Grapes "Alice": characteristics of the variety and cultivation
Grapes are a favorite crop of gardeners in the southern regions of Russia, because the warm climate favors its cultivation. In order to improve the quality of the fruit and simplify the care of the crop, new varieties are constantly being developed. Among the relatively new varieties, the Alice grape stands out. It is still little known, but is steadily gaining popularity.
Detailed description
The table grape variety "Alisa" was bred by the Don farmer and amateur breeder Vasily Ulyanovich Kapelyushny, who became famous for his developments and numerous awards. "Alisa" was created on the basis of the varieties "Kriulyansky" and "Talisman". These red and green varieties have formed a hybrid form of table grapes, which is characterized by fertility and resistance to adverse environmental conditions.
The fruits of grapes at the beginning of ripening are painted in a pink hue. Dark burgundy, dark red or purple berries acquire at the end. They are also covered with a dense prune coating. Pruine is a wax-based substance that preserves berries from mechanical damage, excessive evaporation of moisture, pathogenic bacteria and other microorganisms.
At the same time, the skin of the fruit is soft, imperceptible during meals, but durable. With large sizes and weight, the berries rarely burst or crack, so they can hang on the bush for a very long time. The pulp is distinguished by a dense structure and a pleasant sweetish taste due to the fact that this hybrid variety accumulates sugar well. The average size of berries is 35x30 mm, weight is 12-18 grams, shape is ovoid or oval.
Fruitfulness
From the variety "Criuliansky", bred in Moldova, "Alisa" received resistance to cold, common grape diseases and a red tint of berries. Also, apparently due to his genes, the new variety forms vigorous bushes with huge clusters, which can produce high yields. Clusters of grapes "Alice" can reach 1 kilogram.
At the same time, their number on one bush is large, so it is necessary to ensure that during the fruitful season the plant does not bend or break under such a load.
Favorable growing conditions
This variety is resistant to frost (withstands up to -25 ° C), so it can be grown not only in the original "grape" regions of the Kuban and Krasnodar, but also in more northern territories. Alice grape cuttings take root very well, rarely causing any problems. Under favorable conditions, fruit ripening begins after three months. At the first fruiting, the number and size of berries may be small, because the bushes are not yet strong enough. However, the yield from the very beginning is consistently high.
It greatly simplifies the cultivation of this variety that many traditional vineyard diseases do not apply to it. The main enemies of the crop are gray rot, oidium, mildew. The resistance of "Alice" to them is estimated at 2-2.5 points. This saves gardeners the time and money often spent treating plants for such disasters, as well as avoiding the risk of chemicals getting into the final product.
However, due to very large bunches, it is imperative to take care of props or other supporting devices.Even if the plant does not break under the load of berries during fruiting, it can weaken, which is why it will produce much less next season. In order to avoid this, special trellises are used in the vineyards - they not only support the bunches, but also provide the berries with maximum access to sunlight, which affects their ripening speed and taste.
Be sure to prune the bushes so that there is no overabundance of fruit shoots. Optimal pruning - 6-8 eyes per shoot and 35-40 buds per bush. This variety can and should be grafted, it is well compatible with most rootstocks. "Kober 5BB", for example, can give one and a half times more yield.
Breeders also recommend rootstocks such as 101-14, CO4, Ferkal, etc.
In the southern regions, the Alice variety does not require shelter for the winter season, however, in areas located north of the Kuban, this should be taken care of, despite the declared resistance of the variety to frost. This is especially necessary if the climate involves an uneven decrease in temperature. Even native northern plants often die from sudden changes and sudden changes in thaw and freezing, which have become a frequent occurrence in central Russia in recent years.
Reviews
The variety has not yet received proper distribution. In order for the conclusions about the quality of grapes to be as objective as possible, several years of cultivation under certain conditions are necessary. However, already now reviews of the Alice variety are mostly positive.
First of all, many gardeners and breeders note an almost perfect balance between the accumulation of sugar and acidity in fruits, which gives a pleasant, “no frills, but harmonious” taste of berries and allows you to make good table wine from them. The variety is very well pollinated. However, it was noted that in a slightly colder area than the Black Sea coast, the culture can begin to bear fruit only by the end of August - the beginning of September, that is, later than the stated date.
Another important advantage of the variety is its good transportability. Many confirm that the really thin but strong skin of the berries allows these grapes to be transported without the risk of damaging them. At the same time, the fruits completely retain their presentation.
