Grapes "Amur": varieties, planting and care
Such a diverse culture as grapes can be used in different ways. You can enjoy its beautiful berries or use it for decorative purposes, as is done in the south, or you can combine both. The grape variety "Amur" is perfect for this. It is widely distributed in the east of Russia, as well as in Asian countries such as China and South Korea.
Grapes "Amur" - these are special varieties obtained in the course of stubborn selection. They combine a number of advantages, thanks to which they stand apart from other varieties. The main thing is that these are unpretentious plants created for growing in the north. This is their uniqueness.
The famous Russian scientist Michurin was the first to work on this species, who derived the following from wild varieties:
- "Taiga";
- "Siberian fruitful";
- "Oriental";
- "Boar big".
Then by crossing he got 3 more:
- "Russian concord";
- "Metal";
- "Buytur".
Ivan Vladimirovich worked together with experienced gardeners. Ivan Pavlovich Potapenko was one of them. He was very knowledgeable about grapes, and his sons continued his work. Potapenko became the creator of the described species and received about 20 of them. Varieties of "Amur" grapes, according to the classification, were included in the plants of the Vitis group.
Characteristic
The appearance of this plant resembles a powerful vine, its diameter is about 20 centimeters. The fruits are kept in clusters.It tightly braids any surface and rises to an impressive height - up to 30 meters. The shoots of this plant develop incredibly quickly and can grow up to two and a half meters in a year. This grape can be transplanted and pruned without any problems. In addition, its temperature unpretentiousness makes it so popular: it can survive at -40 degrees.
Liana is distinguished by dark bark on old and green or red on young shoots. In autumn, it acquires a red-brown hue, like leaves, which can be up to 30 centimeters wide. In shape, they are elongated-oval, round or form a vault at the base. The most beautiful "Amur" grapes in autumn: then its large leaves are filled with colors and look great next to large dark fruits. From the beginning of May, flowering begins. Flowers give nectar in large quantities, their smell is rather subtle.
Shoots grow up to two and a half meters in a year. "Amursky" grows well and is therefore used for decorative decoration in squares and parks, since it is able to endure not the best environmental conditions in the city. He is not afraid of car exhaust, dust and smoke.
The berries of "Amur" are round and quite large, up to one and a half centimeters in diameter. They ripen closer to the second half of September. The skin is thick with a black-bluish coating. The taste is sour or sweet, it depends on the variety, the pulp is juicy. The average weight of a bunch is from 200 to 700 grams. Berries make excellent compotes and jams, of course, they can be consumed fresh. An analogue of coffee is prepared from seeds. Plants are most often of the same sex.
You can propagate grapes in all possible ways: with the help of cuttings, seeds or taps.Before that, you need to do a stratification. This process takes about four months.
The grapes will begin to bloom in the 5th year, and this will require proper care. "Amur" grapes require a large amount of moisture: about 700 millimeters of precipitation per year.
If they are not enough, then it is necessary to ensure regular watering. The variety is resistant to some diseases, but not to phylloxera. Only some forms are immune to mildew.
The following positive qualities of "Amur" grapes can be distinguished:
- all varieties bear fruit profusely;
- the vine ripens with the harvest;
- high frost resistance and plasticity;
- creepers are strong and withstand heavy loads;
- the amount of the crop does not decrease with time;
- pleasant taste, due to which juices and wine can be made from these varieties.
Propagation by vegetative means greatly accelerates the appearance of the crop.
Healing properties
It should be noted right away that grapes are rich in vitamins. In addition, it contains such useful trace elements as:
- calcium;
- zinc;
- boron;
- iodine;
- phosphorus;
- magnesium;
- iron.
"Amur" grapes contain phytohormones that are vital for human health. That is why it can be considered a medicine. The fact is that with aging, immunity is weakened, which makes the digestive, central nervous and cardiovascular systems more susceptible to disorders. "Amur" grapes contain the phytohormone resveratrol, which restores the body's defenses. It is grown during frosts, which contributes to the accumulation of this hormone in the berries.
Accordingly, from the "Amur" grapes an excellent wine with healing properties is obtained. Callus, that is, stem cells of grape cuttings, contain phytohormones in excess.According to doctors, there is as much resveratrol in one teaspoon of callus as in 20 bottles of wine.
To prepare a medicinal tincture, you will need cuttings. The recipe for its preparation:
- cut the bark in different places, then moisten a cloth, wrap the ends of the cuttings in it and wrap it with cellophane;
- after three weeks, callus will appear, which looks like white influxes. Clean it up and dry it;
- use a coffee grinder to grind to a powdery consistency;
- one teaspoon of powder, pour 50 ml of vodka and insist for 14 days;
- take tincture one teaspoon before or after meals, diluted with warm water.
However, in order to get the right dose of resveratrol, it is not even necessary to drink wine, especially since you will have to drink a lot of it and you need to do it every day.
cultivation
In any description of the Amur variety, it is said that it is unpretentious, sophisticated care is not required from the gardener. It grows well in any soil, but acidic soil works best. Propagated by "Amur" cuttings and seeds, but the first option is more effective. The gap between the pits should be at least one meter, as the bushes grow strongly. Special fertilizers are not required, only phosphorus and potassium when planting in the soil. Due to its frost resistance, this grape variety can grow not in the warmest regions, such as the Moscow region and Siberia.
You can plant wild plants, which are better grafted onto the stem of the "Amur" variety. This will make the berries larger and sweeter due to the high sugar content. Wild shrubs are well cultivated even without crossing. You just need to properly care for the vine: pinch, thin out and cut the buds. The Vitis Amuretis variety is dioecious, with males and females.Female flowers can be pollinated with pollen from any other variety, which will make the fruits larger and sugarier.
When choosing a planting site, try to place the shrub under the sun so that it receives enough ultraviolet during the day. Penumbra is also acceptable. For planting, it is better to use seedlings, as the seeds will germinate for several years.
A suitable time for landing is the second half of October. Loose and highly acidic soils are best for it. Beware of excess lime in the soil, as this can kill the bush.
Water the planting abundantly, then the first rudiments will quickly be taken from the seeds. Liana grows well on drained soil, especially in the presence of strongly acidic peat in a hole prepared for a bush. Add three hundred grams of superphosphate and 100 grams of potassium sulfate to the well. Fill the hole with manure and compost.
Since the "Amur" variety quickly and tightly wraps around any supports, do not plant it directly under the house and next to other fruit trees. Buy one male and several female varieties to plant.
The variety requires a pollinator, because in the absence of one, you will get fruits without seeds. This is true only for the wild-growing species of the vine. Seedlings of other varieties will be infertile.
After planting for two years, fertilize shrubs with nitrogen in spring, phosphorus in autumn, and combined fertilizers in summer. This is a guarantee of high yields and good survival of the plant.
Watering is one of the most important components of good plant growth. The vine requires about 700 mm of precipitation per year. If they are not enough, then compensate them yourself. Water better with warm water, during the dry season twice a week, under normal conditions once is enough.
Do not water the grapes during flowering.Most water is required during fruit ripening. Water the plant for the first time in the spring when the buds swell.
Helpful Hints
Try partial leaf removal while the vine is growing. One to two weeks before harvesting, remove the lower leaves that turn yellow. Thus, you will increase the sugar content of the berries due to their better airflow and illumination.
Pruning grapes in the fall. This will allow you to lose less juice in the berries in the spring. Choose fruit arrows from young shrubs in such a way that they do not touch future shoots, do not shade them.
Grapes "Amur" is considered frost-resistant, but nevertheless it is recommended to cover seedlings in the first two or three years. Accustom them to the cold gradually - each winter wrap them up later and open them earlier. Thus, they will form well, acquire optimal frost resistance, and low temperatures will not damage them.
Ignore the opinion of some "specialists" that supposedly uncovered grape varieties have increased carcinogenicity. No scientific study has confirmed this.
"Amur" grapes can be used as an ornamental plant. In autumn, it will unleash its foliage and reach the peak of its beauty.
Not everyone is thrilled with the taste of Vitis Labrusca grapes. In the course of crossing, the breeders managed not only to soften it, but also to achieve a frost resistance index of up to -40 degrees and a strong disease resistance. These are varieties such as:
- "Far Eastern";
- "Chasla Ramminga";
- "Seaside";
- "Suputinsky".
"Amur" variety is ideal for inexperienced gardeners. It perfectly adapts to any weather conditions, survives transplants, and its fruits have a great taste.Purchase seedlings in stores that give a guarantee on planting material.
Varieties
"Amur" grapes have many different subspecies.
- "The Firstborn of Cupid". A wine variety bred by the Potapenko brothers. Ripens by the end of September, which is about the average. Incredibly resistant to low temperatures, so it can grow even in winter. However, in the first year of cultivation, an unformed bush should be covered.
- "Breakthrough One". A novelty among the varieties of this grape. It has a strong liana with a diameter of about 2 cm. It ripens at the end of August, which allows it to be considered early. Fruits of a pink shade with sweet taste. Contains over 20% sugar. Odin has good immunity to diseases. From its berries you can make wines and juices, they are very tasty.
- "Voldemar". Similar in appearance to many wild varieties. Differs in a strong vine and large green leaves. The fruits themselves are small, black, ripen by the end of August.
- "Taiga". Outwardly and tastes like "One". Young bushes require shelter with plastic wrap for the winter, but in the second year they withstand colds down to -32 degrees. A high-yielding wine variety that used to be one of the wild varieties.
- "Amur Potapenko". A unique frost-resistant variety bred by Alexander Potapenko. The fruits are dark purple, rounded. Despite its unpretentiousness, so far, unfortunately, it is not widespread. The fact that this variety does not tolerate heat above +25 degrees plays a role here and therefore is not grown in warm regions. In colder and more suitable conditions for it, people do not yet have sufficient experience for its successful cultivation. High disease resistance. Ideal for wine due to its sugar content (25%).
- "Marinovsky". The berries ripen in the first half of September. Clusters up to 15 cm in size, and the berries are long and medium-sized, the skin is dark blue. Unfortunately, their taste is not the brightest and sweetest.
- "Amethyst". Bisexual vigorous plant. On one shoot 4 clusters ripen. The fruits ripen by the end of August. The berries are medium in size, round, sweet and juicy, as they contain a lot of sugar. Black skin. Fruits "Amethyst" in the second year. Immune to fungus infestation and does not attract wasps.
- "Triumph". A plant with large dark pink berries ripening in the second half of August. Great in taste. Grapes are resistant to diseases, and their yield only increases every year.
- "Agat Donskoy". Bisexual plant with the most juicy and nutritious fruits of the Amur varieties. It has excellent reviews from gardeners. Wines and juices are often made from this variety.
- "Neretinsky". It has a female flower and can be pollinated by any bisexual variety. Wine from its berries acquires a color reminiscent of chocolate. The fruits ripen in the second half of August. Due to the dense skin of the wasp, it is not affected. It bears fruit in the second year, with each season its yield increases.
- "Black frost-resistant." Tall bush. Ripens quickly, on average, in 110-130 days. The berries are dense, have a special taste, and the skin is practically not felt during use. This is a favorite variety of those who remove the seeds from the fruit while eating.
