Muscat grape varieties: features, planting and care
Grapes are grown for different purposes: fresh or canned consumption, sale, making wine. In the latter case, it is recommended to pay attention to nutmeg varieties. The berries of this subgroup are distinguished by an exquisite aroma of musk and are used both for winemaking and for fresh consumption. Muscat grapes are grown in many countries of the world: in Spain, Italy, Moldova, Hungary and others.
History and description
The Muscat grape was known even among the inhabitants of Ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome, and the French awarded it the name. In 1828, the inhabitants of the Crimean peninsula also got acquainted with this variety. Today, this berry is mainly used for winemaking - it turns out a very original drink with a tart nutmeg taste and delicate aroma. It underlies such well-known wines as Asti (Italy), Massandra (Crimea), Orange (USA), Baume-de-Veniz (France).
The taste of this variety is quite unusual due to the presence in the peel and pulp of special compounds called ternopoids. In berries, you can also find phytoncides that improve the state of the intestinal microflora and the cardiovascular system. However, this variety does not respond well to low temperatures and is not able to independently protect itself from fungal diseases. This greatly complicates the process of growing "Muscat" in the open field.
Breeders all over the world are constantly working, bringing out new nutmeg varieties that demonstrate the best characteristics, but do not lose their amazing taste and aroma. These include the early "Red", the well-known "White", "Amber", "Italy" and others.
Varieties
Muscat subspecies "White" is common in European countries with a mild climate, as the berry requires enough sunlight and clay soil interspersed with pebbles. Very often this variety is planted on rocky slopes. Clusters of grapes are shaped like a cylinder, and their weight varies from 120 to 400 grams. The small, waxy berries are very sweet due to their high sugar content. The delicate texture of the pulp, a delicate smell, a rounded shape that is pleasing to the eye explain the popularity of this species.
The yield of "Bely" is satisfactory (from 60 to 100 centners per hectare), and the fruits are removed from the branches at the end of the first autumn month, allowing them to accumulate more sugar. The plant itself develops quite quickly, but the berries ripen within four months.
Among the features of the care of this variety, we should mention the need for potassium-based fertilizers, providing protection from spring cold snaps, as well as the readiness to resist spider mites and phylloxera.
This variety is not susceptible to fungal infections.
"Novoshakhtinsky" variety comes from Russia. Its undoubted advantages include early ripening (100 days) and high frost resistance (down to -24 degrees). The weight of a bunch of grapes reaches 600 grams, and one berry weighs approximately 10 grams. A thick red-violet hue, crisp flesh, thin, imperceptible peel explain why this subspecies is usually consumed fresh.The taste of berries is traditional nutmeg with the addition of notes of caramel.
The plant has an abundant yield. The fruits themselves tolerate long-term storage on vines and transportation without problems. However, Novoshakhtinsky requires sufficient lighting, protection from the wind and black soil with neutral acidity (this indicator can be adjusted by adding lime or ash). Usually the plant is planted in the spring with seedlings or cuttings. Holes are dug with a gap of 5 meters and the addition of drainage to the bottom. Care for this variety is pretty standard: watering, fertilizing, pest control and disease prevention, as well as loosening the earth.
The subspecies "Blau" was bred in Switzerland. It is characterized by early ripening, very high frost resistance (withstands cold down to -30 degrees) and medium immunity. Reviews also indicate that this variety too often becomes a "target" for wasps. The clusters are small (their weight is 300 grams), and the weight of one black round berry reaches 5 grams. Despite the average yield, it is Blau that is used to make red muscat wines.
The innate immunity of this grape regarding the fungus, and the ability to resist mildew, are also pleasing. It should also be mentioned that "Blau" does not require bright light rays, so it is quite possible to plant it in a shady area.
However, the plant cannot cope with the situation when the vine is overloaded with berries - both taste and quality deteriorate. In this case, the fruits will have to be rationed.
The "Pink" variety, also known as "Red", is considered a variation of the "White" variety. It is quite popular and is planted in all countries involved in winemaking.The bunch is a cylinder and consists of dense rows of round, dense red berries. This subspecies can be immediately identified by a strong nutmeg smell and a dense wax coating. Grapes "Pink" does not tolerate cold well, but perceives low-quality soils much more loyally. It is often exposed to downy mildew and is susceptible to downy mildew.
Grapes "Black" are often grown in the Crimea and in the southern regions of France - he loves warmth. The clusters are small, but quite heavy - their weight reaches 800 grams. Berries have an unusual bluish tint and a thin waxy layer. They are round, dense and juicy. The composition contains a large amount of sugar, so this variety is selected for processing into raisins.
"Black" is quite resistant to most diseases, but is subject to leaf rolling and is afraid of the cold. The composition of the soil and the amount of moisture in it are also important.
"Hamburg" is a versatile table variety that is distributed throughout the world and has won the hearts of even US farmers. The clusters are large, conical in shape and rather loose. Their weight varies from 150 to 250 grams. The berries are large, painted blue with purple tints and covered with a dense layer of wax. This subspecies is afraid of most diseases, loves warmth and, like the Black, is demanding on the condition of the soil.
The early variety "Summer" requires only 120 days for the appearance of ripened fruits from the moment of bud break. The clusters are large, reaching 700 grams in weight. Berries have a unique amber-white hue and juicy pulp. The weight of one fruit is about 8 grams. The variety copes well with low temperatures, tolerates transportation well and is not afraid of mildew.
"Super early red" was bred by specialists from Moldova. It ripens after 100 days, which is considered a very early date, so already in the middle of summer, gardeners begin to enjoy the harvest. A bunch weighs from 300 to 600 grams, and one berry weighs about 5 grams. The color of the fruit is rich red with a purple tint. The taste is very pleasant, and the pulp is crispy.
In addition to the above varieties, the varieties "Amber", "Dievskiy", "Noble", "Moskovsky", "Crystal" and "Italy" are recognized at the world level.
Growing advice
The main advice regarding the cultivation of Muscat grape varieties is the choice of a region with a warm climate. Most of them do not have high frost resistance and therefore require the most comfortable climate. The soil should ideally be rocky. It is important to control the level of watering and preventive treatment against diseases to which not all subspecies have immunity.
Landing is carried out in the spring, until the kidneys wake up. The root system will be able to take root well, due to which the necessary amount of nutrients will be supplied to the shoots. If the bet was made on autumn planting, then in May we can already expect the appearance of green leaves on the shoots. It will be necessary to remove some of the earth around the seedling to provide better root heating.
Young grapes will be watered once a week, two buckets for each bush.
Do not forget about such a procedure as the normalization of shoots, that is, the removal of weak branches. By eliminating them, it will be possible to redirect nutrients to those shoots that are healthy and resilient and can produce a quality crop. Usually, the lower shoots are removed, and the upper ones are left.
It should be ensured that the remaining parts are on the outside of the bush. When the soil temperature reaches +25 degrees, mulching with straw is usually carried out, which helps prevent the soil from drying out and the emergence of weeds.
If the vineyard is large, then experts advise using drip irrigation. It is important to remember that the maximum volume of water is used during the growth stage, and then reduced so as not to make the berries watery.
It is recommended to grow grapes on a trellis or form on an arch. If there is no suitable design, then you can install an ordinary peg, but be prepared that as the grapes become heavier, they will no longer cope with their duties.
The time for processing the vine with a pruner comes in early March or September, until the cold has struck. Not only extra shoots are removed, but branches are also thinned out. Once every three weeks, under the bushes and between the rows, the earth is loosened. Preventive spraying is carried out in autumn or early spring. During all twelve months of planting, periodically viewed and checked for the quality of leaves, vines and the fruits themselves. If trouble occurs, the plant is immediately treated with insecticides or fungicides.
On the eve of the onset of cold weather, the grapes are wrapped up.
Diseases and pests
In general, the likelihood of diseases and susceptibility to insect attacks depends on the specific Muscat subspecies, therefore, each variety has its own treatment. For example, Novoshakhtinsky often suffers from chlorosis, as well as from two types of rot - black and gray. It is often attacked by a leafworm and ticks: to destroy them, it is recommended to spray the bushes twice a season with a solution of phytosporin.
The same applies to the Delight variety."Don" grapes are often spoiled by the phylloxera pest. To cope with it, the soil around the bushes is treated with sand, and the plant itself is treated with "Confidor", sold in specialized stores. Variety "Pleven" necessarily requires preventive treatment against mildew and oidium. In addition, it is often attacked by wasps, phylloxera and grapevine.
