How to propagate grapes?
Many gardeners often have the question of propagating grapes. I would like to develop my own and get long vines and large clusters of berries. The easiest way, and therefore the most popular, is the method of planting cuttings. For many, this is an option of the “I’ll try, it’s good if it works out” type. This is because there are many cuttings and it seems that planting them is very simple. But in this article, we will look at how to actually work with cuttings correctly. And also learn other options for the propagation of grapes.
Vegetative way
The first method (vegetative) refers precisely to seedlings by cuttings. Usually gardeners perform this procedure in spring or autumn. The essence of vegetative propagation of culture is the planting of prepared cut branches. Let's break down each step of preparing the vine in detail.
- Branches are cut in early spring or late autumn. Of course, it is better to do this after the crop has ripened, but before frost. Then the life cycle of the plant before the "winter hibernation" is already over, so you will not bring much harm to the shrub. The grape itself, which will be used for uterine purposes, must be strong and not affected by diseases.
- The segments should be quite long, up to about 70 cm. They should have about 4-5 buds at least, so the new plant will take root well. It is also better to choose straight or relatively straight vines for ease of planting and development. Do not choose too thick or, conversely, thin areas, as they do not take root well.Use cuttings without leaves and tendrils, cut them at an angle.
- Immediately after pruning, it is necessary to place the cuttings in a special disinfectant solution of vitriol (5% concentration). This is done so that future bushes endure storage well.
- When the cuttings are dry, tie them together in 8-10 pieces. You can attach a note with the name of the variety to the bundles, if you have several of them, then in the spring you will not get confused. Next, wrap the bundle in a damp cloth and plastic wrap.
- In this form, cuttings can be stored all winter. For a small number of bundles, a refrigerator is a good place to store them, but not a freezer. In large quantities, blanks are conveniently stored in the cellar. Also, many summer residents dig segments into the ground. The main thing is to provide the seedlings with a cool, dark place. This is done so that it does not begin to develop ahead of time and successfully “overwinter”.
But wherever you store the cuttings, you need to periodically check them, optimizing the temperature and humidity. The main thing is that the kidneys do not dry out or, on the contrary, do not open. Otherwise, all your hard work will be in vain. In early spring, take out your ligaments and check their health first. To do this, cut off a couple of centimeters from the handle. If the vine inside is light green, then everything is fine, it can be used. If the color is brown or a lot of moisture is released, then the stalk has deteriorated and is rotten.
Place the seedlings in the growth-stimulating root solution for 16-18 hours, when they are ready to plant and root. Before that, make deep cuts of 4 cm at the end.
For beginners, it is recommended to first germinate the shoots in cups.
Segments are planted in a mixture of humus and soddy soil.And in the container, make several holes at the bottom to receive moisture. Use a tray for watering. In general, warm and comfortable conditions need to be created for the developing root system, but this will not be needed for the rest. Roots germinate for about three weeks before planting in open ground.
So, the last stage is planting cuttings on the site. Usually the procedure begins in mid-May, when the cold frosts are already behind. Hole diameter - 10 cm, covering the root with earth, pour it abundantly. Immediately next to it, you can drive in a support to strengthen the developing shrub. By following all these rules, you will achieve rapid reproduction of grapes. The main thing is to remember that even such a simple vegetative method requires a lot of effort, so it should not be left to chance.
Receiving withdrawals
The second method, which is also quite simple in action, is the propagation of grapes by layering. The best time for this procedure is early spring. It is during this period that the shrub begins to rapidly grow the vine. There are young shoots that we need. The essence of the method is to dig them into the ground. There are several classifications of such breeding, so before planting it is important to understand each of them in order to find a suitable solution.
Underground way
This option is famous for its high level of survival and the ability to root the shoot. For cuttings, a strong and healthy bush with high yields is selected. The location of the bush also matters, it is necessary that it grows in a place free from other plants, but not far from other vine bushes. In the spring, forming a bush and cutting off unnecessary, leave a few young vines at the base.Already closer to summer, when the vines grow up to two meters and gain strength, you can dig them in. To do this, it is correct to dig trenches around the grapes in the form of an arc. The width is approximately 50 cm and the slope should be up to 45 degrees. The angle is directed towards the main bush.
Fertilizers are placed in the trench, and the selected shoot is on top. Everything is covered with earth and watered abundantly. Leave the top above the ground. Thus, the part that is in the ground will begin to take root, and the top will grow and develop. During the first months, you should regularly water and weed the branch for uniform growth of the shoot. And in the future, guide the new grapes with props so that a beautiful bush is formed as a result.
Perennial layering option
The next method differs from the first one by using a well-developed shoot. It will require not a trench, but a small ditch, since it is necessary to transplant a well-grown process. To do this, you need to tie several seedlings with wire and transplant them together. When the vine takes root, closer to autumn it can be separated from the mother bush and grown as a separate plant.
spring method
This last method is only suitable for compactly formed vine bushes. For him, the plant is heavily spudded in the spring, leaving small shoots above ground level. And in the fall they dig up and separate the vines from each other. With the correct and accurate division of the bush, you will immediately get several separately growing bushes.
Another important tip, if you decide to propagate grapes for the winter, it is important to insulate a still fragile plant before the cold weather. For this, a method of covering it with a vine is suitable, since it effectively retains heat without harming the bush.
The field of horticulture is constantly evolving, there are more and more new ways to quickly and efficiently propagate grapes, depending on the region and crop variety. However, in any method, the main thing is the right planting time, so that new vines do not rot in rain or frost. In addition, it is important to fertilize and water the shoots regularly.
Features of propagation by seeds
So, the extreme option is the propagation of culture by seeds. Yes, grapes can be grown not only from seedlings, but also from seeds. It is quite possible to achieve success even at home. Basically, this method is used for breeding - breeding new varieties and hybrids of grapes. Also, the method is suitable if in the future the seedling will be used only for decorative purposes. A significant disadvantage of this option is the long growing period.
In the case of layering, you have an immediately formed bush or vine on your hands, but the seed needs to be germinated for a long time. Therefore, it is less stress-resistant and requires careful maintenance. The second disadvantage is that when using grape seeds, a new plant does not always fully retain the properties of the parent variety. This is not always the desired result of the gardener.
But if you decide to use this particular method to propagate grapes, then follow these recommendations.
- Choose large and ripe berries. Rinse and soak the seeds for a couple of hours, and then select healthy bones and place them in a disinfecting and stimulating solution.
- Next, place the selected material for several weeks in the refrigerator. The optimum temperature is from 0 to -3 degrees. This process is called stratification, that is, the process of simulating winter conditions for a crop.Thanks to this, the germination of seeds will increase and the growth of new grapes will accelerate.
- After artificial cooling, put the seeds on a damp cloth and leave in a warm place. After a few days, you will notice small roots starting to emerge from the seeds. It's time for sowing.
- Start planting in containers at the beginning of winter. Then, during the "winter-spring" period, the seed will get stronger and grow enough to propagate the grapes already in the open field.
- Pour a mixture of soil, sand and humus into a germination vase. The depth of the hole should be about 1 meter. At home, grapes grow well in long-term sunlight. That is, on the windowsills, this place is on the south side. Abundant watering is required, and at the very beginning, to retain moisture, cover the container with a film. If we talk about the temperature regime, then the most effective is from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Then the first shoots will appear in a week.
- With good development and favorable conditions, the plant will quickly increase in size. So that it is not crowded, regularly transplant the grapes into large containers.
- Grapes are planted in open ground in July, and before that, “hardening” is carried out. 5-6 days before breeding on the site, you need to expose your seedlings to the street, avoiding drafts. In this way, you can significantly strengthen the "immune system" of the shoot and facilitate the process of rooting and propagation of grapes.
- The transplant procedure itself differs little from other methods. Here care is needed in execution so as not to damage the root system, and careful care.
Recommendations
Propagating grapes is not the most difficult thing. This culture grows willingly, but to get the best result, you still have to work hard. There are a few more general tips or rules:
- in addition to watering and fertilizing, grapes require well-loosened soil;
- do not forget to spray the shrubs with antifungal and antiparasitic drugs;
- tie and guide the vines of new grapes from the very beginning to effectively control the direction of growth of the plant and form shrubs;
- much depends on climatic conditions, so it is important to choose the right time for planting or cutting the grape crop.
Don't expect quick results. Most likely, you will receive the first harvest from a new vine only in a few years, but if you do everything right, the result will exceed all expectations.
