Chinese plum: what happens and how is it different?
Chinese plum is not the only name for an exotic fruit. It is also called "lychee". This plant was first cultivated in China. Now it is more widespread, and from America to Russia, although in our country it is not yet grown in every garden.
Peculiarities
Chinese plum deserves special attention. It is part of the Plum genus, which includes more than two hundred different varieties. In addition to taste, the Chinese plum has a lot of other features.
Firstly, this plant has simply amazing flowering. Unfortunately, they only manage to admire them for a few days.
Depending on the species, the cultivation of Chinese plum has become possible in different climatic zones of the Russian Federation. It usually does not grow above two meters and goes well in the garden with other fruit trees. At the same time, it is absolutely not necessary to form a crown, it initially has an almost ideal ball shape.
The foliage is also different from the usual Chinese plum. It is more elongated and shiny, there is no edge, the size of the foliage is larger than that of other plum species. If the plant blooms profusely, this does not mean that the harvest will be huge. Flowering begins in early spring, and therefore the likelihood of pollination due to cold weather is low.
The Chinese plum has a feature that distinguishes it from the southern varieties - it is a fibrous pulp that does not melt in the mouth. In addition, it is unlikely that it will be possible to remove the bone from the pulp.The aroma of the plant is specific: someone is sure that the Chinese plum smells like an apricot, it seems to someone that it is a melon.
The fruiting of the Chinese plum begins 2-3 years after planting. After this time, the crop can already be harvested. The most common fruit shape is round, in some varieties it is elongated, the shade is from yellow to red.
General properties
All types of culture have similar parameters. These include accelerated growth and high yields. Almost all trees bloom 36 months after planting.
There is one important nuance: the larger the fruit, the less resistant the variety to frost. The most resistant varieties - with an average size of berries.
Blooming Chinese plum is very decorative. Flowers can be white, pink, with a large number of inflorescences. If you remove unripe fruits from the tree, they quite successfully ripen. At the same time, the taste improves significantly.
Pros and cons
The fact that the Chinese plum is a fruit already speaks of a certain benefit to humans. First, consider the chemical composition of this fruit:
- Most of the Chinese plum is water, about 82%. Carbohydrates contain about 17%, the rest is proteins and fats.
- Lychee is a sweet fruit, but its calorie content is low, only 66 kcal / 100 g. If you carefully monitor your figure, then the Chinese plum will not harm it.
- It contains many minerals, organic acids, vitamin C and potassium.
- Lychee contains valuable antioxidants.
All of these substances provide certain health benefits. In particular, the rutin contained in the composition protects the body from the development of oncology, potassium supports the proper functioning of the heart, copper has a positive effect on the endocrine system.
Nicotinic acid helps the liver to function normally, lowers blood sugar. Effective cleansing of the body of toxins is also carried out with the help of this substance.
Show interest in the Chinese plum and nutritionists. The ability to satisfy hunger, combined with low calorie content, can significantly reduce weight, naturally, in combination with other measures.
According to scientists from China, the use of Chinese plums allows the body to fight stress, colds, bronchial asthma, and tuberculosis. Also, really unique substances were found in the Chinese plum, which improve blood circulation and help the body cope with heavy physical exertion.
Now a little about the use of Chinese plums in traditional medicine. Moreover, this is one of the significant advantages of this culture, since it is practically harmless. So, the advantages:
- Chinese plum - a prophylactic against atherosclerosis;
- lychee decoction can be used to gargle;
- use in cosmetology in the form of masks for the face and hair is possible.
There are also positive traits that are not related to health:
- wine can be made from these fruits;
- use as an ingredient for salads and desserts is possible;
- Chinese plum can be dried, frozen and canned;
- high resistance to frost, despite the southern homeland;
- earlier fruiting;
- good transportability;
- high resistance to various diseases;
- consistently high yields;
- attractive appearance.
If we talk about the minuses, then they certainly are: you should not eat a large amount, it can cause flatulence, it is also better to refrain from eating fruit for nursing mothers.No one has canceled an individual allergic reaction either, so if you have ever had an allergy to fruits or berries, it is better not to risk it.
Not to mention the short lifespan of trees. After 15 years, or even earlier, the entire garden will have to be replaced with young seedlings. In addition, the culture is susceptible to rot, which causes the root neck to rot. To avoid such a nuisance, great attention must be paid to the correct wintering of the plant.
Description of varieties
Let's figure out how to choose the right variety and what properties each common type has.
So, let's start with the Superior variety, which is the result of the work of Japanese breeders. Chinese plums of other varieties or cherry plums act as pollinators.
This variety has high yields every year, large fruits, excellent taste. This type of Chinese plum is considered dessert, the fruit has a yellowish-purple skin.
The growth rate of plums of this variety is low, it decreases if the yield reaches a maximum. Therefore, the plum must be cut regularly to rejuvenate. The variety is resistant to smallpox and plum codling moth.
The next representative is the Alyonushka variety. It was the result of pollination of the "Red Ball" and "Chinese Woman" varieties. After the selection, a low tree with a crown in the form of an inverted broom was obtained.
The fruits ripen in early August, they have an attractive appearance and excellent taste. Cracking for the berries of this variety is not typical, even if the weather turned out to be rainy. From each tree, some gardeners remove 15-20 kg of plums.
The pulp has a sour taste, the structure is dense, with a small bone.The best pollinator would be "Early-fruited" plum, but other varieties that have similar flowering times can be used.
Of the minuses of the variety, it can be noted that it is very sensitive to cold weather, susceptible to aphids, the level of keeping quality of fruits cannot be called high. But they are easy to transport, without fear of damage to the fruit.
Chinese plum "Skoroplodnaya" is a huge success with our gardeners. She has the highest yields, and the tree itself is not large.
It is also important that when propagated by a bone, it retains all the characteristics of the variety. From an adult plant, 35 kg of ripe berries can be removed. Moreover, their color, even on one tree, can range from bright yellow to scarlet.
Relatively new is the variety "Nezhenka". Compared to other varieties, its flowering is several times more beautiful. These are fruits weighing up to 35 g in the form of a ball with pulp that melts in the mouth.
To get the first harvest, you need to be patient. This will happen no sooner than in 5 years. The average yield is 30-40 kg per tree.
The next variety is Orlovskaya Dream. It can also be called a novelty of selection. It is especially appreciated for large fruits and their bright appearance. These plums are very sweet, the juice has no color, the pulp is dense.
The frost resistance of this variety is record. Gardeners note that the more fruits are tied, the smaller their size will be. Productivity - 22-25 kg from one tree.
Chinese plum "Red ball". The fruits ripen in early August, are prone to cracking. It is noted that the taste of the fruit is decent, but it cannot be called special. Productivity is average, cold resistance too. The variety is widely distributed in the Moscow region.
"Ussuriyskaya" plum refers to winter-hardy varieties, the fruiting period is extended. Fruits of different weights, there are up to 30 grams, and there are those that weigh no more than 3 grams.
This category includes several varieties at once. In particular, these are:
- "Pioneer";
- "Snow White";
- "Golden Niva" and others.
Plum Chinese "Dawn" - winter-hardy variety, with early flowering and good taste of fruits. The size of the fruit is large, the top is pointed, the color is bright red.
Variety "Top-hit" ripens late (in October), resistant to frost, large-sized fruits, very tasty. Appeared thanks to German selection and does not need pollinators. Fruiting begins 3-4 years after planting. The variety is transportable, with a high and stable yield.
There are other varieties that are successfully grown in various regions of the Russian Federation. The most famous ones are discussed above.
Agricultural technology
In most cases, the cultivation of ordinary and Chinese plums has no global differences. But in order for fruiting to be stable and plentiful, a number of features should still be taken into account:
- To place Chinese plum seedlings, you need to choose well-lit areas with protection from gusts of wind.
- In order for the plum to bear fruit well, several varieties should be planted on the site at once. They are selected according to the start of flowering. Between seedlings it is better to leave a distance of about 3 meters.
- Neutral soil is ideal, acidic soil needs to be deoxidized. To do this, add wood ash or dolomite flour to the soil.
- They dig a landing hole, the diameter of which is not less than 70 cm, the depth is 50. Drainage is required in the form of expanded clay, crushed stone, broken bricks.
- As a fertilizer, peat / humus is introduced into the pits. One such top dressing is enough for 2-3 years.Then apply superphosphate, potassium sulfate.
For planting, it is better to choose seedlings that are more than 12 months old. For an ordinary plum, the optimal planting time is spring, and for a Chinese plum, autumn. During the winter, the tree builds up and develops the root system, and in the spring it actively grows and builds up the crown.
After planting, plantings are watered for the first time after 14 days. Pour 2 buckets of water under each seedling.
In the care of culture also has its own nuances. For example, so that thin branches do not break, you need to make supports from boards. They are substituted under branches with fruits. Every year it is recommended to carry out sanitary pruning and remove all dead branches frozen over the winter, thin out the crown if it is too thick.
Before pruning, the tool is disinfected, it must also be sharp. Places of cuts close up with garden pitch. The plant copes well with drought, but if the summer is very hot, watering should be frequent, at least 10 liters per 1 m2 from the crown projection. After watering, the soil is loosened to a depth of 4-5 cm.
Most varieties of Chinese plum are resistant to frost, but it is better to hide the trunks under covering material. If possible, snow should be removed from trees so that thin branches do not break. As soon as the thaw comes, the snow from the trunks needs to be raked off so that the root neck of the plant does not warm up.
Stagnation of water for the Chinese plum is certain death. In the spring, an outflow of excess moisture should be ensured.
Tips & Tricks
Experienced gardeners and agronomists advise:
- Plant plums in late August. In the spring, the survival rate is much lower.
- Before planting, hold the seedlings in a solution of any root stimulant for a couple of hours.
- Remove any roots that have damage, and make long ones shorter.
- In the place where you plan to plant the Chinese plum, remove all weeds.
- After the snow has melted and the buds have not yet swollen, treat the trees with a 3% solution of Bordeaux mixture.
The taste of Chinese plums is slightly lower than that of ordinary homemade plums. But gardeners in different regions of the country successfully grow this fruit and are very pleased with the result. Summer residents are literally captivated by the unpretentiousness of culture and the ease of caring for it. In addition, trees in the flowering stage are simply amazing in their beauty.
