop as Jerusalem artichoke. However, its record endurance, an incredible amount of useful elements contained in tubers and a bountiful harvest immediately attracted the attention of gardeners and summer residents in many regions of our vast country. Especially in those where agricultural activity is most difficult. Thanks to the tubers formed in the root system of the Jerusalem artichoke, gardeners called it the "earthen pear".
It is worth noting that biochemical analysis showed that Jerusalem artichoke is much more beneficial for the human body in comparison with commonly consumed fruits or vegetables. One tuber contains not only a starchy substance, but also sugar, fiber and B vitamins.
The use of ground pear contributes to the maintenance of excellent health in people suffering from diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. This perennial herbaceous culture is characterized by a similarity to the sunflower with a cap of small orangeish inflorescences, which propagates with the help of a tuber or seeds.
Peculiarities
Jerusalem artichoke tubers visually resemble potatoes, and the stems look like a sunflower. And thanks to the juicy and sweet taste, this vegetable is called a pear. Jerusalem artichoke is native to North America. The recorded maximum height of a vegetable crop is four meters. The process of growing an earthen pear is extremely interesting. Its inflorescences, resembling a sunflower, are much smaller. The flower itself has a very pleasant aroma. The roots of Jerusalem artichoke are dense and powerful, have branches in the form of edible tubers. The fruit, as a rule, has an oval shape, has a brownish tint. However, there are other varieties that are characterized by yellow, white and purple tubers. The weight of one tuber varies. The largest fruit can reach three hundred grams, the smallest - twenty grams.
Jerusalem artichoke is a non-capricious vegetable crop, extremely unpretentious in care. No special soil is required for cultivation. A feature of the earthen pear is the amazing ability to take root on the most infertile land. Jerusalem artichoke tubers and leaves contain many useful elements that are often used in the field of medicine for the treatment and prevention of many diseases. The probability of getting a low yield is extremely low. But also Jerusalem artichoke is surprisingly resistant to various infectious diseases and harmful insects. Therefore, the cultivation of Jerusalem artichoke is an excellent investment of your finances and efforts.
An earthen pear tuber is an excellent dietary product that contains a minimum amount of elements such as fats and fatty acids. One hundred grams of a vegetable contains only seventy-three kilocalories. Jerusalem artichoke does not contain cholesterol. The energy value of the ground pear is due to the presence of potassium, carbohydrates, sodium, dietary fiber and sucrose (approximately ten grams per hundred grams of tuber). In turn, the plant contains inulin. Thanks to him, an earthen pear can be used by people suffering from diabetes.
The vegetable has long been used in folk medicine. It is used to lower blood sugar levels in the presence of diabetes mellitus, to return pressure to normal in patients with hypertension, to cleanse the liver, and improve metabolism. The leaves of the earthen pear have found their application in cosmetology. They are often added to anti-aging creams and serums. And they also help to remove salt deposits from the body.
To grow Jerusalem artichoke, first of all, you need to take the seeds and at a certain time, for example, plant them in the garden, in the country or at home in a pot for the winter. It is necessary to take care of the plant at home carefully so that after planting in open ground in June, you can have a high yield from 1 ha. You must have a scheme of work and the necessary agricultural technology.
On a note! Few people know, but the ground pear began to be grown for food much earlier than the potato. The first recorded evidence claims that Jerusalem artichokes were raised and prepared by Indian tribes. In this connection, experts suggest that the plant was named after the Tupinambos Indian tribe. The appearance of potatoes pushed the demand for earthen pears into the background. Today, this useful vegetable can be found as an ornamental plant.
Preparatory work
For the cultivation of an earthen pear, open ground or a special container is used. The use of open ground suggests that the cultivation of vegetables will be carried out in the winter. As a rule, fourteen to twenty days before a serious cold snap sets in. Or Jerusalem artichoke can be planted in the spring, in the month of the best warming of the soil.In the autumn months, Jerusalem artichoke is planted in the soil with whole tubers, and in the spring, an earthen pear can be divided into a couple of parts.
The main requirement for planting this vegetable crop is the choice of site. It must have good access to light, while not shading other vegetable crops, as its stems can reach a height of up to three meters. It is advisable to plant Jerusalem artichoke along the fence line.
It is desirable that the soil for this vegetable crop has a slightly alkaline or neutral level of acid. Permissible limits are from six to seven units. To the contents of the soil, as a rule, Jerusalem artichoke is not whimsical. It grows well in any soil.
The only soil on which a vegetable cannot take root is a heavy salt marsh. For winter planting, it is advisable to prepare the soil in four weeks. And even if you want to plant a vegetable crop in the spring, site preparation is carried out in the fall.
To do this, the soil is carefully dug up so that the top thirty centimeters of the surface are processed. It is advisable to add a small amount of compost when digging. When deciding to plant an earthen pear in the spring months, it is not necessary to break large earthen lumps. It is recommended to do this in early spring. It is advisable to add phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to the soil when planting a vegetable crop. According to the crop rotation rules, Jerusalem artichoke is best planted after potatoes, cabbage or all nightshade crops.
How to plant?
Despite the fact that it is permissible to plant an earthen pear in the fall, many gardeners prefer to plant in the spring. As a rule, this is the end of April or the beginning of the May holidays. Vegetable crops are planted linearly. It is recommended to keep a distance of sixty to seventy centimeters, with an approximate step of forty to fifty centimeters. For the stability of tall stems, it is advisable to install a bamboo or wooden stick near the plant, so that if necessary it can be tied up. The allowable distance is ten to fifteen centimeters from the tuber.
As mentioned earlier, Jerusalem artichoke is a non-capricious vegetable crop and unpretentious in care. However, when the soil is infertile or when growing vegetables that intensively consume the nutrients in the soil, it is desirable to correct the situation. Fertilized soil will contribute to the activation of the growth and development of the earthen pear. For one square meter, you will need seven to eight kilograms of rotted animals and plant residues (humus). In order to increase the effectiveness of humus, add twenty grams of mineral nitrogen-containing fertilizer, twenty grams of potassium sulfate, thirty to forty grams of fluorine-containing fertilizer and four hundred grams of dolomite powder to its contents.
If the application of mineral fertilizers is impossible for some reason, there is another more budgetary way. To do this, you will need to add the following composition to each well. To prepare it, you need to mix: one tablespoon of ash, one teaspoon of nitrophoska and one teaspoon of fluorine-containing fertilizer.
For planting in the ground, give preference to a medium-sized tuber. Its length should not exceed five to six centimeters. If there are large tubers, they can be cut into several slices, which can later be planted. But to prevent the sliced Jerusalem artichokes from starting to oxidize, sprinkle them with a little charcoal. The recommended planting depth for these pieces varies depending on the time of year. For example, the planting depth carried out in the spring is eight to ten centimeters. In the autumn months - twelve to fifteen centimeters.
An important factor in the correct and active growth of a vegetable crop, which is often overlooked, is neighboring plants. Jerusalem artichoke gets along well with legumes planted nearby (beans and peas), cabbage, radishes, turnips, all types of onions, nightshade crops, in particular eggplant, and berry crops (especially currants and gooseberries). Undesirable neighbors for the ground pear are parsley and celery, as well as growing next to potatoes and tomatoes.
According to the rules of crop rotation, after Jerusalem artichoke, strawberries and strawberries begin to grow beautifully. However, despite even the most thorough harvesting of the ground pear, a small number of tubers still germinate. In this connection, a small crop of this vegetable crop is grown outside of crop rotation principles. But as practice shows, it is not recommended to grow Jerusalem artichoke in the same area for five years.
Watering and care
A large earthen pear bush, grown for several seasons, needs additional feeding and regular watering on hot sunny days. A young plant will need to be systematically weeded and weeded. An adult earthen pear does not need weeding, because, thanks to its powerful and strong root system, it does not allow any vegetation to germinate on its site. Few people know, but Jerusalem artichoke is an invasive plant. In other words, a vegetable crop has side shoots that actively grow in the soil, which often provokes germination in a neighboring area.
Caring for an earthen pear in the spring consists in weeding and loosening the soil in the area surrounding the Jerusalem artichoke. This is necessary in order to saturate the soil with oxygen and facilitate the breathing of the plant's root system. The end of May will delight you with grown shoots. It is advisable to properly spud them for several days. A pre-set trap will help get rid of slugs.
During the period of growth of the stems, especially if the landing site was chosen correctly (sunny and open), it will be necessary to build a support for the vegetable crop. To do this, drive in the perches next to the bushes and tie the stems with flagella.
At the beginning of flowering, earthen pear bushes are a chic flower garden. But it is worth noting that flowers take most of the useful and nutritious elements from the soil. Therefore, if the presence of flowers does not play a huge role for you, it is advisable to cut them off, while leaving the stem no more than one and a half to two meters long.
On sunny hot days, Jerusalem artichoke will need abundant watering. This should be done as often as possible, several times a day. The fact is that the huge leaves of the plant contribute to the rapid evaporation of water. But it is worth noting that the earthen pear holds up with dignity in dry weather and endures all the tests of the weather. If it is not possible to visit a garden or summer cottage every day, it is recommended to mulch the soil near Jerusalem artichoke with cereal stalks on weekends. Thanks to them, the soil will be able to saturate with oxygen and protect the plant from drought due to rapidly evaporating moisture.During the summer period, bushes are hilled three to five times with the addition of compost. If you used the nesting method when planting, then it is recommended to regularly loosen between the rows. Feeding the plant is carried out twice a month with the help of a complex fertilizer, which must contain minerals.
When to harvest?
The maturation of an earthen pear tuber lasts at least one hundred and twenty days. Harvesting in advance does not make sense, since the dug out fruit does not ripen in the open air. This vegetable crop is dug up in the spring months even before the soil begins to warm up. Or in the autumn period at the first onset of a cold snap. The tuber of this plant germinates well even at a temperature of forty degrees below zero.
In autumn, it is advisable to collect as many fruits as you are able to consume, and leave the remaining tubers for spring harvest. It is during this period that many people suffer from beriberi, and the use of Jerusalem artichoke will help correct this unpleasant situation. The only thing worth remembering is that this earthen pear must be removed without fail before warming comes. Otherwise, the tuber will give growth, and the plant from a healthy and tasty vegetable crop will become a weed.
It is necessary to store Jerusalem artichoke in the same way as other root crops. The place of storage is often a box of sand. Before sending the vegetables for storage, you will need to thoroughly wash them from the remnants of the earth and dry them thoroughly.
In the absence of your own basement, it is quite possible to get by with a box on the balcony. A small percentage of root crops can be stored in the vegetable compartment of the freezer.
