How to grow mulberry?

Mulberry grows both in America and in the central regions of Russia. You can also meet her in Africa and even in South America. This plant has existed since time immemorial, has a number of useful properties. Fruits contain many trace elements and vitamins. Wood can be a valuable building material. Thanks to the mulberry tree, paper and silk appeared in China 7000 years ago.

Description and plant varieties

Mulberry is a monoecious tree, and its flowers are of different sexes. Leaves are either simple or entire. The fruits are juicy, in appearance resemble raspberries, the diameter is up to one and a half centimeters. The taste of berries is pleasant, sweet. She ripens in the second half of June. The berry spoils quickly, in just twelve hours. Mulberry resistant to pests and low temperatures, tolerates drought well. After pruning, it quickly recovers. The mulberry tree in the East is called the king tree. Fruits have a large number of useful compounds, namely:

  • various acids of organic origin;
  • phosphorus;
  • carotene;
  • vitamins C, PP;
  • set of elements of group B.

Important: the fruits contain antioxidants that rejuvenate the body and strengthen the immune system.

The fruit can be used to make products such as juices, spirits, and vinegar. In China, mulberries have been used for breeding silkworms since ancient times. In total, there are about two dozen species of mulberry. In Russia, you can only find black, red and white mulberry, it grows in the following regions:

  • in Siberia;
  • in the Urals;
  • in the Leningrad and Pskov regions;
  • in central Russia.

Mulberry is a hardy plant, as it can withstand frosts of thirty degrees, and is also not afraid of pruning and shaping. The further north the regions, the more mulberry is found in the form of a bush version. Standard weeping mulberry is a hardy plant that is not afraid of urban gas pollution, so it is often grown in big cities on streets, boulevards and squares. Among the most popular plants are the following:

  • golden;
  • weeping;
  • in the form of a ball;
  • with large leaves.

A mulberry tree can bear fruit for up to three hundred years; plants feel especially comfortable in the southern regions. The color of wood can be either light yellow or darkish beige. Fruits can also be of different colors. Of the various varieties, it is worth noting the most remarkable.

  • "White Honey" not afraid of low temperatures, the harvest brings high. The plant is unpretentious to the state of the soil, the fruits are not stored for long (the bill goes to the clock).
  • Another known variety "Black Baroness". The berries of this mulberry tree are quite large (3–4 cm). This variety is hardy and cold hardy.
  • Variety "Vladimirskaya" - This is one of the varieties of mulberry, which has beautiful purple fruits. It does not require special care or pollination, tolerates pruning well, and has exceptional frost resistance. In the regions of Siberia, this particular variety of mulberry can be found.
  • Mulberry "Smuglyanka" grows up to 8-10 meters. The crown is pyramidal. The fruits are large, can be 2–3 cm in size. The berry is juicy and tasty.Plants are well resistant to negative temperatures. The yield is consistently high and this factor contributes to the great popularity of the plant in various regions of Russia. The berries ripen in the first half of July.
  • "Hartut" bears fruit in the third year of life. The culture brings high yields. Fruits reach 5 cm, color is black. These fruits are often used in winemaking as well as in the culinary industry.
  • Variety "Fruit-1" gives large-sized fruits that ripen in mid-June. The plant bears fruit within a month, the berries are exceptionally tasty. It has a good keeping quality, it can be transported over long distances. A feature is that the fruits in inclement weather become reddish.
  • Variety "Merezhevo" appeared due to the crossing of white mulberry. Fruiting is long (more than a month). Very tasty berries, which, unfortunately, quickly deteriorate.
  • Variety "Fruit-4" has a small compact size. It bears fruit well, and the berries are delicious. This variety can be used for commercial purposes, because it has a good keeping quality.
  • Variety "Shelly" known to many farmers. It has large fruits (more than 5 cm). Harvest can be done in the second half of June. This species is highly decorative.
  • "Black Prince" considered an elite, it has practically no flaws. This is a very beautiful plant, the berries of which reach a length of 5 cm. The taste is honey, very specific. The fruits can be transported over long distances. The berries are large, ripens in the second half of June. The variety has excellent resistance to pests and freezing temperatures.
  • "Ukrainian-6" - this is a very beautiful mulberry, its fruits have an original taste.It has a black color scheme with a matte finish. The size of the berries is 4-5 cm. The fruits are stored for quite a long time - two or three weeks.

Landing

It is best to plant a mulberry tree in open ground in autumn and spring. The plant loves small hills, well lit by the sun, it is not afraid of temperature changes or the invasion of pests. The most formidable of them are powdery mildew and root rot. And also tinder can bring a lot of trouble. The latter appears quite often on tree trunks, feeding on its juices.

Infection occurs during damage to the trunk, for example, cracking after severe frosts. If the plant "picked up" this infection, then it is no longer possible to cure it. Curly fine grain is also deadly for mulberries. Insects that suck blood from animals can infect a tree. Brown spotting is another misfortune that can appear at any time. Often the appearance of this disease is provoked by the following factors:

  • nitrogen deficiency;
  • lack of the required amount of nutrients;
  • dense crown.

Of the insects, the following can cause great harm:

  • larvae of May beetles and butterflies;
  • bears;
  • spider mite.

Mulberry is an unpretentious plant, because it can do without manure or black earth soils, it tolerates drought and negative temperatures well. Ideal soils for it are drained loams. Pits for tree sedimentation are prepared in advance, the soil in them must lie down. The size is made on average 75x75 cm, the depth is up to 50 cm. The soil that is taken out is mixed with manure. A small layer of gravel, a “pillow”, is placed at the bottom, then the roots of the tree are sprinkled with manured soil, watered abundantly.The distance between the trees is about five meters. Between the bushes leave 3 meters. The soil must be mulched.

Important! Mulberry can be male and female. Male trees do not bear fruit, they are suitable only as ornamental plants.

Care rules

Caring for mulberry trees is extremely important. It includes the following steps:

  • proper planting;
  • weeding;
  • soil digging;
  • correct and regular watering;
  • mulching and top dressing.

All these measures are necessary so that the mulberry develops normally and does not get sick. Growing a mulberry tree is recommended to be done in compliance with certain canons. After planting, seedlings need to be watered regularly, this is especially important for the first 4–6 weeks of life. With normal watering, the buds should bloom in time. Pruning of the standard mulberry is aimed at forming the correct shape of the future crown. You can graft a young tree to get the desired shape - this method is also practiced.

Fertilizers should contain elements such as:

  • iron;
  • zinc;
  • magnesium;
  • manganese.

Be sure to distribute chemicals evenly near the tree trunk. From the trunk, they should crumble at a distance of 12 cm. The amount of fertilizer directly depends on how old the mulberry is.

There are special tables that normalize the required amount of chemicals. The mulberry tree is so lively and hardy that it often feels great without additional feeding.

It is best to prune old and diseased branches in late autumn. In the summer, such an operation is forbidden to be carried out, because it can adversely affect the crop.If everything is done correctly, the plant (tree or bush) begins to bear fruit noticeably better. Pruning should be done regularly to avoid necrosis. If cracks appear in the trunk (especially in the hot season) - this is a real threat that the tree will be affected by the fungus. If the disease still appears, then the branches should be cut 30 centimeters below the affected area. Necrosis does not respond to chemicals, so cut off the affected branches as soon as possible.

Dangerous for the plant is the mulberry scale insect. This insect is microscopic in size. A large number of them can destroy the plant. The tree is treated with an oily composition. Spraying with insecticides is not recommended, the mulberry scale is resistant to that chemical.

Before proceeding with spraying, you should study the chemical composition by carefully reading the information on the package. Oil is used at a concentration of 2 tablespoons per 5 liters of water.

If the temperature is below +6 degrees, spraying work should be stopped. It is necessary to process both the foliage and the trunk of the plant.

Watering

Mulberry will grow poorly in lowlands, wetlands and in areas where groundwater comes close to the surface of the earth. If the summer is abnormally hot, then each plant needs a strait once a week, one bucket of water. Young trees in winter must be wrapped. The roots of the plant can suffer from frost (especially in young trees), so mulching should be carried out without fail.

On loose soils, it is recommended to water the mulberry twice a week. If the soil is clay, then one watering per week is enough. The tree requires an average of 24 mm of precipitation per week.Watering should be avoided if the weather is rainy. It is recommended to start up water under a little pressure, then the roots will receive more moisture.

top dressing

You should seriously think about feeding with fertilizers when the mulberry begins to bear fruit. This factor is especially important for plants that grow on sandy soils. In March, as soon as the snow melts, the trees are fed with nitrogen compounds. On average, fifty grams of nitroammofoska is applied per square meter, and mullein and a little bird droppings are also added.

At the beginning of summer, another top dressing is done. It is good to use "Kemira Universal" for these purposes at the rate of 25 g per square meter. In October, before the onset of cold weather, potash and phosphorus compounds are introduced. And also often add ash - 250 g per square meter. The soil near the tree trunks should be loosened regularly. It is recommended to fertilize plants with manure, which is diluted with water 1: 6. In the second half of summer, nitrogen chemicals are not recommended to prevent new shoots from growing.

pruning

Trees that are only a few years old should be trimmed at the top. Thus, it is possible to significantly increase the yield of the plant. The logic is simple - a large number of branches brings a large number of berries. The most hardy in terms of pruning are ornamental trees, they can be pruned often in the warm season. It is most rational to make the tree low (up to two meters), so that the branches are unbent, support them with pruning. A low tree makes it easy to care for it and collect fruits.

Important: excessive pruning can lead to the death of the plant.

reproduction

You can propagate mulberries using the following methods:

  • seeds;
  • root growth;
  • the use of cuttings;
  • layering.

Propagation by seeds is used to obtain a rootstock of varietal seedlings. Most often, seeds are taken from white mulberry. Before planting them, they need stratification. After a few years, seedlings can be transplanted, and the next year it is already possible to graft mulberry cuttings. Stratification is carried out in the following way: the seeds are placed in a container, which is placed in a refrigerator, where a stable temperature of +1–+5 degrees is maintained for four weeks. Next, a place is being prepared for planting the material in the greenhouse. If you plant the seeds in early April, then by October the seedlings will be 50 cm long.

Propagation using grafting extends to boles of young plants that have reached up to two meters. And also often create plants in which there are different varieties on the trunk. Under such circumstances, berries of a very different color will be present on the tree, the leaves will also differ in color.

Own-rooted seedlings can be obtained from green cuttings, but under normal conditions this is difficult to do. Most often, professionals use layering. In this case, a matte plant is cut to a hemp, the next year the young branches are bent to the ground. The shoots that grow vertically are spudded more than once during the warm season; in October, the finished seedlings are transplanted.

And also for reproduction, vaccination is actively used. For the stock, frost-resistant varieties of mulberry trees are used, which were grown from seeds. They are removed from the ground and placed in a container with sawdust. There they are stored for some time at a temperature of +1 degree. Scions are stored at the same temperature. Then the material is placed in containers and kept at a temperature of +24 degrees.

Vaccination can be done from March to April using last year's material. These may be cuttings that were cut last October. Store this material under the same conditions. Propagation is also done with the help of "fresh" cuttings in the summer months (June or July). To do this, you can use fresh shoots from 12 cm long, which are cut into small fragments, the leaves break off. Then they are installed in a container filled with peat and sand. Indoor humidity should be about 100%, sometimes PVC film is used for this.

Preparing for winter

Every winter, thin branches of young shoots are “grabbed” by frost at the mulberry tree. For a mulberry tree, both early frosts and March frosts are dangerous. The latter are dangerous because they can damage swollen buds, in which case there will be no harvest. When preparing the plant, a good mulching should be done around the tree trunk. The layer is poured at least 6 cm, sawdust is usually used. Spruce spruce branches should be placed on top of the formed "parapet". In the second half of October, all thin green branches should be cut.

gardening tips

You should adhere to the following rules from gardeners:

  • too much moisture can damage tree development;
  • after cutting work, always wash the tool with soapy water;
  • all bad berries should be disposed of by burning so as not to provoke the appearance of the fungus;
  • powdery mildew is effectively eliminated with the help of fungicides;
  • it is best to use organic compounds;
  • it is not recommended to spray the plants when the fruits ripen on it;
  • all varieties of trees should be purchased only in specialized farms that have a decent reputation;
  • in order to receive crops annually, it is better to plant heterosexual mulberry plants;
  • when planting mulberries, one should indent from other plants by approximately 4.5 meters;
  • in the southern regions, mulberries can be planted in autumn and spring; in central Russia, this should be done only in March and April.
