Columnar plum "Imperial": features of the variety and cultivation
Columnar fruit trees - apples, pears, plums - appeared recently. The Leader apple tree is the first variety of a columnar fruit tree, the result of a natural mutation noticed and successfully propagated by an American breeder in the 60s of the last century. Many appreciated the advantages of compact and productive trees, so columnar pears and plums were later bred in a similar way.
Variety Description
The columnar plum is distinguished by its small size, narrow pyramid-shaped, underdeveloped crown, on which very few branches grow. The crown has fruitful spears and kolchatka, bringing large and rich harvests. Despite the apparent fragility of the tree, its durable wood can withstand crops up to 12 kg. Columnar plums are classified as early-growing varieties: a planted tree brings the first harvest after 2 years. Within 6-7 years, the yield increases, then the tree brings consistently rich harvests for about 10 more years. The fruiting age of the columnar plum is 13-17 years, after which it can be just a decoration of the garden plot for a long time. Compact trees take up very little space.
"Imperial" is one of the most popular varieties of columnar plum. He won the gratitude of gardeners for the tenderness and sophistication of taste, frost resistance, unpretentiousness in care and a rich harvest. The height of the fruit-bearing tree does not exceed 1.5-2 meters, while the tree looks like a narrow pyramid. Saturated green shiny leaves of medium size with their oval shape resemble boats. The fruits are tasty, fragrant and large: each weighs about 55 grams. Plums are round in shape, with a slightly expanded base and dense skin. As a rule, they are pink-purple in color, but can also be reddish-brown. The fruits have golden yellow juicy and tender flesh.
Taste qualities plum "Imperial" tasters appreciate the highest rating. As positive qualities, they note the exquisite honey taste of fruits, a slight sour taste and the optimal ratio of sugar and acids. Plums can be eaten fresh or used to make compotes and jams. The presence of a dense skin helps to preserve the presentation of the fruit during long-term transportation.
In terms of ripening, this variety is classified as mid-season. As a rule, plums ripen by mid-August.
Landing
Planting seedlings in a temperate climate of the middle lane is recommended in the spring, and in a mild, warm climate - in the fall. It is better to use annual trees as planting material. When buying, you should pay special attention to the bark and root system. They should look healthy and not be damaged. The landing site should be well lit and protected from the winds. Moderately moist soil is more preferable. Low, flooded areas are not suitable for planting, and being near groundwater is also not recommended.
Seedlings are planted in a checkerboard pattern: 1.2 m should remain between rows, the gap between seedlings should be 0.5 m. It is necessary to pay attention that the size of the holes is twice the size of the root system.
It is useful to add a bucket of humus or compost to the soil. To prevent burns of the root system, mineral fertilizers are not recommended.
When watering, it is desirable to use a growth activator (stimulator).
Care
Cut and remove only damaged and broken branches. Cutting branches to form a crown is not required. The central conductor is shortened if it is weakened and has insufficient growth, while the top with three kidneys should be cut off. Trees require constant support, as they can bend and break under the weight of the fruit. On the eve of the arrival of winter, seedlings should be covered. If the tree blooms in the first year after planting, then the inflorescences should be cut off, since such a hasty harvest will weaken the tree.
Plum "Imperial" has abundant early flowering, which begins in early May. Flowers are only female, so a variety that acts as a pollinator is required in the garden. The recommended varieties include "Renklod Altana", "Stanley", "Blufri"
