How to plant grapes with cuttings in spring in open ground?

Many gardeners dream of growing southern grape varieties in their backyard. In recent years, this has become a possible event. Breeders have carried out a number of works aimed at obtaining new grape varieties. They managed to inoculate and force to bear fruit in different parts of the country grape vines, which previously grew only in regions with increased solar activity, by cuttings.

Procurement of material

After you have chosen the grapes that you want to plant at home, you need to cut the cuttings from the branches that bear fruit well. Cut the chibouks from the bottom upwards with a sharp knife. Branches should be long and straight without curvature. 3-4 buds are left on each cutting, and the leaves or shoots are removed using a pruner or a knife. The length of the shoot itself ranges from 30 to 50 cm.

In the event that you decide to germinate grape cuttings at home, and do not have a vineyard and a vine from which they will be cut, then cuttings can be purchased at the markets (in the areas where seedlings are sold). Be sure to pay attention to the storage conditions of the cuttings that you decide to buy. If they have been in a cold room or in the heat for a long time, then they should not be purchased.

To check the shoots for suitability for germination, it is necessary to make an incision on one of the kidneys. At the cut site, there should be a green formation on the inside of the kidney. This is proof that the branch is alive, and all metabolic processes in it are not disturbed.

Time

When autumn comes and the yellow leaves begin to fall, it is time to harvest grape cuttings in order to plant them in the ground in the spring. The preparatory stage takes a period of time from September to the second decade of October.

Sprouted cuttings or seedlings are planted in the ground in different regions of Russia in the following months:

  • in areas of the Southern Federal District (Stavropol and Krasnodar Territory) in March or April;
  • in the Central region, the time of planting grape cuttings falls on April and May;
  • in the northern corners of the country they are planted in the ground in June.

Technology

Cut cuttings must be placed in settled water in order to moisten the vine. To avoid various bacteria and diseases, it is best to treat the twigs with fungicides. After the procedure, they are dried.

In order to plant cuttings in the ground in the spring at home, they need to be placed for some time in a cool place with a low positive temperature. In every home there is such an optimal place. This is a refrigerator.

First, the shoots must be wrapped in a cloth and then covered with a film of polyethylene, folding them into a remote compartment of the refrigerator.

At the end of December or at the beginning of January, the cuttings should be taken out of their storage place and each of them should be placed in a PET bottle prepared separately for germination. In this case, the bottle is pre-cut at a height of 2/3 of its total length. Water is poured into it to a height of 2.5-3 cm and the cutting is immersed. There is the Radchevsky method, following which the cuttings are kept in water for 3 days. Then the water is drained and they are immersed in a solution of water and honey.1 tablespoon of honey is placed on a bucket of water, and each bottle with a handle is filled with this composition to the same height up to 3 cm from the base of the container.

Then the bottles are placed in a well-lit place, and the roots are waiting for the appearance. Evaporating water is added evenly throughout the entire period of shoot germination. The cuttings treated in this way germinate very quickly - within 10-14 days.

Landing features

Spring planting of grapes with chibouks in the ground begins with the transplantation of cuttings in bottles of water.

First, sprouted branches of grapes need to be planted in bottles with soil. It will be possible to plant them finally in the ground on the site after the formation of strong shoots with well-developed branches.

In order to properly plant cuttings in bottles with soil, you first need to prepare the container, soil, drainage and water for irrigation.

You can plant sprouted branches step by step as follows.

  • A drain is placed in a clean PET bottle cut in a circle at the top. It can be purchased at a specialized plant store or in the market. Drainage falls asleep at the bottom of the bottle.
  • After that, they take a container filled with earth, and with a tablespoon begin to pour the soil into a bottle with drainage. The earth in the container should be at least half of its volume.
  • When the soil is covered, carefully take the stalk with roots with your hands and place it from one bottle to another. They hold it with the left hand, and with the right they continue to fill the remaining space in the bottle with earth. After 3-4 cm remain to the top of the bottle, the earth is tamped with fingers around the handle and watered.
  • Then the soil is poured into the bottle so that 1.5-2 cm is left to the top edge of the bottle. In this way, you can plant all the grape cuttings that were previously germinated in bottles of water. The cuttings transplanted into containers with earth are left for germination.
  • Cuttings are planted in the ground when the soil is warmed up to +15 degrees Celsius to a depth of 25 cm.
  • Digging holes. In each of them, drainage in the form of pebbles is placed at the bottom. After that, a little earth is poured on them. The seedlings extracted from the cut bottles are carefully placed in holes to a height of 40 cm. At the same time, on the surface of the soil, after the hole is filled up, there should be a kidney, a shoot above it and leaves at its top. The stalk (seedling) is held with the left hand, and the earth is poured around it with the right hand until 5-7 cm remains to the ground level on the site. Then they tamp the area around the cutting with their fingers and water the landing site.
  • After watering is completed, fill the hole until it is completely filled with earth. Next, carry out the mulching of the soil around the planted cuttings. You can mulch the ground with barley. Take its seeds and sprinkle them around the seedling. Top them with a little more earth. It is recommended to mulch the soil in this way so that the root system of the grapes breathes well and develops. When the barley germinates, it is pulled out, and thin holes remain in the soil through which oxygen passes well to the roots of the cuttings. This completes the process of planting germinated cuttings in the ground.

Plant preparation

When the winter cold passes, and the soil warms up to +10 ... 15 degrees Celsius, grape cuttings sprouted in bottles are prepared for planting in open ground. The bottle is cut with scissors in several places from top to bottom to its base. This will make it possible to remove the sprouted seedling without damaging it.Before planting, the roots of the chibouks are slightly shortened by cutting them. In the future, the growth of the vine planted in the ground will accelerate.

Place and ground

Before you start planting grape cuttings in the ground, carefully select a place for planting and prepare the soil.

The area where the grapes are planned to be planted should be very well lit. Drafts and the presence of groundwater nearby are not welcome. Grape vines love space, actively grow on free plantations, so the place should be selected as far as possible from other vegetable or fruit plants. Planting grape cuttings should be carried out at a distance of at least 2.5-3 meters from them. The presence of nearby trees also negatively affects the growth of vines. Trees take nutrients from the soil with their roots, and in close proximity they will drown out the growth of cuttings.

The soil for planting grapes in the spring is prepared in the fall. For the active growth of vines, light and fertile soil is needed. Chernozem is best suited for these purposes.

Depth and distance

It is important to remember that different grape varieties require different distances between rows of vines. Grape variety and soil fertility have a huge impact on row spacing.

If the soil is saturated with nutrients, then it is likely that the planted stalk will quickly develop into a huge vine bush, which will occupy a large area.

It is believed that for successful growth, vines must be planted at a distance of 2.8-3 meters from each other.

At the same time, the aisle occupies an area from 2.5 to 3 meters.

Strongly growing grape varieties, such as "Isabella", "Lydia", should be planted at a distance between rows of up to 3.5-4 meters.Between the cuttings should be left up to two meters.

Cuttings of grape varieties that do not grow very actively, or belong to the category of undersized crops, should be planted at a distance of one meter from each other and maintain a step of 1.2-1.5 meters between rows.

Depending on how many cuttings you want to plant in the ground, and which grape variety to use as a basis, you need to determine for yourself whether you will use a trellis. The sprouted cutting needs support, for which it will catch on with the antennae for further growth.

If grape cuttings are planted not around a gazebo or wall along which they will begin to stretch upwards, but on a garden plot of several square meters, then it is best to use trellises. These are stable posts that are connected to each other by means of ropes. The ropes are pulled parallel to the ground. Making them yourself will not be difficult.

When using high-growing grape varieties, cuttings can be planted at a small distance from each other, within 1 meter.

We must not forget about the factor that for the winter the vines are dug or tilted to the ground and wrapped up. To do this, you need a place near each bush that has grown from a cutting. Planting cuttings too close together will make it difficult for them to grow and develop, and as a result, significantly reduce yields from each bush. A hole (hole) for planting a cutting in it should be dug at a level of 50 cm deep into the ground.

Fertilization

At the end of summer or early September, soil fertilization is carried out for planting grapes. Soil with acidity should be fertilized with limestone. If peat is present in the soil, then it is best to add sand to it.Potassium sulfate, humus, superphosphate are used as other fertilizers. They fertilize the soil in the proportions and volumes indicated on the packaging bags in which these substances go on sale. After fertilizing, the soil is carefully dug up and no more preparatory measures are carried out until the arrival of spring. When the cuttings are planted in the ground in the spring, the time begins to feed them.

Cuttings must be fertilized with mullein during the first half of summer until mid-July. From July 20, the soil should be fertilized with bird droppings.

If inorganic fertilizers are used, then in June they are fed with superphosphate. A solution is prepared at the rate of 200 grams of the substance per 2.5-3 liters of water.

After it is combined with a solution prepared from potassium, ammonium nitrate and boric acid. Saltpeter takes 30 grams, potassium 100 grams, acids 10 grams, and dissolve these substances in two liters of water. The solutions are then mixed.

Mixed solutions are diluted with water in a volume of 10 liters.

Such a prepared composition is sprayed with grape leaves on both sides. The procedure must be carried out in the evening or cloudy weather.

At the end of July or at the beginning of August, it is necessary to do another top dressing of the grape shoots. The solution is prepared according to the same rules as for the first time. The only difference is that ammonium nitrate is removed from the composition, and superphosphate and potassium are left at the same dosage.

Ways

There are several ways to apply fertilizer. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

  • In the spring, before planting cuttings in the ground, you can fertilize the entire area of the land selected for their planting. With this method of fertilizing the soil, the consumption of the fertilizers themselves is quite large, since the entire plantation is fertilized.
  • Fertilizing under each bush is a laborious process, but an effective method. Unlike the first method, fertilizers fall directly on the root system, and not on the soil nearby. With this method, nutrients enter only the area of the bush, and not on the weeds growing around.
  • Grape vines can be fertilized by spraying them with weak fertilizer formulations. This method is good because after a few hours the grapes receive the elements necessary for its growth and vital activity. When spraying, the amount of fertilizer used is saved. Inconvenience in carrying out work may be caused by the need to process large plantations in this way. The sprayer must be modern, allowing to process large areas of the site. When using a sprayer with a small volume of up to 1 liter, it will be difficult to manually fertilize a vineyard.

Spraying treatment should be carried out in dry weather in the early morning or evening, when there is no solar activity.

  • Fertilizers can be applied along with the water used for irrigation. Fertilizers (tuki) are immediately dissolved in water and, simultaneously with watering, the grapes are fed. With this method, nutrients are supplied to the roots of the planted cuttings with water. Fertilizers with this method are consumed in small quantities, and there is no need to purchase a sprayer for irrigation. All work is done by hand. The disadvantage of this method of processing (feeding) is that much more water is consumed than when using other methods. After watering with a solution with fertilizers, it is necessary to water all the grape chibouks again so that water with dissolved substances that have fallen on them is on the glass leaves.

Secondary watering will protect the leaves from possible burns.

Common mistakes

Beginning growers often make mistakes when planting cuttings in the ground.

Among their variety, 6 main actions can be distinguished that affect the growth and fruiting of vines.

The first mistake is that the stalk is finely planted in the ground. The main branch from which shoots grow is high above the ground. The vine, which is high above the ground, cannot be bent to the soil in the autumn and covered for the winter. Moreover, it will not be possible to dig such a vine into the ground so that it survives the winter cold. The main root, from which the branch with leaves departs, should be buried in the ground when planting below the ground level where the hole was made.

Most gardeners make the second mistake. They carry out frequent watering of the vines. Waterlogging of the soil leads to the fact that oxygen starvation begins at the roots of the cuttings. A kind of crust of earth forms on the surface of the soil, and it does not allow the roots to breathe at full strength. As a result, a frail vine grows.

Watering should be carried out 1 time in 2 weeks, but watering is very plentiful. Under each bush it is necessary to pour from 4 to 5 buckets of water.

The third violation is the failure to carry out stepsoning. Lush bushes grow from the cuttings. In the axils of the main leaves, shoots with several leaves grow. Such growths must be removed. If you do not cut off the extra branches on the main vine, then it does not receive all the vital elements. The stepchildren take away all the food from her, and the main vine branch grows with a weak shoot. In this case, it is impossible to hope for high yields of grapes.

The fourth mistake of gardeners is this. Planted grape cuttings are not treated for diseases. The most common of them include gray and white rot, mildew, anthracnose. Anthracnose, for example, destroys foliage, the shoots themselves, affects the berries.

In particular, anthracnose is treated with drugs such as Thanos, Antrakol, Kuproksat and other compounds.

Grape bushes need to be covered for the winter. This is the fifth mistake of gardeners. The vines freeze from low temperatures, and frostbite occurs. The likelihood that in the spring there will be no rot on such branches, or they will simply become dry, having lost their ability to bear fruit, is very high. Therefore, it is recommended to untie and bend the branches tied up during the summer with the advent of cold weather to the ground. You can cover the vines with soil by 15 cm. This will protect them from frost. Bent branches should be wrapped in paper and tied or covered with a cloth.

Mistake number six lies in the fact that gardeners do not pay attention to the number of growing branches. At the time of growth of the cuttings, branches are formed from which vines grow. On one emerging bush of branches there should be no more than two pieces. Many do not carry out operations to remove excess shoots, leaving them up to 5 or 6 units. It turns out a lush, but frail bush. Growing branches take nutrients from each other and thus prevent the growth of neighboring shoots. The vine grows weak, and there will be few grape bunches on such bushes when the crop ripens.

    gardening tips

Most experienced growers recommend that beginner growers choose cuttings from the most common and highly adaptable grape varieties to plant. These include "Arcadia", "Isabella", "Moldova" or "Lydia".

These varieties are not susceptible to diseases and are suitable for almost all climatic regions. Cuttings or seedlings quickly grow and turn into bushes that give generous harvests.

Vine branches are recommended to be planted towards the south side of your site. Any kind of fence, such as a fence or mesh, a house wall or a wooden arbor, will become a favorite place for grapes. He will be able to securely fasten his antennae on the supports and thereby grow quickly.

Pruning of vines in autumn is carried out in accordance with the rules. Shoots need no more than three. Two of them make long sprouts. Up to eight buds should be left on them for fruiting in the future. The third shoot is cut short. Kidneys on it should be 2-3 pieces. A year later, a short vine has its own shoots. In the coming year, 3 shoots from the total number are also left on a short shoot, and the rest are cut off. In this way, a beautiful bush with a high-yielding vine is formed.

Caring for planted grape cuttings includes timely loosening of the soil after watering, fertilizing plants and wrapping them up for the cold season.

Planting a grape culture through cuttings is not difficult at all. The main thing is to prepare and store them correctly, then plant them in bottles, and in the spring transfer the seedlings to a permanent place in the ground.

Proper care of them will allow you to grow large grape bushes with a long vine from small cuttings. They will delight you with high yields for many years.
