Tomato "Black Prince": description of the variety and subtlety of cultivation
Tomato "Black Prince" is a very popular variety. Possessing an unusual brown color, excellent taste and being unpretentious in cultivation, it has earned great popularity among Russian summer residents and homeowners.
Variety Description
Among the wide variety of tomato varieties, the Black Prince is considered one of the most popular types. The plant belongs to the indeterminate type, which means that there is no final point of growth, and therefore the height of the bushes can reach a two-meter mark. To prevent this from happening, the stem is subjected to the removal of the top, after which all the nutrients are spent not on the growth of the bush, but exclusively on the development of the fruit.
Plants are characterized by a persistent bristly stem and light green, wrinkled, medium-sized leaves that are not covered with pubescence. The rhizome is quite strong and reaches a width of 40-50 cm, which is why the recommended distance when planting bushes should be at least 60 cm.
An important characteristic of the variety is the type of inflorescence, which has many flowers and needs to remove excess ovaries. The first inflorescence is formed after the ninth leaf, and all subsequent inflorescences appear with an interval of three leaves. Judging by the reviews of experienced summer residents, an inflorescence of 8 flowers is considered the best option. It is this number of fruits that ensures the large size of each of them and positively affects the yield. According to the degree of fruit ripening, the Black Prince tomato is a mid-season variety, and 110–115 days pass from the moment of seed germination to the first harvest.
Tomato fruits have a rounded shape, slightly flattened from below and from above, they are multi-ribbed. The diameter of an average tomato is 7 cm, and the weight can range from 100 g to 0.5 kg. The peel and pulp of a ripe tomato are maroon in color, and the pulp contains some enlightenment. The unusual color of the fruits is due to the content of the coloring matter in them - anthocyanin, which appeared there due to the crossing of wild-growing tomatoes with red-fruited ones.
"Black Prince" is a self-pollinating plant, therefore, in order to avoid mixed pollination, it is not recommended to plant it in close proximity to other plants.
Peculiarities
"Black Prince" is considered the sweetest variety among all tomatoes and is distinguished by fleshy fruits with a high content of solids. Tomatoes do not tolerate long-term transportation and storage, due to their origin. The fact is that this type of tomato was bred by Chinese experts using genetic engineering, but due to the complete compatibility of genes from different crops, it is quite suitable for lovers of a healthy diet and does not have a detrimental effect on human health. The Black Prince variety has an F1 hybrid, which inexperienced gardeners often confuse with the original. The main difference between them is seed productivity.
If the seeds of the original plant germinate perfectly and give full-fledged offspring, then the seeds of the hybrid are not intended for planting and growing, and they do not give offspring.
The advantages of the variety include an unusual color, early maturity, high yields, simple cultivation, unpretentiousness and excellent taste. The disadvantage is the impossibility of long-term storage and transportation. The disadvantages include the unsuitability of the tomato for canning, which is why the "Black Prince" is considered a salad variety. The fruits can be used to make adjika and ketchup, but they are not suitable for making tomato juice. This is due to the high content of solids, due to which the consistency is too thick and atypical for juices.
Tomatoes "Black Prince" contain many antioxidants that prevent the development of malignant tumors and have a beneficial effect on the state of blood vessels.
Tomatoes have a moderate effect on blood pressure stabilization, which is explained by lowering blood cholesterol levels. In addition, regular use of this variety helps to improve potency in men.
yield
Tomatoes "Black Prince" are considered a high-yielding variety, thanks to which they have earned great popularity among summer residents. Collecting from one square meter can reach 8 kg. Subject to the rules of planting and the necessary care, each plant is able to produce 4–4.5 kg of fruit. The average weight of one tomato is 250–300 g, which is the optimal size for consumption and convenient for cooking.
To increase the yield, it is recommended to form a bush in one stem, and when removing extra inflorescences, leave 6–8 ovaries.
Landing
Black Prince tomato seeds should be purchased only in specialized stores. This is due to the presence of a hybrid in the variety, and is associated with the risk of confusing plants. It should be remembered that seeds collected from hybrid fruits will not give offspring and are not used for cultivation. And also when choosing seeds, you need to pay attention to the year of collection. So, seeds aged one year germinate much worse than two- and three-year-olds. Therefore, for good germination and timely ripening of the crop, this moment should be taken into account.
Before planting, the seeds should be washed with a weak solution of potassium permanganate and impregnated with a growth stimulator. The prepared earth should also be disinfected by heating it in the oven. After antibacterial treatment, the preheated soil is placed in wide containers and the planting process begins. To do this, small depressions are made in the ground at a distance of 2 cm from each other, where the seeds are placed. Then the soil is watered with warm water and covered with thin glass or film, which will help maintain the required moisture and the rapid germination of seeds.
When the first shoots appear, the film is removed, and the intensity of watering increases. After 3-4 full-fledged leaves appear on the stems, you can start picking plants. To do this, each shoot should be planted in a separate container. "Black Prince" is a rather heat-loving plant, so the temperature in the room should be within +25 degrees. You can grow Black Prince tomatoes both in a greenhouse and in an open way.
When choosing a place for seedlings in open ground, one should remember about its self-pollination.Therefore, such a site should be formed at a distance of at least one and a half meters from other crops. After the place for planting the crop is chosen, you can start planting young plants in open ground. This usually occurs at the end of May and depends on the climate of the area, as well as the likelihood of night frosts on the soil.
Planting seedlings is recommended to be done in cloudy weather or in the evening, when the sun is no longer so active.
In order for young plants to take root well, mowed grass needs to be laid out around them. This will help retain moisture in the soil on a hot day and ensure that the seedlings quickly adapt. Before planting in each freshly prepared hole, pour a liter of water and pour 100 g of wood ash. For depleted or infertile soils, the addition of 50 g of ammonium nitrate is recommended. After preparing the holes, you can start planting seedlings.
A young plant should be placed in the middle of the hole, straighten the root system and sprinkle it with earth. If the stem is too long, it is horizontally placed in a hole in the direction from south to north, leaving a top 10 cm high above the ground. Then, around the stem of a young shoot, you need to carefully pour a little earth and level it, covering the roots. After the roots are hidden, you need to pour the remaining soil and tamp it down. Further, it is recommended to cut off the lower leaves and water the plant abundantly under the root.
Care
Growing tomatoes "Black Prince" will not cause difficulties even for beginner gardeners. The only condition for obtaining a good harvest is timely abundant watering and regular plant nutrition, which is recommended to be done once every 10 days.In the process of caring for a tomato, periodic swelling of the soil is necessary, which will provide free access of air to the root system and will help remove excess moisture.
At the initial stage of growth, the lateral processes should be removed and one stem should be formed, which, due to its high height, requires the installation of a support and tying. Stepchildren should be removed with a knife or scissors.
Breaking off the lateral processes is prohibited. This is due to the fact that when manually breaking off the wounds on the stem can be large, which is likely to lead to infection of the plant and the development of diseases. After the extra shoots have been removed, you need to spray the plant with sour milk or kefir. This will help to avoid infection and contribute to the rapid tightening of damaged areas.
Weeding of tomatoes is recommended after watering, and if the plant is not grown in a greenhouse, but in open ground, then one day after each rain.
Watering
Tomato "Black Prince" is a moisture-loving plant, therefore it requires regular and plentiful watering. Moisturizing can be done in two ways: drip method and strait at the root. In no case should the soil around the roots of the tomato be allowed to dry out - this can lead to loss of leaves, drying of the stem and death of the plant.
Watering is recommended in the morning or evening hours, and in cloudy weather - during the day. Due to the risk of burning the leaf mass, watering the plant during periods of increased solar activity is prohibited.
top dressing
According to the method of applying top dressing, they are root and foliar. The former are introduced into the soil under the root of the plant immediately after watering, and the latter are sprayed onto the leaf plates using a spray bottle.Work on the processing of plants should be carried out in cloudy weather or in the evening. Experts recommend not to focus on one of the methods, but to use the alternation technique. According to their composition, top dressings are divided into mineral and organic.
Of the mineral preparations, Gumat, Ideal and Emerald are very popular. These drugs are quite effective, have wide availability, balanced composition and low cost. Of the organic dressings, the most common is a mixture of manure and water, taken in a ratio of 1: 20. Such a composition can be used 24 hours after preparation. It is recommended to start top dressing as soon as the plants bloom.
Diseases and pests
Tomato "Black Prince" is considered a fairly resistant variety to the occurrence of diseases. One of the few pathologies that a plant is sometimes exposed to is late blight. The disease is fungal in nature and manifests itself in a change in the color of the leaf cover. If the plant is infected with this disease, the damaged leaves should be removed, and the bush should be sprayed with a solution of copper sulphate, prepared at the rate of 1 g / l. The most weakened plants may be susceptible to brown spotting. This pathology is easily treated and passes quickly if, immediately after the discovery of the disease, the roots are sprinkled with wood ash.
More rare are cases of plant damage by tobacco mosaic, to cure which it is enough to spray the bush with potassium permanganate. As a means of pest control, any microbiological formulations designed for nightshade, as well as intended for the destruction of various types of worms and insects, should be used.
Tomatoes "Black Prince" are very popular. They are unpretentious in care and give a rich harvest, and thanks to their rich sugar taste and unusual color, they are a worthy decoration of the festive table.
