Grapes "Lady's fingers": features and cultivation

Grapes Ladyfingers: features and cultivation

Initially, grapes were considered a wild plant, but after its cultivation, many hybrid species were bred with their own taste and growing characteristics. These varieties include grapes known since the seventeenth century, which came from Central Asia and received the "nickname" "Lady's fingers" among the people because of the elongated oval shape of the berries, which are both black and white. It is about this variety that will be discussed in our article.

Variety Description

This variety belongs to species with large clusters, which are especially large in black "Ladyfingers". Quite free and branched, fifty centimeters long and twenty-six centimeters wide, the clusters are cone-shaped. On average, their weight is half a kilogram. The variety is presented in two variations: with seeds and without them.

It should be noted that the oblong berries of the mentioned variety are not only black, but also light green and yellow-pink. In the South Asian republics, "Lady fingers" are called "Hussein white" or "Hussein black." Black, unlike white, is the largest, the weight of one berry can exceed 7 grams, and the length is more than 4 centimeters. Rich sweet taste has a slight sourness. The thin skin of the berries is slightly covered with a protective waxy coating. Thanks to the noted features, the variety fell in love with its pleasant taste, aesthetic appearance, which retains its shape for a long time without external influence.

Variety "Lady's fingers" is not only an attractive appearance, but also a storehouse of useful substances. Berries have many useful vitamins for the human body. Thanks to potassium, grapes prevent the occurrence of diseases associated with the heart. Normalizes sleep and relieves swelling. In addition, black grapes have antioxidants that prevent the appearance of malignant tumors.

Despite the numerous benefits, many limit themselves to the use of this berry due to its rather high calorie content. However, "Lady's fingers" after Kishmish has the lowest calorie content: Kishmish - 40 kcal, "Lady's fingers" - 60 kcal. The calorie content, for example, of red grapes is 69 kcal.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the variety, no doubt, is its taste, recognized by tasters as a model of true grapes. By creating the necessary conditions for the growth of the plant, you can achieve a high yield. The vine has fast regenerating properties, which allows it to form a plant without fear of destruction. Bright green three-fingered or five-fingered foliage of small forms has a slightly raised circumference. The veins on the inside of the leaf have a small pile. The flowers of the variety are bisexual, which contributes to rapid pollination.

The main disadvantage is recognized as poor frost resistance and whimsicality to climatic conditions. The variety has poor immunity to diseases, so you have to be on the alert throughout the season. In addition, he has a medium-late maturity. Because of the capriciousness of weather conditions, it is undesirable for beginner gardeners to start growing varieties.The middle zone of Russia, due to the insufficient availability of heat, will also be an unsuitable place for growing. Fruiting is also considered late: in most varieties in the third year, and "Lady's fingers" allow you to harvest only five years after planting.

Landing Rules

Before planting a variety, it is important to choose the right place. It must be sunny. You should avoid the presence of any nearby buildings, the shadow of which will block the light. Buildings or the presence of mature trees are desirable on the north side, as they are able to keep the breath of the north winds. Drafts are dangerous for young shoots. The presence of groundwater nearby will only be a plus, providing constant nourishment to the plant.

Seedlings must be immersed in the ground to a depth of about 1.5 meters. The pit needs to be filled with compost and fertilizers, including, in addition to minerals, superphosphate and nitrogen in a small amount. Both spring and autumn planting is allowed. Plants located close to each other will limit their growth, so a distance of about 0.5 meters should be left between them.

Since grapes are a liana plant, they need support (trellis). The trellis can be made of ordinary metal or wooden posts, to which the vine is tied. This type of garter is effective if the plant is young and has not reached a significant height. At a later stage of development, it would be more appropriate to organize a garter, for example, to the roof of the veranda. A rope or wire is pulled from the installed posts, along which the vine is launched. The end result is an arch with bunches of grapes hanging from the dome.

If possible, then the best option would be to land on a pergola (canopy), resembling a gazebo. Keep in mind that if your garter will be connected to wooden structures, then it must be treated with an antiseptic to prevent the appearance of rot that can kill your plant.

Care

As noted above, "Ladyfingers" is a variety that is picky about climate and care. If we compare the care of varieties with white and black berries, then white will be pickier than black. First, he is more sensitive to cold. Secondly, drafts, insufficient watering and lack of solar heat can lead to a complete loss of the crop.

In order for the yield to be high, the plant must be shaped. There is no need to be afraid to cut off the excess, since the variety is quickly restored, new shoots appear almost immediately. It is more expedient to do pruning for 15 eyes (formation between a kidney and a leaf), leaving several adult sleeves (perennial branches). Grapes are a fast growing plant, due to which inflorescences are not formed on all shoots. Uncircumcised extra shoots can waste the energy of the plant in vain. Grapes, like all other plants, will bear fruit much better if unnecessary shoots are removed, and shaded clusters that are not in contact with the vine are located at some distance from each other.

A vine is not a shrub whose top pruning gives splendor. It is important here not to harm, therefore it is better to start removing the excess vine from below, leaving shoots with two or three eyes, and arrows with 14 or 15 eyes are formed from above. This amount is due to low resistance to cold. Everything superfluous can be removed during the spring debris.It is usually a dry vine.

In "Lady's fingers" the buds located at the top give the best harvest: above the fifth eye. This must be taken into account in the first place when pruning.

Removing weeds, digging up the site annually and hilling the soil will have a positive effect on your plant, as it will enrich the soil with oxygen and prevent small insects from invading. Spring pruning of dried bark and vines allows you to rejuvenate your vineyard.

With proper care of an experienced gardener, "Ladyfingers" will be a decoration of the garden.

Diseases and pests

The variety is not resistant not only to sudden changes in temperature, but is also vulnerable to numerous diseases and pests. For example, in a rainy summer, accompanied by fogs, the plant, like its berries, can fester. This is the so-called mildew (downy mildew). If you see a rotting berry, then it must be removed immediately before the disease spreads to the rest. It is useful to note that ripe berries do not rot due to mildew, but become sour in taste. The disease destroys all leaves, inflorescences, which leads to a significant decrease in yield.

Heat, accompanied by high humidity, can cause the spread of oidium (powdery mildew). The disease begins to manifest itself on branches located close to the ground: gray spots of a dark shade and a moldy coating appear. Rising higher, the oidium strikes inflorescences that have not even had time to open up yet. Berries stop growing, dry out. All noted troubles are accompanied by a specific smell of rot.

To prevent the occurrence of rotting, it is necessary to remove dead wood for prevention in the fall.In autumn, before the onset of cold weather, it is desirable to treat the soil with iron sulfate, and in spring and summer - Bordeaux solution mixed with colloidal sulfur. It is necessary to plan the breaking of the vineyard in a well-lit and adequately ventilated place.

At the first appearance of any darkening on the leaves, it is necessary to immediately start treating the plant with a manganese solution or colloidal sulfur. The vineyard, like many plants, needs annual feeding. To develop immunity to diseases, you can enrich the plant with potassium, phosphorus and trace elements.

In addition to diseases, the vineyard can be vulnerable to birds and insects, for protection against which the following methods will be good:

  • wind "repellers" (the presence of sound effects will only be a plus);
  • structures towering above the plant, pasted over with a mirror;
  • a thin net that wraps around the dome.

To scare away wasps, traps are used in the form of containers with honey water dispersed throughout the vineyard. The solution is prepared at the rate of one teaspoon of honey per liter of water.

Other pests that are dangerous for the Ladyfingers variety include ticks and aphids. An abundant amount of the latter leads to the occurrence of such a disease as phylloxera. Leafy phylloxera manifests itself in the manifestation of warty formations on the lower part of the leaf. The most dangerous is the root phylloxera, which, firstly, is difficult to miss in time, and, secondly, it can completely ruin the plant. After a neglected form of phylloxera, it is difficult to grow grapes in a diseased area for twenty years.

Colorado beetles, leafhoppers, leafworms, thrips cause a lot of trouble and trouble, but they are larger than aphids, so they are easily recognizable, which allows you to start the fight on time. To destroy these pests, irrigation is used with various preparations: Aktara, Karate, Aktellik and others (a full consultation can be obtained in agricultural stores).

It is important to know that spraying for treatment is carried out much more often than for prevention. But in both the first and second cases, they must be stopped three weeks before harvest.

Reviews

According to gardeners and experts, the external signs and taste of the variety are, of course, attractive. But "Lady's fingers" are whimsical to weather conditions and transportation. Attractive forms are preserved with a sufficient number of sunny days in the summer. If the summer turned out to be rainy and cold, then the berries that appear with difficulty can crack. Mold often appears at the site of cracks.

This is not to say that for a good harvest, the variety needs only sunlight. Lack of moisture can also destroy the future crop in the bud. Thus, in the hot summer it is necessary to provide regular and plentiful watering. Due to the certain fragility of the variety, it is quite difficult to transport it. Having a weak comb (the thread that connects the berry and the brush), the berries do not stick in clusters. Their loose skin is also easily deformed. If you are not interested in large-scale deliveries, then for your own enjoyment, breeding "Ladyfingers" is very much justified.
