How to deal with aphids on currants?
Aphids are one of the most famous and widespread pests in the garden. This type of insect parasitizes mainly on fruit and berry crops, including currant bushes. Insects breed most actively in the summer, when heat and drought sets in. In order to save the crop, the gardener must know the basic methods and rules for dealing with aphids.
Signs of defeat
On the blackcurrant bushes, in most cases, shoot gooseberry aphids settle, while red and white ones are affected by species such as red-gall and currant hairy aphids.
Signs of damage include:
- swelling and blistering on currant leaves;
- leaf curling into a tube and their further death.
The greatest probability of damage occurs with extreme heat, drought and an abundance of sunlight. After the appearance of the first individuals of aphids on currants, it is immediately necessary to begin the process of struggle, since during the summer period there is a change of up to 15 generations of harmful insects. Some individuals do not live so long.
The size of aphids fluctuates around 2 mm, but due to the large accumulation it seems that spots of various shades have formed on the currant: gray, greenish or yellow.
Food for pests is the juice of plants, which they consume from the inside of the leaf. The appearance of aphids robs cultures of vitality, destroys them.All this steadily leads to a decrease in the yield of this crop.
There is an opinion that ant colonies are helpers in the eviction of aphids. But this judgment is erroneous, they only feed on the waste products of harmful insects - honeydew or honeydew. As a result, ants even help harmful insects to become even more numerous, transferring them to nearby bushes.
That is why it is necessary to fight not only with aphid colonies, but also at the same time begin to destroy anthills in the garden.
Treatment
Fungal lesions on currants are formed due to the fact that gall aphids feed on the juice of currant leaves, digging into them from the wrong side.
There are many ways to avoid the defeat of currants as a result of the settlement of aphids on it. The choice of method depends on the degree of damage to the plant, the stage of its growth (initial, flowering, fruiting).
In the event that a small number of bushes are infected, and the insects did not have time to breed too much, it is better to use folk methods and mechanical methods for removing pests. Making infusions from natural remedies is much safer for the human body, and they are also easy to prepare and use (just spray on the bushes from a spray bottle). Mechanical methods, on the other hand, suggest that you just need to manually remove the insects and remove the affected parts of the plant. These methods are also applicable at the stage of flowering and the appearance of the first berries (usually in June).
Chemical methods are suitable in cases where a large number of plants have been invaded by aphids and it becomes more difficult to destroy its settlements.
Folk remedies
In the fight against aphid colonies, folk methods and means are widely used.At the moment, they have already accumulated a fairly large number, and they are very effective. So, subject to all the rules for the use of folk recipes, it is quite possible to do without chemicals.
Laundry soap has long been widely used in the activities of gardeners. To combat aphids, prepare a solution in water, after grinding the soap. The chips are mixed in a glass with a small amount of liquid until a thick mass is formed, then it is poured into a bucket of water. Then currant bushes are treated with the resulting mixture. For this, a regular broom or special devices are used.
In this solution, you can add a glass of the mixture with ash, but it must first be insisted for at least a day.
Tobacco dust has the most effective effect when mixed with ash. Each element is taken in a dosage of 400 g per bucket of water. Then the solution is infused for a day and the bushes are processed.
Instead of ash, you can also use shag. The proportions here will be slightly different: 200 g of each element per bucket of water. For the best effect, you need to add hot red pepper (about 40 g). It needs to be cut as small as possible. After a day of infusion, mix with a couple of tablespoons of liquid soap and a glass of ash.
It is recommended to spray the bushes in the late afternoon, and wait for the result the next morning.
Hot pepper is also used independently. The crushed pods are poured with water in a ratio of 1 to 10, then boiled for 30 minutes. After two days, the resulting infusion is filtered and diluted with water at a concentration of 100 ml per 1 liter before direct processing.
Onion skins or fresh onions are also widely used. To do this, take about 200 g of husk.Since it is very light in itself, this is quite a large amount. Therefore, you should never neglect and throw out the remaining husk. Or you can chop the onion head. It is also infused in a bucket of water for about 4-5 days. Green onions also find use in the fight against aphids.
When using dandelion, take 200 g of this herb (you can directly with the roots) and pour boiling water over it. After preliminary infusion, currant bushes are also processed.
Burdock should be used together with the root. We grind a kilogram of the plant well and pour it with three liters of water, then insist for a day. After this time, the solution must be filtered, after which it will be ready for use. Be sure to process the middle of the bush and the wrong side of the leaves. A sprayer is used for best results.
A solution is prepared from soda ash with the following proportions: a tablespoon of soda per liter of water. You can also add a small amount of soap to the solution for a better effect.
Celandine occupies a special place in pest control. His grass is poured with water using the following dosage: 2 kg of fresh plant per 10 liters of water. Insist for a day, then filter and spray under a currant bush with a spray bottle. It should be noted that celandine is quite poisonous, so it is recommended to wear gloves before processing.
No need to rush to throw out the tops of tomatoes after harvesting. To combat aphids, it is crushed and placed in a large container, then poured with water. After two days, the infusion can be applied. The bushes are watered in such a way as to cover the largest possible surface of the earth at the stems and roots of the currant.
Aphids also love quinoa, so this plant will help divert attention from currant bushes by switching it to itself. After the appearance of aphids, weeds are plucked and burned.
Potato tops are carefully crushed and poured with boiling water in a ratio of 1: 1, then it must be allowed to brew. After two days, you need to strain the mixture and process the bushes with it. Similarly, you can prepare an infusion of marigolds.
Orange and lemon peels, wormwood, tansy and yarrow will also help in the fight for currants. The recipe is similar to making an infusion of hot pepper, but you don’t need to dilute the resulting mixture at the end.
Ammonia (or simply ammonia) is one of the most effective means in the fight against aphids. When preparing the solution, adhere to the following dosage: 40 ml of the substance per 10 liters of water, it is also desirable to add from 10 to 40 g of soap, which will provide an adhesive effect. You can use both liquid and tar or laundry soap. In the case when a liquid is taken, the dosage changes - 125 ml. A spray gun is suitable for processing.
Mustard is used in various states such as powder, infusion, solution or suspension. It is enough just to pour dry powder on the places of accumulation of pests, after which the insects will leave the area.
To prepare the infusion, dilute 100 g of mustard powder in 10 liters of water and let it brew for a day, then add another 10 liters of liquid and a little laundry soap, previously crushed. The bushes are treated with this infusion after infection, usually a couple of weeks after the start of flowering.
The solution is prepared as follows: vinegar and mustard powder (1 tablespoon each) are diluted in 10 liters of warm water, mixed well and irrigated currant bushes.You can use a solution containing 100 g of salt and the same amount of mustard powder per 10 liters of water. But in both cases, you need to choose a period without rain, otherwise there will be no proper result.
The suspension can be sprayed on the bushes immediately after its preparation. Aphids do not tolerate the taste and smell of mustard. To prepare it, take 6 tablespoons of dry or liquid mustard per 10 liters of water.
It is no less effective to plant mustard in your garden, it will serve as a good bait for beneficial insects that are the enemy of aphids. It will also prevent the leaching of the necessary minerals and rid the soil of fungi, will contribute to its enrichment with nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. Weeds also avoid settling next to mustard, which is an advantage.
In all cases, it is necessary to process currant bushes in the late afternoon or in cloudy weather. After rains, you need to repeat the procedure.
Mechanical methods
At the initial stage of the defeat of aphids, and even more so after flowering and the ovary of berries on the bushes, it is not recommended to use chemical preparations. Therefore, gardeners use mechanical methods to get rid of pests.
In this case, carefully trim and burn the affected parts of the plant. Aphids are washed off with a hose with high pressure water and crushed by pests, not forgetting to wear protective rubber gloves.
When the spring period comes, the infected buds are also plucked before they bloom. Such kidneys can be distinguished by size and shape. If insects have had time to lay their eggs in them for the winter, the kidneys will be larger and more rounded.
But mechanical methods are quite painstaking and time-consuming. They must be carried out repeatedly, it is desirable to check the currants for the presence of insects every day.After the emergence of new individuals from the eggs, the procedure begins anew.
To protect against aphids, gardeners also use the method of attracting its enemies, such as ladybugs, hoverflies, earwigs and lacewings, small birds.
Ladybugs are very good at helping to fight aphids, which is why you need to attract them to your garden. This is done by planting tansy, calendula, mallow or nasturtium near the affected crops. The scent of these flowers will encourage the settlement of ladybugs and other aphid enemies.
Installed drinkers and feeders will help to attract the attention of birds to the garden.
Often, to combat aphids, gardeners use the method of fumigating plant bushes. In practice, fumigation with a mushroom with a raincoat, rubber or tobacco is used. Processing of currants by this method should be carried out before the buds open, when they are just beginning to swell.
When fumigating with rubber, a piece of burning rubber is lowered into an unnecessary pan or similar container, and then it is placed to smolder in turn under each bush of the cultivated crop.
When fumigating with a mushroom or tobacco, the same device is used - the smoker of beekeepers.
The duration of fumigation of currant bushes is about three hours, otherwise there will be no proper effect. It is recommended to carry out the procedure in the late afternoon, as well as in the absence of strong winds. In this case, you can do without the use of chemical compounds, since aphids will die without them. The only drawback is the acrid smoke, which requires the use of personal protective equipment such as masks (bandages or respirators) and gloves.
Chemicals
In the case when the aphid has already struck a large number of currant bushes, it would be more rational to purchase and use chemicals.
The following insecticides are suitable:
- "Aktara";
- "Vofatoks";
- "Inta-Vir";
- "Kinmiks";
- "Confidorm";
- "Karbofos";
- "Rovikurt";
- "Fufanon";
- Fury.
It should be remembered that these drugs have a high degree of toxicity, which is why when working with them it is necessary to use protective bandages and rubber gloves.
For best results, at least three chemical treatments should be carried out:
- before bud break;
- after new leaves appear;
- in the summer, about a month before the first berries appear.
Also, one should not neglect the instructions of the manufacturers of such substances and take into account the period of their validity, only in this case their use will be the safest and most effective. It is impossible to use chemicals at the initial stage of flowering. In this situation, it is better to use drugs such as Fitoverm, which are of biological origin.
Chemical-based preparations are an effective tool in the annual fight against aphids. But substances should be changed, since pests have the ability to develop immunity to poisons.
Prevention
In order to avoid the appearance of aphids, you must initially devote time to the proper care of currant bushes, because it is weak plants that are most susceptible to pests. And aphid is unlikely to get close to strong, viable plants, since its small proboscis will not be able to pierce their dense leaves.
The following measures will ensure effective prevention:
- timely watering and treatment of the plant with solutions containing nitrogen;
- pruning old, diseased and injured parts of the currant (annually);
- surface coating of the soil with mulch (peat, straw, cardboard, sawdust) to protect and improve its properties;
- weed removal;
- cleaning the trunk of the culture from exfoliated bark, since aphids usually lay eggs there for the winter;
- ant fight.
In the latter case, boiling water is used, pouring a bucket of water directly onto the anthill. This procedure must be carried out at the beginning of the spring period. To limit the movement of ant colonies around the currant bush, they dig a small trench and fill it with some kind of sticky compound.
Closer to autumn, the soil near the bushes is loosened a little, and in the spring the trunks are whitewashed.
You can also treat plants with chemical compounds, but before the awakening of the first buds. Part of the solution must be poured onto the soil under the currant for better protection.
Tips
There are several nuances What a gardener needs to know when dealing with pests:
- Insects that are enemies of aphids can not be attracted to the site, but settled near the currant bushes on their own. It is quite easy to buy them in specialized stores or in agricultural markets.
- Near the bushes of the plant, you can plant crops that have a strong smell, such as onions, parsley, mint, garlic or coriander. Pests don't like these harsh scents and will avoid where they are planted.
- Young shoots of currant bushes have very good flexibility, which allows gardeners to dip them into ready-made solutions and rinse thoroughly without worrying about breakage or injury.
- Each of the branches of the bush should be treated with the selected solutions in turn, so as not to accidentally miss a single harmful insect.
- It is also necessary to cultivate the soil near the currant bushes. Processing should be done in the absence of wind.
- You need to spray carefully so as not to accidentally harm beneficial insects, which will later help in the fight against aphids and other pests.
- First of all, you need to process the inner parts of the sheets, so the spray gun is directed as deep as possible into the bush.
The process of fighting aphids can take a long time. You should not expect instant results, you need to be patient and process, observing all the rules and nuances.
For the best result, an integrated approach is practiced, including preventive measures, the bait of beneficial insects and other enemies of aphids, planting plants with a pungent odor and mechanical processing, the use of folk and chemical preparations after the first signs of currant disease appear.
