Features of growing vegetables

Vegetables are considered the basis of nutrition, since they contain useful minerals and vitamins necessary for the human body. To provide the family with natural vegetables, many summer residents prefer to grow them in their own beds. Such an activity is exciting, but requires certain knowledge in sowing and caring for plants.

Plant compatibility

Before planting vegetables in a garden plot, it is important to decide which crop will be the main one and which will be the accompanying one. Auxiliary plants play the role of a "live" mulch that protects the soil from drying out and weeds. In addition, a vegetable garden may include several types of vegetables if the summer cottage is small. In this case, the main crop is chosen that ripens late, for example, late cabbage, and the accompanying crops are early crops (radishes or cucumbers). In order for such vegetables to fully develop and give a good harvest, their compatibility must be taken into account.

  • For carrots and cabbage, squash, pumpkin and zucchini are ideal “neighbors”. Lettuce and onions can also be planted between their rows.
  • Beets, radishes and turnips are "friends" with legumes and onions. Similar cultures are also allowed to be combined with potatoes.

You can not plan on the same bed planting potatoes with cucumbers, tomatoes with cabbage, and peas with onions or garlic.

Selection and preparation of seeds

Vegetables are sown only after preliminary preparation and testing of seeds, which can be either independently collected from the best crops or purchased in a store. Pre-sowing activities include soaking, selection, calibration and treatment with biological substances. This guarantees a high percentage of plant sprouts and guarantees an excellent vegetable harvest in the future. In the event that few seeds are required for planting, they are usually sorted by hand, removing empty and damaged material.

Growing conditions

Regardless of whether it is planned to grow vegetables in an apartment, a greenhouse or open ground, they need to provide the appropriate conditions for growth and ripening. Therefore, before sowing crops, it is important to provide for sufficient illumination, temperature, mineral nutrition and normal watering. It is more difficult to grow vegetables in the northern regions of Russia, as there they feel a lack of heat and nutrition, while in the south of the country, gardeners have to pay more attention to watering. To date, there are many technologies, thanks to which it is possible to artificially create optimal conditions for crops.

Landing

Some vegetable crops can be planted in the fall because they are hardy and produce good seedlings in the spring. For example, for the winter, radishes, spinach and garlic are recommended for planting. They are not afraid of frost and can even be placed with flowers on the same bed. In the Moscow region and the northern zones of the country, planting of berry and vegetable crops is carried out in the spring, in the middle and southern regions, where winters are not too severe, summer residents begin sowing before winter. A special table and a lunar calendar help in the exact dates of sowing.

In addition, vegetables should be changed every season in their placement in the beds. The best predecessors when planting cabbage are onions, legumes, turnips, tomatoes and potatoes. Garlic can be planted in the area where carrots, beets and tomatoes used to grow. Almost all root crop predecessors are suitable for cucumbers, except for carrots.

To the greenhouse

When planting crops in greenhouses, it is necessary to take into account their height, size, shade tolerance and cold resistance. Therefore, the side beds located on the north side can be formed with physalis and tall tomatoes, and the center with cucumbers (this way it will be easier to care for them). The southern part of the greenhouse is ideal for planting eggplants and peppers. When choosing "neighbors", one should pay attention to their branching, and the beds should be combined in such a way that the leaves of the bushes of different plants do not touch each other.

In the case when the greenhouse has a width of more than 2.5 meters, the beds are formed up to 90 cm wide. Plants that are demanding for frequent ventilation are placed along the edges of the greenhouse, and photophilous plants are placed along the edges on the south side of the structure. On mixed beds, it is allowed to plant no more than five plants at the same time.

In open ground

Planting vegetables on open ground is carried out mainly in late autumn, when the night temperature reaches a temperature close to zero. Pre-winter sowing has many benefits as the seeds are hardened and hardened. Only swollen seeds are sown in open ground, they should not be germinated, otherwise they will die. As for seedlings, it can be grown all year round in heated greenhouses, but planting for the opening of the beds is carried out only in the spring.

Care

After planting vegetables in the country or at home on the windowsill, it is important to provide them with proper care. The soil must always be free from weeds, pests and parasites. To do this, it is not only treated with special means, but also supplemented with various microelements that stimulate growth and fruiting. For growing plants at home, you should select fertile soil with the presence of nutrients. Fertilizers are periodically applied to the soil.

It is also important to take into account the compatibility of crops in the soil, since some like acidic soil, while others cannot stand even its slight acidification. The list of vegetables that love acidic soil is small. These are carrots, turnips, cucumbers, potatoes and tomatoes. In addition, the soil must be loosened so that moisture is well absorbed and retained.

Watering

Caring for vegetables involves timely and regular watering. "Water procedures" are best performed in the morning or in the evening, when there are no bright rays of the sun. At the same time, morning watering is preferable in cool and cloudy weather, and evening watering in the heat. To check the level of humidity, it is enough to stick a dry stick into the ground, a moisture depth of 15 to 30 cm is considered a normal indicator. For plants that already have a well-formed root system, watering can be reduced to once every 3 days.

Fertilizer

All vegetables are demanding on top dressing, as their growth and yield depend on it. Plants need to be fertilized 2 times - during the formation of the root system and during the development of fruits. Top dressing can be liquid or dry. At the same time, mineral fertilizers must be alternated with organic ones. Top dressing is usually stopped a month before harvest.

Early vegetables consume a lot of nutrients, so it is important for them to contribute a huge amount of potassium and nitrogen. Cucumbers are considered the most whimsical, they should be fed every two weeks.Tomatoes need phosphorus, carrots need potassium fertilizers and superphosphate, and beets prefer boron and sodium.

Collection and storage

Mass harvesting of vegetables, as a rule, begins at the end of August. Therefore, if vegetables such as peppers, carrots, zucchini, cabbage, eggplant and potatoes grow on the beds, then you need to prepare for the work of collecting them in advance and provide the fruits with proper storage conditions. Since each vegetable has its own expiration date, some fruits can be stored all winter in cellars, while others are suitable only for canning. This must be taken into account when preparing for the harvest.

For long-term storage, it is recommended to select healthy, dense and undamaged root crops. They are placed in cellars or cellars lined with concrete and brick. Places where groundwater flows close are not suitable for storing vegetables. The roofs of storage facilities are additionally insulated with straw and earth, especially in areas where winters are cold. In addition, basements must be equipped with exhaust and supply ventilation.

The collected vegetables are placed in a box or special bins are made for them, raised 15 cm above the ground. For convenience, racks and shelves 60 cm wide can be hung in the basement.
