When is it necessary to cut the Victoria?

When they talk about Victoria, they most often mean strawberries. This is one of the most favorite berries of both children and adults. It is a pleasure to feast on jam or pies with Victoria, but you need to try hard to get a quality harvest. After all, in order for a plant to bear fruit more and better, it is necessary not only to take care of it during the ripening of berries, but also take care of autumn cleaning and preparation for winter.

Leaf removal periods

Experienced gardeners prune the leaves at different times for better fruit preservation, pest control, and healthier strawberry bushes.

Spring

During the winter, some parts of the bushes may freeze slightly, so in the spring, when the snow has already melted and the soil has dried up, it can be seen that some sheets are damaged and dried up. They should be cut and raked. The main thing is not to overdo it so as not to remove healthy parts. Damaged sheets are best burned.

Summer

In late July or early August, after harvesting, it is necessary to start a thorough pruning of the plant, since in the remaining warm time after fruiting, the bushes have time to form new buds for berries. You can remove deformed or damaged leaves during the entire warm season so that the fungus does not spread, and the main cleaning of the leaves should be carried out towards the end of summer. It is better to do this a week after picking the last berries, but you can do it right away. Weeds and withered foliage are removed. Cut leaves should be burned, as pests or pathogens can remain on them.

Leaves and root interact within two months. And after fruiting, the bush is already gaining enough nutrients, and the leaf plates begin to turn red, which indicates that they have played their role this season and will not bring additional benefits. Then the leaves can be cut off.

Cut off only those parts that have been subjected to fungal infection or pest attack.

Although some gardeners cut off almost all the leaves, especially on plants that go to winter strong and prepared. If the bushes are young, which are still one year old, or not quite strong over the summer, then it is better not to touch them so that they still gain strength. Also, do not forget about pruning in the fall.

Autumn

It is necessary to inspect the bushes again and remove the remaining infected leaves so that the pests have nowhere to spend the winter and Victoria is well preserved during the cold weather. If the winters are very frosty, then some of the dried foliage can be left, and the bed can also be insulated with straw, mowed grass or sawdust.

    How to cut?

Leaves are cut with a sharp garden knife, secateurs or scissors in dry weather, preferably in the morning or evening. In order not to damage growth points or healthy foliage, cut the leaf at a height of at least 10 cm, and not under the root. You need to start with healthier bushes and end with weaker ones, on which damage by viruses is noticeable, so as not to transfer them, you should also wash the tools with potassium permanganate or blue vitriol for disinfection (in solution).

It is not necessary to cut off parts of the bushes with your fingers, because, without calculating the strength, you can uproot the plant or damage it. And if the root system is disturbed, the bushes can get sick or reduce the yield of berries. If the bush is badly damaged, it is better to remove it completely and burn it.In order not to infect neighboring plants, the place from the diseased bush must be poured with a solution of potassium permanganate or boiling water.

When unnecessary leaves are cut, comb the bushes with a rake. After pruning, it is better to loosen the soil. In place of the removed leaves, new ones will begin to grow, especially if the autumn is warm. It is better to cut them too, so that the plant does not waste energy on leaves instead of new berry buds.

    mustache trimming

After processing the bushes themselves, you need to take care of the mustache, which Victoria lets out during the whole summer for further reproduction. If there is no intention in the plans to propagate strawberry bushes from existing ones, then you definitely need to cut off the mustache closer to the rosette of the bush. Otherwise, all the forces of the plant will go to new bushes, and there will be few berries. You need to trim the mustache before flowering, after the bush bears fruit and at the end of summer. If you want to grow a few more bushes, then a certain amount of whiskers from the strongest plants should be left and covered with earth.

It must be said that pruning performed correctly and on time guarantees an increase in the next crop of up to 40%, so this event should not be neglected.
