Black cherry: popular varieties and their characteristics

Black cherry: popular varieties and their characteristics

Recently, the cherry has been losing its position in front of its more famous and tasty relative - the sweet cherry. Most often, cherries are not as large and not as sweet, which makes them not as popular. However, there are a number of breeding varieties that are in no way inferior to cherries.

The main tree in the gardens of Russia

Cherry is not just a tree familiar to everyone, the presence of which in the garden can surprise someone. It first became known in the 11th century. The love of gardeners for this tree lies in the rather simple care and variety of varieties. All cherries are divided into two categories: moreli and amorel. Morel is a black-fruited cherry, while amorel is called varieties in which the skin of the fruit is red or light pink.

One of the most popular and common types of cherries is black and its varieties such as Vladimirskaya, Zhukovskaya, Rossoshanskaya black, Black large, Leningradskaya black, etc.

Description and characteristics

Black cherry grows in the Caucasus, in central Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova. Outwardly, it is very similar to cherries: large, with dark fleshy berries, has a sweet and sour taste.Depending on the variety of black cherry, the characteristics of fruitful trees also vary: some trees are less frost-resistant and require more care during bud formation and flowering, others are completely unpretentious and are not afraid of even severe frosts in the spring.

"Leningradskaya"

The name of this variety speaks for itself - "Leningrad" black cherry was bred in St. Petersburg. This is one of the most frost-resistant varieties of black cherries, as it was bred specifically for this region. But this does not mean that the tree will not be able to grow in other areas, because thanks to its resistance to severe frosts, it can grow even in regions where the thermometer drops to -30 ° C in winter. In addition, this species has a high level of disease resistance, which is an important aspect in choosing a variety for planting by gardeners.

The tree is quite tall, can reach 4 meters, has a voluminous, spreading crown, which must be cut, otherwise the fruits will be covered with leaves and will not be able to receive enough light and heat. This is one of the varieties, the pollinators of which can be both Leningradskaya itself and other types of cherries: Zorka, Revna. The period of fruit ripening depends on weather conditions and has a fairly long period: from mid-June to mid-July. The fruits are dark, almost black in color, but not as large as those of other types of black cherries, but no less tasty.

The berries are strong, the bone is easily taken out of them. This makes them almost ideal for making jams, jams and compotes. They are great for freezing, because after defrosting they almost do not lose their shape.

Rossoshanskaya

This variety of black cherry was bred at the Rossoshanskaya horticultural station, after which it was named. The tree is quite different from its Leningrad "brother": it is low, does not have a dense crown, although the leaves are quite large. The color of the bark depends on the age of the cherry and varies from gray to black. It has a fairly high frost resistance, but requires more care than Leningradskaya, and is more susceptible to diseases, such as coccomycosis and moniliosis.

This variety is also self-fertile, however, to increase the amount of harvested, it would be nice to plant other varieties of cherries nearby. The yield of "Rossoshskaya" black cherry is slightly lower than that of "Leningradskaya", but all the fruits ripen at the same time. The fruits overripe and fall off, after which they germinate extremely quickly, which can disrupt the root system of a large tree. Harvest starts at the end of July. The fruits are dark, fleshy, sweet and sour.

The main advantages of the fruits of this variety of cherries can be called ease of transportation, processing and storage, and most importantly - taste. What is important - this is one of the few varieties of cherries that dry well, without losing the volume and quality of the berries.

"Consumer goods"

Black cherry "Consumer goods" was bred by I. V. Michurin. However, its indicators, unfortunately, correspond to the name. It will not be possible to tell a lot about this cherry, this is not the most popular variety. She has much less pluses than minuses, so she is rarely seen in gardens. Of the positive qualities of this cherry, one can single out the taste and size of the tree. The tree is short, with a crown of medium density, which makes it easy to harvest.

But even this plus is rather a negative quality, because.the yield of the tree is extremely small, and the occupied area is equal to other high types of chokeberry types of cherries. In addition, the tree is not frost-resistant and self-fertile, so it is unlikely that anyone would want to have such a copy in their garden. Too much care will be required for him, and the result will not justify the efforts.

"Vladimirskaya"

"Vladimir" cherry is the first known variety, which was brought by the monks from Greece. This variety has come a long way of adaptation from the Greek climate and soil to growing in central Russia. The tree is simple, looks more like a bush, low, although there are specimens reaching five meters. There are few leaves on it, the tree has a spherical shape.

Due to the fact that this species has been growing in Russia and other countries for a long time, it has sufficient immunity, although its frost resistance is not as high as that of other black cherry varieties.

The tree begins to bear fruit already in the second year after planting. Berries do not have the same size, ripen in the second decade of July. The fruits are not very suitable for transportation, they are usually used for cooking jams or compotes. The taste is dominated by the sour component, but much depends on the amount of water and heat that the tree received during the ripening of the fruit. Do not forget that this tree is self-fertile, so you will have to plant cherries and other varieties for pollination nearby, for example, Pink Amorel, Turgenevka, Black Leningradskaya.

The variety is fastidious, but is popular due to its prevalence and high yield.

"Chocolate Girl"

One of the youngest varieties, which was bred just over 30 years ago.Sometimes they say that "Chocolate Girl" is the quintessence of the excellent performance of all other varieties of black cherries. The tree is low, reaches 2-2.5 meters in height, which simplifies the harvesting process. It has sprawling branches and a low density of leaves, so the yield and taste of cherries are qualitatively different from other varieties. Besides "Chocolate Girl" is a self-fertile tree that does not require other pollinating trees even to maintain the crop. If, nevertheless, there is a desire to diversify cherry trees, the best neighbors for "Chocolate Girl" will be "Vladimir" and "Leningrad" black cherries.

Unfortunately, you should not expect an early harvest from this tree. A sufficient number of fruits will appear only 3-4 years after planting. However, the wait is worth it. The berries begin to ripen in early July, the fruits are large, sweet, dark brown. The harvest, relative to the size of the tree itself, exceeds all expectations and reaches 13 kilograms per bush.

It often happens that after reading about the unpretentiousness of the "Chocolate Girl", gardeners plant this variety and do not follow the tree, and after a few years they begin to be surprised at the lack of harvest and slow growth.

Therefore, before planting this variety on your site, make sure that the place is sunny, it is possible to water and treat it from diseases that cherries can suffer from.

Opinion of gardeners

For the most part, black cherries are favorites to grow. Reviews for the varieties described in this article are almost always positive. Sometimes it happens that summer residents are mistaken in choosing the right tree for their climate, which does not give the desired result. Or, for example, to cherries that need pollinating neighbors, they are not planted, which reduces the quality and quantity of the crop.

Tips

In order to become the owner of an incredible cherry orchard, you need to make a sufficient amount of effort and knowledge both in choosing the varieties of fruitful trees themselves and in their subsequent care.

One of the main aspects is the choice of a variety that will become the main one in the garden. Here you need to take into account all factors: from global things, such as the correspondence of the variety to the region, and the proximity of the main tree to others that will be planted for pollination.

The next step after choosing a variety is planting in the ground. Only after a careful study of the time of planting a new tree should one begin to take action. If the implementation of this step is not timely or of poor quality, the tree may grow poorly or not take root at all.

Care for a new resident of the garden should be timely. Unfortunately, there is still no such cherry variety that would grow without the master's attention. And if you let this process take its course, then you should not expect a good harvest at all.

Do not neglect the treatment of trees from harmful insects and diseases typical of cherries. If treatment is not carried out, then the tree will simply die, and all the efforts and funds invested in it will be wasted. You can be afraid of chemicals and pesticides from tree processing only when the owner chooses cheap products. Today, there are a number of products on the market that are excellent tools in the fight for the harvest, safe for fruits and humans. The main thing is to have a desire and make a little effort, and the result will not be long in coming.
