Grapes "Super Extra": features and cultivation

Grapes Super Extra: features and cultivation

Delicious and sweet grapes are one of the favorite types of berries for millions of people. But the quality of purchased fruits does not always meet the necessary requirements. And home-grown is always more pleasant, not to mention the fact that it is the safest product.

Variety Description

The passion for viticulture embraces an increasing number of farmers and gardeners; The popularity of this industry in the regions of risky farming is growing, breeders are trying to satisfy the demand for fruit shrubs for the Moscow region.

Among the early varieties, the Super Extra grapes, bred relatively recently, attract attention. Its creators tried to compensate as much as possible for the negative effect of a short and relatively cool summer. The initial base for the work of E. G. Pavlovsky (namely, he took the greatest part in the project) was the Talisman and Cardinal varieties.

One adult plant per season can have up to 20 kg of fruit. The shoots of past years form stepchildren, capable of producing quite a lot of berries, if cut off in the fall. The usual length of the grape reaches 35 mm, and the width is 25 mm. Initially, the berries are painted in light, sometimes golden tones with a green tint. When they ripen to the end, they acquire an amber color.

The strength of the berries and the strength of the stalk facilitates long-term storage."Super Extra" is used not only fresh, but also in homemade wines, it makes excellent jams, compotes, juices and preserves.

Advantages and disadvantages

Grapes grow not only very fast, but also strongly, fresh greens are green, and as they grow, they become closer to brown. Splitting is unusual for leaves, in any case, it is rarely strong. In most cases, the brush accounts for 0.5–0.8 kg of berries.

However, there are plants that are record-breaking in their characteristics, giving bunches up to 1.5 kg. A close analogue of this variety, judging by the reviews, is Arcadia, which has approximately the same color and size. Egg-shaped berries are elongated, one of them can weigh from 7 to 10 g.

Grapes are covered with a moderately hard shell, although it is difficult to notice the taste. The increased fortress simplifies the process of transportation. The flesh is quite juicy and fleshy, the sweetness is quite decent, the characteristics make the plant good for any locality in the Russian Federation. The main parameters are as follows:

  • achievement of technical ripeness is carried out on 95–100 days after sowing, which depends on the climate and specific weather conditions;
  • pollination of flowers has an average intensity, they are quite strong;
  • air humidity is critical;
  • brushes ripen evenly throughout the volume;
  • grapes are able to withstand temperatures down to -24 degrees, if the frost is stronger, shelter is required;
  • you can get significant and fairly stable yields.

In order for the collection to meet all the requirements, inflorescences will have to be rationed. The fruits begin to ripen in the second season. The concentration of sugar in Super Extra berries reaches 18%, and the presence of acids is limited to 5–8 g per 1 cu. m.The plant almost does not suffer from oidium and mildew. Important: the role of protection against phylloxera is great.

Weaknesses of the variety are worth noting the following:

  • inconsistency in the dimensions of the berries;
  • the likelihood of peas (although not affecting the taste);
  • rather tough skin will not be to everyone's taste;
  • phylloxera prophylaxis should be continuous, since immunity to it is not formed;
  • the likelihood of splitting the tips of the berries against the background of significant precipitation (but the good thing is that they are not subject to decay).

How to plant?

It is necessary to strictly observe the recommended gaps between individual bushes and the distance from one row to another. If you ignore these requirements, the feeding area of \u200b\u200beach bush will be insufficient, and it will not be able to develop normally. Reproduction by layering is allowed, as well as the use of a variety as a rootstock. Vaccination should be done at the end of autumn, using cuttings with 2 or 3 mature buds. Such a handle should be sharpened like a blade, and the rest of it is covered with a slight layer of paraffin.

When the cuttings are prepared, they are soaked in water and treated with a growth accelerator before being grafted. The stock is cut from above, trying to make it as even as possible vertically. The cutting must be placed inside the incision, pressed and secured with cotton cloth.

The best rootstocks are rapidly developing varieties with properties similar to Super Extra. Failure to comply with this rule may result in the loss of varietal specificity.

Reproduction by layering involves the use of strong and well-developed shoots. They are laid on the ground, pinned and covered with soil. Gradually, the plant will give roots, as soon as this happens - it can be separated from the bush and planted in a new permanent place.It is theoretically possible to grow seedlings with seeds obtained from ripe berries. But you will have to spend quite a lot of time, and there is also a risk of losing valuable characteristics of the variety. Therefore, seed propagation is practiced only occasionally, mainly to obtain good rootstocks.

Regardless of the method of dilution, it is required to introduce slaked lime or wood ash into acidic soil. Shading in the landing area should be small. Even in the coldest places, do not bring bushes closer to houses and fences by more than 1 meter. Otherwise, the nutrition of the roots will not satisfy the needs of the grapes; you will not have to rely on a large harvest of berries. Not a single weed should remain on the selected site, and its clogging with garbage is also unacceptable.

Exactly 30 days before planting the grapes, you need to dig a hole in the shape of a cube with a side of 0.8 m. If groundwater is found to approach the surface, you need to fill the bottom of the recess with expanded clay or brick battle. When planting in spring, the plants are shaded with hung agrofiber. Of course, autumn seedlings do not require such protection, but they are covered until spring even more carefully than ripe grapes. When seedlings are selected in a store (market) or selected on the site itself, it is required to check the quality of the shoots to ensure the strength of the roots.

You should not be afraid of a lack of space in the pit - a month is just enough for shrinkage. The roots should be straightened and carefully sprinkled with a fertile layer. Given its rapid growth, you will need to drive a stake. The root neck is raised above the ground by 40-50 mm, this figure must be maintained even after deepening.

The land surrounding the planted grapes must be carefully compacted with your feet and poured with 20 liters of water.

The final step when planting is to cover the watered soil with mulch. For the first 30 days after planting, seedlings need to be watered weekly. Watering is stopped when 20-25 days remain before the ripeness of the berries. Failure to comply with this rule may degrade the quality of the crop, even if all other care requirements are met. When the plant is watered, the following actions should be performed:

  • weeds are removed from the trunk circle;
  • loosen the earth;
  • cover it with mulch with a layer of 30 mm (it is made from sawdust, moss or aged humus).

Deep loosening is not required and even dangerous, since roots close to the surface can be broken.

Care

Watering

"Super Extra" - this variety is not very picky, cultivation is carried out not only in different climates, but also on almost any soil. But to improve the result, heavy clay soils need to be supplemented with humus and sand. It is recommended to select the most sunny site, especially in Siberia and the Far East, this is the only way to compensate for the shortened growing season. It is advisable to use the southeastern edges of houses or fences for planting in order to cover the seedlings from the wind and take advantage of the heat gained during daylight hours. Watering is moderate, since both its scarcity and excessive activity have a bad effect.

Overwatering leads to the following consequences:

  • reduction in the yield of berries;
  • lowering their quality;
  • the appearance of cracked fruits.

Watering the grapes during the dry period of the year is carried out 1 time in 14 days, more than 15 liters of water cannot be poured on each bush.

"Super Extra" is characterized by the rapid growth of the bush, so you have to shape it, cut it.Overflowing shoots with stepchildren significantly reduces the yield and can even mechanically overload the branches against the background of the formation of ovaries. It is recommended to cut (pinch off) and excess inflorescences. Pruning is carried out in autumn or spring, regardless of this, a maximum of 8 eyes should remain for 1 shoot. The reproduction of grapes of this variety is carried out by such classical methods as:

  • cuttings;
  • scion;
  • use of seedlings.

Bloomed grapes, as soon as the berries grow to the size of peas, get rid of the smallest clusters, each branch should have no more than 2 clusters. After the end of leaf fall, the vine is untied, removed from the support and placed on the ground. A thick shell of mulch is laid out on top of them. Spruce paws, agricultural fiber, straw, moss or peat are placed over the mulch. In the spring, only after removing all these shelters, the bush is lifted, straightened and tied to the trellises. All found lifeless and broken branches should be immediately removed from the plant.

A homemade substitute for grape growth accelerators can be a weak solution of potassium permanganate. In places with a particularly harsh climate, you need to plant Super Extra grapes exclusively in greenhouses and hotbeds. When planting in insufficiently fertile soil, humus diluted with water should be poured into the pit. Its addition is made on average 15 days before disembarkation. This technique avoids excessive concentration of fertilizers.

Watering a vineyard that has reached the age of four (and in subsequent years) needs to be done only a few times per season, at the most crucial moments in the life of the plant. Naturally, under adverse weather conditions, the frequency of watering is increased or reduced.The simplest support trellis, which is easy to make with your own hands, is a pair of metal or wood poles that are connected by several lines of wound wire.

You need to carefully tie the vines to the wire part as soon as they reach the required height. It is very important not to damage the shoots and their individual parts.

The best arrangement of plants is along the north-south axis. When a harsh winter sets in, you should not be limited to standard protection measures, but carefully cover the grapes with a layer of snow. When forming a bush, it is better to use the shape of a fan or half fan, since the care of such a plant and the maintenance of its geometry are simplified. Vertical trellises are harder to arrange than horizontal ones, but they are better suited for forming a decent crop. The initial garter is made immediately after the bush reaches a height of 0.4–0.5 m.

Attachment is usually done with strips of knitted fabric; instead, it is also permissible to take twine or twine made from natural fibers. Other types of ropes and fasteners will either be unreliable, or they will press very hard and damage parts of the plant. In the course of work, it is advisable to use a specialized tool that secures the shoots using plastic clips.

Fertilizers added during vine maturation should not contain nitrogen. It is much more correct at this moment to introduce into the ground and apply mixtures with microelements to the bush.

In places where dry days give way to rainy days, the likelihood of a fungal infection or insect invasion is high. Be sure to treat the grape planting sites with protective preparations, since the harm from them, if any, is much less than from ignoring such treatment.Until flowering, spraying with Bordeaux liquid is carried out. Fungicide treatment should be done as soon as the protective coating is removed in the spring. All spraying, no matter what preparations people use, should be carried out in dry weather, in calm, in the early morning hours.

To avoid attacks by wasps and birds, a fine mesh net is used. Adhesive tape is hung next to the berries. Sugar poison traps can be placed nearby. Additional protection will be provided by the treatment of faded ovaries with forchlorfenuron or gibberellin.

Mildew (or otherwise - downy mildew) is manifested by the formation of yellow spots, another characteristic feature is a grayish coating. In case of mildew damage, the plants should be sprayed with "Strobi", "Arceride", "Polyhom", Bordeaux liquid. The drug "Strobi" helps to cope with oidium. Acrobat MC, Thiovit and colloidal sulfur also fight well against this disease. If the grapes are affected by a bacterial infection, the infected areas will have to be removed, and sometimes entire bushes will be uprooted.

According to experienced growers, the fight against bacteria should be complemented by the treatment of shrubs with insecticides. Insects often become carriers of dangerous diseases, and are also much more likely to attack an already weakened plant. Getting rid of viral lesions is very difficult, and in most cases it is completely impossible. It is recommended to closely monitor the appearance of all plants in order to timely notice the appearance of disorders in the early phase of their development.

But it would be even better to pay attention to the prevention of various ailments, then "Super Extra" will become a real storehouse of useful berries.

top dressing

    In addition to liquid, fertilizers are also important for grapes.Feeding is required for both roots and leaves. Both types of feeding should be done repeatedly during the season. It is best when foliar nutrition of grapes is combined in time with the use of pesticides. Fertilizer rates cannot be given exactly as they are adjusted to the quality of the soil, meteorological conditions and the actual health of the vineyard. A layer of fertile soil should be poured over the drainage or on the clean bottom of the pit, to which ash, rotted (long-aged) humus and superphosphate must be mixed.

    It is recommended to start top dressing in early spring. Organic fertilizers should be replaced with mineral supplements based on potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. Top dressing for the vegetative season is done twice - just before flowering and after its completion. An ideal complex fertilizer for 3 parts of nitrogen contains 1 part of phosphorus and 2 parts of potassium. Deviation from this proportion has an extremely undesirable effect on the development of grapes.
