Description and subtleties of growing the Pleven grape variety
Grapes are a very popular berry that is eaten not only raw, but also as juice, wine, salad and puree. There are many grape varieties, but early varieties are in great demand. And, despite the accelerated growth of early ripening varieties, Bulgarian grapes of the Pleven variety do not go out of fashion. He deservedly enjoys trust, as he has a lot of positive qualities.
History of occurrence
This grape variety got its name in honor of the city of Pleven, which is located in Bulgaria. For its breeding, hybridization was used using the varieties "Italy" and "Amber". Thanks to this mixture, "Pleven" has acquired qualities that distinguish it from other species. For example, it is characterized by high yield and early maturity, which is very important for plant growers. It is also interesting that Pleven itself, being a successful work of breeders, is a participant in the breeding of other grape varieties.
On the basis of "Pleven" more improved varieties were bred. Bulgarian breeders set themselves the task of creating a sustainable species that would not be afraid of low temperatures. As a result, the following varieties were obtained: "Pleven European", "Pleven Muscat", "Augustin".
The most widespread was "Augustin", better known as "Pleven Steady".It received this name due to its high resistance to cold, unpretentiousness and resistance to various diseases.
"Pleven Muscat" and "Pleven European" are also in great demand. They stand out from the rest of the varieties with large clusters and high yields. Due to the fact that they are the result of the work of breeders, their berries have an improved taste. All these species are self-pollinators, so the presence of another form is not necessary for their comfortable cultivation.
Variety Description
Grapes "Pleven" is a table variety that ripens very early. This feature allows you to harvest already in early August, while other species have a ripening period in September. It is grown mainly in the southern regions of our country, but since all regions differ in climatic conditions, they also have different ripening periods. On average, you can get the first harvest 100 days after bud break. The high yield of "Pleven" allows you to collect more than 10 kg of berries from one bush.
"Pleven" is distinguished by tall bushes and a fast-growing vine. It can be propagated in many different ways. For example, rooting lignified cuttings or grafting to other varieties. Each of these methods allows you to get almost 100% results.
When choosing "Pleven" for planting in your summer cottage, you need to understand that the bush will often have to be treated with agents that prevent the likelihood of diseases.
This variety is resistant only to gray rot, but it does not have resistance to fungal diseases. For example, it can be hit by phylloxera, so it is not worth planting "Pleven" in places where it is distributed.
As for frost resistance, the grapes can withstand temperatures down to -23C. Almost all modern table species have this ability.
Grape bushes are distinguished by an excessive number of inflorescences, therefore, in order to normalize the harvest and preserve the plant, growers regularly thin out inflorescences. Removing a few clusters does not affect the high yield in any way. But for the bush itself, removing excess inflorescences is even useful.
The flowers of the plant have both sexes, and therefore do not need a pollinator. Ripe berries can be on the bushes for almost a month, so you should not rush to harvest. The good news is that grapes can keep their fresh look even after a month in the refrigerator.
The grape clusters are of medium size, and the berries are of medium density. One bunch weighs about 250 g, but there are also 500-gram bunches. The berries are not damaged by wasps, which has a beneficial effect on the harvest.
Grapes have a slightly larger size compared to other types. They are oblong in shape and weigh about 4-5 g. They are distinguished by a yellow-green color with a slight brown tint from the direction of the sun. The berries have a thick, waxy skin. They taste juicy and crunchy with a slight hint of nutmeg.
Used grapes "Pleven" in a variety of areas. Most often it is consumed fresh, but often subjected to processing.
Planting and growing
"Pleven" is a simple agrotechnical variety that requires only regular preventive spraying. This is necessary so that the bush is not exposed to various diseases.Low disease resistance is the only minus of the plant, otherwise it is no different from other varieties.
"Pleven" must be watered frequently. And he also needs careful pruning and thinning of excess inflorescences.
This type of grape should be planted on a small hill. Despite its exacting requirements for frequent watering, it will not be able to survive being near groundwater deposits. Frequent stagnation of water after rain will also adversely affect its viability.
In order for Pleven to take root in a new place and bear fruit in the future, it needs to prepare a large feeding area. To do this, you need to prepare a planting hole with a size of at least 3x3 m, into which you need to add fertilizer. If you plan to plant several bushes, then the distance between them should be at least 2.5 m.
The landing pit does not differ in features. Its size should be approximately 75 cm2. A good drainage layer must be laid at the bottom of the pit. If the region is characterized by heavy soils, then you will have to conduct an irrigation pipe to the location of the roots of the plant.
The lower part of the pit should be covered with fertilizers, and the upper part should be filled with fertile soil.
Planting is best done in autumn. To do this, the seedling must be lowered deep into the pit, but at the same time its root system should not come into contact with fertilizers. After it is buried, the soil around it needs to be mulched and watered.
Most often, for the reproduction of "Pleven" they use grafting into a stem or vine of other plants. To perform such manipulations, it is necessary to first study the literature in order to find out which varieties will take root and which will not. "Pleven" has good compatibility with most varieties, but nevertheless there are those that do not suit him.
The vaccination itself is not particularly difficult. It can be done at any time of the year. But still, a novice grower should first practice. Grafting grapes should be the same as any other fruit trees.
Care rules
After planting a seedling for the first two years, it needs frequent watering. Feeding during this period is not necessary, since the plant has enough of those fertilizers that were poured into the pit before planting. As soon as the seedling reaches three years, it will need to be not only watered, but also fed with fertilizers. There is a special scheme for this.
- The first top dressing is carried out in the spring immediately after tying the vines. First you need to water the bushes, and then use ammonium nitrate. Once every two years, small holes must be made around the bushes, into which then humus must be poured.
- In the spring, the vine bush needs to be pruned. After a few days, around it you need to pour 2.5 liters of wood ash, and then water the plant.
- The bushes are watered especially abundantly when new shoots appear, the length of which reaches 24-28 cm.
- Before the grapes begin to bloom, it must be sprayed with a solution of mineral fertilizers.
- After the bushes have faded, the grapes are also well watered and sprayed.
- At the end of the harvest, the plant must be fertilized with superphosphate and watered abundantly.
- Before the onset of cold weather, the bushes need to be covered and, if possible, fertilized with humus.
Watering the grapes is necessary only during the drought period. The rest of the time, rainwater is enough for him.
Due to the low resistance of "Pleven" to diseases, it must be sprayed with special means.For this, a solution of ferrous sulfate, Bordeaux liquid and a modern fungicide are used, which allow you to protect the plant. Each tool can be used strictly at a certain time.
In the spring, only dried branches should be removed from vine bushes. During the growing season, only young shoots that have grown in an unnecessary place need to be removed from him. The main pruning of the plant is carried out after the leaves have completely fallen. To do this, remove small shoots, leaving shortened powerful branches.
In winter, grapes need to be warm, so they need to be covered before frost. For regions with warm winters, this is not necessary. For shelter, a spruce spruce layer or non-woven material is usually used.
Advantages and disadvantages
"Pleven" appeared quite a long time ago, therefore, against the background of young varieties, it has significant drawbacks. Its main disadvantage is its low resistance to diseases, which seriously affects its popularity. In addition, consumer reviews indicate that there are too large bones in the Pleven berries.
Despite these disadvantages, "Pleven" is distinguished by a number of positive qualities that satisfy plant breeders. These include:
- ability to adapt to weather changes;
- rapid growth of the vine and its almost complete maturation;
- the possibility of breeding varieties in different ways;
- long-term preservation of berries on the bushes;
- high yield;
- pleasant taste and aroma.
The predominance of the advantages of the variety allows you to meet it in many suburban areas. And in Bulgaria it is one of the most popular varieties.
